Mangalore, Mar 27: "If there is no audience for drama, it is we artistes and directors who are to be blamed. Instead of blaming people, we should try to correct our mistakes and attract more number of people to theatre," said senior theatre artiste Eddie Sequeira.

He was speaking at the World Theatre Day celebration at Kalaangann here on Wednesday March 27.

Lauding Mandd Sobhann and its Kalakul repertory for their contribution and efforts towards preserving Konkani theatre, he said, "Directors should prepare the script and artistes should perform according to what the situation demands and keeping in mind the taste of the audience. The problem with most of our dramas is that we lack discipline. If we can give quality drama deifinitely the audience response will be good," he said.

Rosario College principal Fr Alwyn Serrao gave a talk on 'Konkani drama audience' and said that the director must first know and understand his audience and their taste before writing or directing the drama.

"Drama conveys good message pertaining to society. There have been new changes in Konkani theatre over the years brought about especially by Kalakul who are performing various types of dramas, which is a good sign," he lauded.

On the occasion, Eddie Sequeira released 'Kalakul Natakam' a collection of three plays in Konkani authored by Arun Raj Rodrigues.

Students of Rosario and Pompei colleges who were trained by Kalakul repertory to perform the play 'Ragthachi Saks' recently were awarded certificates.

The members of Kalakul repertory staged a play titled 'Vasap' that added more charm to the evening.

President of Konkani Prachar Sanchalan Roy Castelino, Mandd Sobhann president Stany Alveres, gurkar Eric Ozario, Christopher DSouza Neenasam and Arun Raj Rodrigues were present.

Yesterday after returning from the above programme, I realized that I have hurt the feelings of many of my good friends, actors and director by saying few things in my speech, which in turn has given a wrong message. Today I received few calls saying the same. I sincerely apologize if my remarks have hurt or offended anyone.
As an observation to the talk given by Rev Fr.Alwyn Serrao, I wanted to say how some of us actors take rehearsals lightly and act out the scenes without putting any efforts to understand the charactor or the sequence of the act or follow the director, and as an example cited the rehearsal I was watching recently and how an actor was practicing the scene of a dying man standing without taking the scene or the practice seriously. Many of those who present thought or came to the wrong conclusion that I was refereeing to one particular person.
Here I want to clarify that I WAS NOT REFERRING to the main actor who had beautifully uted the role of St Sebastian (who was first shot with arrows, and later died of beating by sticks and rods lying down, not standing up). I had watched him doing his rehearsals in all sincerity and putting his full efforts. And the result of their hard work was seen and appreciated by everyone of the 5000 plus crowd, including me and my family, and thousands of other who had watched the same on TV. It is not at all easy to bring nearly hundred actors together from many parishes and direct the play with such rewarding result. I sincerely congratulate the parishioners, organizers, writer, actors and specially the Director Dolla for such a grand show.
Once again my sincere apologies to all who attended the above function and felt offended by my remarks. As I think this is my first blunder in almost 50 years of my association with Konkani Stage, I hope all will forgive me.
