Udupi / Mangalore, Mar 27: It's that time of the year when the entire country gets drenched in a myriad colours of joy. Holi brings with it the sweet fragrance of the spring and bathes the young and old alike in its spirit.

Holi celebration takes place with a lot of joy and energy throughout the country. The enthusiasm of the people reaches its peak as they drench each other in colours, throwing around water balloons, coloured water, sprinklers and what not.

Though Holi celebration is often on a low note in South India, the twin coastal districts with many educational institutes and students from various parts of India enjoyed the festival in full swing.

When it comes to Holi, people across boundaries come together and celebrate the festival as one. The more the colour on your dress the more you have enjoyed the festival.

“Bura na mano holi hai” - the phrase resounds as young and old alike get mischievous with the colours and spare no one. Children particularly enjoy the festival with colored balloons and water missiles and 'pichkaris'.

Traditionally, in the midst of these coloring games, Holi specialties like gujiya, malpuas, mathri, puran poli, dahi Vadas etc are savored and downed with glasses full of 'thandai'.

My response is directly to some comments that have been made.. when you check the names they are either Muslim or Christian and they have the common thread of comparison to valentines day celebrations. One man has gone far enough to say girls and boys should not mix as shown in the pictures .
Now that the agenda has been set for my response... I have one key question ..
What is the difference between BD,HJV,and all self proclaimed hindutva organizations that are propogating Indian culture and comments comparing Holi and Valentines day ??..
I think everyone has got it WRONG here.
We are a democracy governed by article 19-Freedom of speech and expression . How repressive is our thinking by dictating that our personal views should be general views and that everyone needs to adopt the same ... Like article 19 stands for - each one has their right of speech,so does your repressive views.
Let the Youth and the old enjoy Valentines day, Holi or any other interaction between Man and Woman, whether created by GOD or SCIENCE the nature of the establishment was for procreation .... governed by some judicial norms to avoid monopolization/exploitation by virtue of ones strength be it in numbers/ money/power etc etc.
Sex is a phisiological need as represented by the bottom most part of a isoceles triangle, along with water, air and food .. when one has that they move to secure the same, along with shelter it becomes the second slab in the triangle...
Followed by feelings of intimacy, self esteem,gd feelings etc which is the third slab .... the fourth being positing like wanting to be VP/MD/CEO or CM... and the final slab is self actualization ... Like godliness, no prejudices to mankind etc...
If you read what i have written you will realize that Man and woman cannot and should not be separated under the garb of our own insecurities .
I read a lot of comments , i cant say they come from different facets of society but i must say they are very bigoted in thought .

The word Holi originated from "Holika", sister of Hiranyakashipu. The festival of Holi is celebrated because of a story in the old Hindu religion. In Vaishnavism, Hiranyakashipu is the great king of demons, and he had been granted a boon by Brahma, which made it almost impossible for him to be killed. The boon was due to his long penance, after which he had demanded that he not be killed "during day or night inside the home or outside, not on earth or in the sky neither by a man nor an animal neither by astra nor by shastra". Consequently, he grew arrogant and attacked the Heavens and the Earth. He demanded that people stop worshipping gods and start praising respectfully to him.According to this belief, Hiranyakashipu's own son, Prahlada, was a devotee of Vishnu. In spite of several threats from Hiranyakashipu, Prahlada continued offering prayers to Vishnu. He was poisoned by Hiranyakashipu, but the poison turned to nectar in his mouth. He was ordered to be trampled by elephants yet remained unharmed. He was put in a room with hungry, poisonous snakes and survived. All of Hiranyakashipu's attempts to kill his son failed. Finally, he ordered young Prahlada to sit on a pyre in the lap of Holika, Hiranyakashipu's demoness sister, who also could not die because she had a boon preventing her from being burned by fire. Prahlada readily accepted his father's orders, and prayed to Lord Vishnu to keep him safe. When the fire started, everyone watched in amazement as Holika burnt to death, while Prahlada survived unharmed. The salvation of Prahlada and burning of Holika is celebrated as Holi.

    Happpy holi.
This holi represents the present generation's Valentine's day celebration in a different form.Within limit all good. Now a days VD celebration is limited to loving friends/couples only. Where as the difference is being when once originated that it was for PURE LOVE AND ONLY TRUE LOVE, that do not harm, hurt, judge, neglect, jealous, greed, lust, spoil, divide...etc and THAT LOVE can be between any relations of God. Time to open minds and understood each other...
    Have a happy day...

How many people know that Holi Festival is Indian Version of Valentine's Day ?
Pl. see Shiva Purana & Kumara Sambhava. Manmatha alias Kaama the God of Love tries to awaken God Shiva from his Penance so that he can marry Parvati and bear a son to kill Demon Tarakasura. God Shiva gets angry at Kaamadeva for disturbing his penance, and burns down kaama by his third eye. After the death of Kaama the God of Love, the procreation or Re-production system in the whole universe comes to a stand still due to absence of 'feelings' ,among living beings.

Then Kamaa's wife Rathi & all Gods pray to Shiva to resurrect Kaama so that the world can have smooth procreation activity, or else entire life in the universe will come to an end. Shiva then resurrects Kaama deva and gives him a boon to reside in the body of all the living beings so that every one can have the feelings of Love, and this happy occasion of resurrection of God of love is celebrated with colours. Now do you agree this is akin to Valentines Day !

    Hi daiji reader
we should not allow to mix both sex in celebrations. there are lot of chances of creating problem. while seeing the photo itself we can smell the extension of the celebration. we need to exhibit Indian culture.
