Managing coalitions is not easy: Manmohan Singh

New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI): Days after DMK pulled out of the UPA, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today candidly admitted that managing coalitions is not easy and urged industry leaders to have faith in government's determination to revive the economy.

Acknowledging that there were deficiencies in governance, Singh said the advantage of being a democracy is that the shortcomings were always put before the public.

"And there are indeed many deficiencies. Corruption is a problem. Bureaucratic inertia is a problem. Managing coalitions is not easy. But these problems have not arisen suddenly," he said adding that the government was taking steps to revive the economy.

However, Singh said these problems had not arisen suddenly and had existed even when the economy was growing at 8 per cent per annum.

"I would urge Indian industry to have faith in our determination and avoid getting swamped by a mood of negativism," he said addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Confederation of Indian Industry.

"We can in my view get back to 8 per cent growth even as we try to make the longer-term changes in our system to deal with these problems. And what is more, we can achieve growth of an inclusive kind," Singh said.

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA), which will complete nine years in government next month, has run into rough weather with key partners Trinamool Congress and DMK pulling out within a span of six months.

Samajwadi Party, a key outside supporter of the ruling alliance, has also been breathing fire on several issues and criticising the government headed by Singh.

Sir, hope India understands to practical problems your government at the center is facing. At the moment fiscal deficit is a "Major Challenge" for your government. And even to control "Food Inflation" because it is pinching hard to the common man(Aam admi).

If you can arrest these two major issues, people's verdict will be there with "Your Party" for the coming general elections. The parties which didn't allow "Our Parliament" to function or conduct the business as per our constitution, what more you can expect from them?

Some of the parties which were supporting you within and also outside the government have shown their "True Colour" for their "Petty" and "Selfish" reasons!!!.

It is easy to accuse our prime minister but i would say that he is well educated. Before entering into politics he has served at various levels. One who has something in brain does not bark but does the job faithfully. All those politicians who speak if u analise they have nothing in their brains. I am proud of Manmohan singh and he will be always remembered for his diplomatic style of functioning by the entire world. And even those who criticise know very well quality of MNS.

Very well said - One of the best\able Prime Minister who really managed the coalition Govt. so well, without making big noise. Whatever hurdles came his way, he has crossed them eficiently.
Next election, hope Congress gets mandate to govern which will allow them develop country faster and bring goodwill to all citizens of India.
I also pray that any other party than the BJP sits in the opposition and helps the ruling party to develop country. Besides the coalition partners the opposition played a deterrent role with not allowing the parliament to function normally. They were the most uncivilised, trouble causing and self centered opposition ever.

You have managed Coalition Govt for almost 10 Years and your great sucess story is "You talk less and work more".If you had the double standard tongue of the BJP walas there would have been 10 Prime Ministers in 10 years. As Rashmi Salian clearly pointed out that in Karnataka there was a clear majority but still they could not manage their house and had 3 CM. Congress having a history of over 125 years understands the political game and knows how to play politics. Our PM besides being an able statesman is an able administrator. He need not run after parties for support, but all parties are waiting at his doorstep to extend support. This is the difference between Congress and BJP.I remember A B Vajpee being a PM for just 13 days and failed miserabley in handling coalition.Mr Vajapayee also succummed badly to the pressure tactics of Mrs Jayalitha and had sleepless nights.Sardarji is the only person capable to handle coalition inspite of all odds.Again Congress wants Dr Singh to be PM for the third term in 2014 just because he has the abilty to manage coalition.

It may be tough. But sad to say that Karnataka BJP failed miserably inspite of having majority in state assembly. In five years, we had three Chief Ministers. One was sacked on charges of corruption where as another was sacked to satisfy someone's ego. Now we have One CM and two deputy CM's. This arrangement just to satisfy power hungry politicians. And hence, it is also not easy even if you don't have coalitions..
