Beltangady: Bee attack - Nearly 80 devotees injured at Gadaikallu hill

Beltangady, Mar 24: Nearly a hundred devotees who had been to Gadaikallu hill on Sunday March 24 to offer prayers in observance of the Lenten season were stung by bees. Among them about 80 were injured, more than 8 of them seriously.

Sources said after the incident, the injured spent a harrowing time on the hill awaiting help for more than four hours.

As every year, more than 500 parishioners of Holy Redeemer Church visited the Gadaikallu hill on the occasion of Palm Sunday, led by parish priest Fr James D'Souza and assistant parish priest Fr Melwyn Noronha. By 2.30 pm they reached the spot in several vehicles and began climbing the hill. After finishing the prayers they began to disperse. The priests cautioned them to be careful and not disturb honey combs as last time too some devotees had been stung and injured. They warned that the bees might have already been stirred by their arrival.

However, despite the warning, a few from Ujire side began to climb higher after the prayers were over. All at once, a swarm of bees descended on the groups of devotees and attacked them. As the road was narrow and treacherous, there was not enough place to escape or take shelter. There were women, elderly and children in the groups. As the bees swarmed around at the spot, those who were below could not go to their rescue either.

Assistant parish priest Fr Melwyn Noronha was injured after he had suffered a fall while trying to escape from the bees. Among the others injured were Praveen and Jeevan. Some of them managed to take refuge in the nearby Tipu fort.

Finally, help arrived and first aid was given to the injured at the bottom of the hill. While some escaped with minor stings, others sustained injuries. Around eight of them were taken in an ambulance and admitted to hospital. The others were brought back by private vehicles.

As soon as news spread, hundreds of locals gathered at the spot and helped in the rescue operation.

And Jesus said to Samaritan woman. " Woman, a time will come when man will not worship in temples and mountains, but in spirit and truth , for God is Spirit" ( Edited text from Bible )
Even Bees seem to know scriptures !But humans are still groping in the dark.

I fully agree with Vincent-Mangalore views! When they know bees are nesting there since a long time why take a risk of going there for prayers just because tradition says that too after experiencing the attack episode last year!

Let the bees nest there naturally, bees are very essential for human survival!! They say humans will cease to exist in five years after the if bees get extinct!!

And whoever said bees are selfish, never, they are always busy working till they fall dead, and attack only when provoked!!

It is high time we change our mindset instead of blindly following age old traditions and respect nature and its creations!

Its the second instance of the bee attack. The parishioners need to understand that such a annual exercise is proving to be dangerous. They need to understand the danger and grave threat by the bees. This is stupidity.

This is an example of conflict between nature God and selfish human beings, who has encroached plenty of forestland for his own benefits. Let us pledge to safeguard wild living things from honeybees to tigers. Let live and let us live ….all happily.

The priest and parishioners should not choose such spot in future. The bees are very selfish and aggressive in nature. The honey is sweet but the bee sting is very dangerous and cause death.

Let the bees live where they are. Give nature its space. We have plenty of places of worship and don't need to make more spaces at the expense of nature. God hears prayers irrespective of if they are made at the top of a hill or at the bottom of a valley. Live and let live.

Authorites need tosmoke out the bees in future wheneever they anticipate such events or other tourist rush as things could have gone more worst if it were the other killer bees where you cannot escape in thhat steep mountian and jungle around. I think the devotees should have informed the authorites as they already knew about the presence of beehives on the way due to last years events. situation could have been prevented.
