Karnataka's Reddys learn money, crowds don't always mean votes

By V S Karnic

Bangalore, Apr 3 (IANS):
Switching from cycle-riding to heli-hopping and lording over Bellary and the BJP in Karnataka, mining barons Reddy brothers and their associates are learning a bitter lesson: money and crowds do not always translate into votes.

The lack of vote-catching ability, when elections are only a month away, invariably means desperate attempts to strike a political alliance - only to be spurned. This stark reality has hit the Reddy brothers and their associate B. Sriramulu, a former Bharatiya Janata Party minister, as Karnataka heads to assembly polls May 5.

Sriramulu quit the BJP in November 2011 as he was not made a minister in the second BJP government in the state headed by D.V. Sadananda Gowda and floated BSR Congress.

While his patron-in-chief G. Janardhana Reddy spent time between Chanchalaguda jail in Hyderabad and the central prison in Parappana Agrahara in east Bangalore over illegal iron ore mining and export, Sriramulu organized rallies in many parts of the state and managed to gather some crowds.

He had the open backing of one of Janardhana Reddy's two brothers, G. Somashekara Reddy (BJP), who continues to be an assembly member.

Both boasted of proving to the BJP that it is not a force in the state without the backing of the Reddys and their associates.

The dream came crashing down March 11, days ahead of the announcement of the assembly election date, when the results of the polls to urban local bodies (ULBs) were out.

Sriramulu's party did not win even one seat out of the 246 in the iron-ore rich Bellary district, about 300 km north of Bangalore, which the Reddys and Sriramulu have lorded over since 2004.

The party's overall show was dismal with only 86 of the nearly 1,500 in the fray winning. Elections were held to elect over 4,900 representatives to run 207 urban local bodies.

Since then Somashekara Reddy has virtually disappeared from public view while Sriramlu has been hunting for allies.

The only major party with which he could have hoped for an alliance was the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) headed by former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda.

Sriramulu met Gowda's son and JD-S state president H. D. Kumaraswamy and spoke confidently of a tie-up coming through soon. His spokespersons went further and told the media that all had been tied up and only a formal announcement was due.

The optimism turned out to be totally misplaced.

While Gowda declared Monday that the JD-S would not enter into an alliance with any party, Kumaraswamy followed suit Tuesday, leaving Sriramulu to fend for himself.

The BJP is likely to give tickets to Somashekara Reddy and the third Reddy brother, G. Karunakara, who was minister along with Janardhana in the first BJP government headed by B.S. Yeddyurappa.

Unlike Somashekara, Karunakara has not backed Sriramlu and has been keeping a low profile since the arrest of Janardhana in September 2011.

Sriramulu's sister J. Shanta, who too had been openly backing the brother's party, is a BJP Lok Sabha member from Bellary.

With the BJP prospects of retaining power in the assembly appearing bleak, the party and the two Reddy brothers may stick together as neither has anything to gain by a break-up.

Sushma Swaraj lost against Soniaji in 1999 Parliament Election from Bellary But at that time she came in contact with Reddys & Ramulu who were just running a small finance company called GreenNoble in Bellary and they were threatening depositors not to withdraw deposit from their finance company. Initially they wanted to join Congress as Cong was in Power in Karnataka at that time. But they were not taken by Cong, so they went to BJP and made friends with Sushma during MP election in 1999. only later on with depositors money of finance company they entered Mining & Hafta business and made tones of money through dubious means. Sushma Swaraj continued to be their God-Mother till 2011 end. Only when Reddy were neck deep in Legal problems, she ditched them. In an interview given to local Telugu news paper of Ballary in 2010, Janardhan reddy Boasted that he is ready to spend up to Rs.5,000 crores ( Fifty thousand Million rupees) to make Sushma Swaraj Prime Minister Of India. Sushma Swaraj never took objection to this foolish public Statement of Gaali Reddy at that time. What does it suggests ?

The 13 Vara Mahalaxmi Poojas continuously attended by Sushma Swaraj since 1999 till 2011 in the Reddy House, could not save Reddys. The 45 crores Kireeta offered to Tirupati Timmappa also could not save Reddys.
When Yaddi wanted to get rid of these criminal Reddys in 2010 itself, it was Sushma Swaraj who blocked it and also threatened to remove Yaddi himself from CM post. At that time if BJP High Command had supported Yaddy to Control Reddys then the condition of BJP would not have been as bad as it is today. Here the main culprit is Sushma Swaraj as she is indirectly responsible for the fall of BJP in Karnataka.

Ramulu has got some vote base only among Valmiki alias Nayaka community as he belongs to same Valmiki-Nayaka community. Even though Ramulu is a Telugu Valmiki still he has got some following among Kannada Valmikis also. This Valimikis have sizable population in Bellary, Raichur, Koppala, Gadag, & Belguam district. But nowhere they are more than 10% of the population. So, his BSR Cong will be decimated in next election and Reddys will continue to face legal onslaught for the grave sins they have done. Please observe that - Reddys or Ramulu do not have even a bit of repentance for their grave misdeeds.

Everyone in the state knows how the reddy brother came up in life. Without a formal education, robbing our state of its natural resources, eating away at our money and using muscle power to meet thier demands. Our people are not so foolish to bring such people to power. We all have learnt our lessons. If these rouges are brought to power, there will nothing be but goonda raj. Yatha raja thatha praja.
I cant even imagine how they got a few candidates who share thier ideology and contested the ULB elections.

"Karnataka's Reddys learn money, crowds don't always mean votes"

this is what we have to show to all politicians. this change is symbol of changed mindset of Indian voters.
specially added votes of educated young generation will not bend for money power and they will vote to proper MLA & party.

Now politics and new party lunching is not a easy task sri Ramalu came to know this in 6 month only .

Now he is planning to make allanence with JDs and other, it shows his helplessness and political difficulties.

Here Gaali means first name of Reddy family. Due to BJP,s Sushma Swaraj blindly backing Reddys inspite of knowing their murky background the Karnataka's Politics had become worst than Bihar during the days of former CM Laalu Prasad. It is surprising how other two Reddys could manage to stay outside Jail. Especially Somashekara Reddy used to ensure through his musclemen that all the Government Contracts should go to Andhra Reddys & Rao only. During the hey days of Reddys the Karnataka origin contractors never used to get any govt contracts or Power Projects.

You can fool some of the people some of the time.
But not all of the people ALL the time.
Which ever party comes to power, has to bear in mind that it has to serve the cause of the common people. The fury of the common man will be soon seen in May 2013 .
