Bangalore: Fire accident at seat manufacturing unit - Six killed

Bangalore, Mar 25 (IANS): Six people were burnt to death early Monday in a massive fire that gutted a seat-making and furniture factory in the Magadi industrial area on the city's outskirts, police said.

"The victims were said to be asleep when the fire occurred in the factory, which had inflammable material such as foam, thermocol, wooden panels and ready-made chairs," Ramangara's Superintendent of Police Anupam Agarwal told IANS here.

Though police registered a complaint of criminal negligence against the officials of the factory - SK Seating Systems Ltd - which makes foam seats for auditoriums and cinema theatres, no arrest has been made so far.

"We are waiting for the factory owner to report to the Magadi police station to find out how many people were present in the factory at the time of accident, as one more person is reportedly missing. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained," Agarwal said.

According to state Fire Brigade's Inspector General of Police (western range) Shiva Kumar, 10 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames and they brought the situation under control within a couple of hours.

"Our fire brigade station in the western suburbs got a call around 6 a.m. that a fire broke out in a seat-making factory off the Magadi road. By the time our men entered the premises, the entire material, including foam mattresses and chairs, was in flames. When the fire was extinguished, six bodies were found in the heap of burnt material," Kumar said.

Preliminary investigation and interrogation of the factory's employees revealed that the victims were in the factory since Sunday to complete a huge order for seats to a Dubai firm and stayed back in the premises as they worked through the night.

"Of the seven workers, one went out to bring tea and downed the shutters and latched them from outside as the factory had a valuable consignment ready for packing and shipping," Kumar said citing one of the employees.

He said the victims could have died due to asphyxiation and from thick smoke of carbon dioxide and chemicals.

The victims, who were employed as contract labour, hailed from Bijnor district in Uttar Pradesh.

It is common practice in bangalore to lock the factory from outside to avoid entry of unknown people in to the factory and not to allow their own workers to sell finished goods or raw materials.concerned Department should take stern action against such owners.

Locking escape doors is criminal. Owners do this as for them money is important as compared to safety. Fit case for hanging the owner of this unit.

All such factories should have at least FIRE ALARM SYSTEM, like smoke detectors installed, which in turn will activate the PUBLIC ADDRESS system. If this is implemented by our CIVIL DEFENCE DEPARTMENT, then many lives can be saved. We do not even learn from our own mistakes. Why the authority does not insist on this. When it comes to safety there should not be any compromise. Going with the past history, many lives could have been saved if such measures are taken in advance.

Most of the time fire & safety is just in the paper without any practical benefits.Safety clearance is cleared without any delay depends how much amount you pay under the table.Sometimes we think the human lives are soo.. cheap and we forget the incidents too.. very easily.

    B.A.NAINAR,

Three years back, a building called CARLTON TOWERS, which was housing IT and Consulting Firms caught fire and 10 plus people died. This building was nearby to my office.

After this incident many IT companies including our company had arranged SAFETY awareness programs like what to do, how to escape when our premises catch fire. I attended this session and came to know about some interesting facts.

The atmosphere air contains 21% oxygen. When this percentage decreases by 4-5 points, thinking capacity of our brain decreases by around 20-25% according to the doctor. Assume that we are surrounded by full of smoke, our brain thinking power will be least! Even if we know the route to escape, we may not get through at that point of time.

Dinesh Poojary, for a change you are 100% right.
Because of the huge GARBAGE dumps in Bangalore oxygen percentage in the atmosphere has come down drastically.

All these questions will araise only when there is such a massive fire accident. Or else these industries will never think of these safety measures. I appreciate IT corporates which are really taking these safety measures on top priority. Or else how can there could be only 1 exit which is also closed from outside. Management should be held responsible and made to bear the consequences including huge penaulty for the negligence.

    Jossey,

According to you BJP Govt went to the premises of this factory and lit fire. You assume this and feel happy...

All matured people here will understand what is the cause of fire in Bangalore, Mantralaya Mumbai, Kolkatta Hotel etc etc..

Even if a Bangalore person suffers from stomach ache for over eating, you blame BJP :-)
