Mangalore: Now, gold found in oats tin at Airport, Bhatkal man arrested

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Feb 20: Day after day, clever air passengers with ulterior motives seem to be finding new and innovative ways to smuggle in gold and other precious items. After chocolates, it is now the turn of oats to serve as means of smuggling gold stealthily.

Unfortunately for the passenger, as in the previous case, he could not succeed in his mission.

The passenger, identified as Abdul Ghani of Bhatkal, was arrested by the DRI officials at Mangalore International Airport on Wednesday February 20.

He was caught trying to smuggle in 300 grams of gold, concealed in a tin of Quaker Oats.

He arrived by the early morning Air India Express flight from Dubai on Wednesday.

Further investigations are on.

This is the second such incident reported in a span of less than a week. On February 16, a passenger, also from Bhatkal, was caught with 6 kg of gold concealed in boxes of chocolates.

height of stupidity by Indian Govt! Govt should value the hard work of Indian citizen in foreign country. They should question the people who smuggle and not the people who bring gold out of their hard earned money.

I really feel Sorry for Mr. Abdul Ghani. God knows with what difficulty he had earned that money to buy that gold. Looking at his age it looks to me that he might have a child who is of marriagble age, I will definitely tell you he is not a Smuggler. He might have thought Gold will not be allowed in the Customs.I abhor this act not of Mr. Ghani but the Customs people, and it is really a shame on Indian customs and its officer's for displaying this with photo of this poor Man and specially the Indian Govt for this age old Customs Law. I do not justify what he did was right considering the catch the nature of it, one can easily understand the need of it.
It is really a pity to see mature people giving sarcastic remarks and making a mockery of the person. I really pray that these people will not be in a similar situation where they will be embaressed of them selves. I call upon all the working class of the gulf people please do not take more Gold, Saffron and other illegal items where you will be made to look like a Bozo in front of the Customs officer's. Let us only take what we are permitted to take.

If the Indian govt is not helping us we will also not do much for the Govt. They should realise that its our NRI money is used to buy fuel and other necessary foreign items, or else what is India producing and exporting, Rice,Onions and some fruit's which are mostly consumed by NRI's, if they boycot them then nothing will be sold. So NRI we are also important like rest of the Indians, let us keep our respect.

I agree. 300 grams is not a big thing. Value will be nothing if compared to current cost of living. In my opinion permissible allowance should be limited to weight and not value. Amendment in the Act is required.

Good work Officers. Gulfies beware do not bring gold more than the permissible allowance. If caught concealing the same and without declaring you may either loose it or land in jail. If at all you want to bring in be prepared to pay the customs duties.

Dont be naive, one look at him and one can see that he is a carrier. Gold jewelry/currency/watches and other goods are a big racket in this line. Two years of working in Dubai cannot let you save so much.I too am an ex Gulfie and i have seen several of these characters and more innovative ways that even u wouldnt have imagined. So dont blame customs officers who have caught a thief.

Poor Guy didn’t apply his mind properly iam sure looking @ his face after all his two year income invested on gold to give his loved one.
There should be some alternative option if the gold less then 500 gm those who not pay the custom duty pay the double penalty.
Directly behind the bar and wrong opinion absolutely very bad custom officer should spend at least one year to see the difficulties to get or earn money over here in Dubai. Most of them think dhms will grow in tree, but to get the dhms each individual sacrifice a lot. Also custom officer can request the bank statement of Mr. Abdul gani about the source to purchase the 300 gm Gold, If it is hard earned money Kindly make some consideration.

I feel very sad for this guy. Many of us commented here saying the guy "acted clever".. But we not thinking how much lose he is bearing? Poor guy must have earned this with lots hardwork n difficulty. When our government is following the so cald Obirayana Kanoon people are tend to do these kind of things just to save a few bucks. Being a female i can get only a ring(worth Rs.20000 around 7grms gold)while travelling to india. Its totally unfair for the people who are working in gulf countries. Better the authorities take wise and favourable decision towards gulf travellers.

Yes for 10 grams of gold, you need to pay custom duty.
Indian passenger who has been residing abroad for over a year can carry gold up to value of INR 10,000 and a lady passenger upto INR 20,000/- Gold excess of permissible allowance attracts duty of 36.05%

Though he has done a mistake for not declaring at the customs, the amount allocated for free duty gold by the government is meagre, not sufficient to purchase few grams. Although we are are ventured in to 21st century but our rules/regulations are of 18th century. The best way is to allow NRI to bring 500gram of gold with incremental custom duty and this way, both are benefited. If every household accumulate gold in kgs, India will soon become GOLDEN INDIA.

Why he needs to be arrested for 300 gms, he should pay the penalty and should let him go. I am not saying what he has done is correct, but he should be penalized for not declaring. In the past celebrities like Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra, Malika Sherawat, etc. were detained just for few hours for bringing diamond and jewelry worth crores of rupees. Why authorities follow double standard?
