Mangalore, Apr 5: A coastal security policeman was killed in an accident while on duty at Bappanadu, Mulky here in the wee hours of Friday April 5.

The deceased has been identified as Rajappa (29), from Honnali in Davangere.

At midnight, Rajappa along with two other coastal security policemen had a shift in duty and were checking passing vehicles at Bappanadu checkpost. While the other two policemen checked vehicles going towards Udupi, Rajappa had checked a vehicle moving towards Mangalore from Udupi.

At around 3 am, a lorry is said to have rammed into Rajappa and sped away.

When the other two policemen turned around to look, Rajappa had already fallen on the ground, killed on the spot. The lorry had moved too fast for them to note down the number.

Rajappa was of 2008 batch and was posted here a year ago. His first posting was in Sullia. His wife, who is a housewife, is pregnant. They had married about 10 months ago.

He was the son of Mallappa, and was the among the youngest of two brothers and two sisters.

The body was shifted to Srinivas hospital.

Mulky police have registered a case.

Last Rites

On Friday at around 3.15 pm, Rajappa's body was taken to the police commissioner’s office where a guard of honor was given.

IGP Pratap Reddy of Western Ghats, police commissioner Manish Karbikar, SP Abhishek Goel, DSP’s SP’s among others paid their last respects to the slain policeman.

The body was later handed over to the family members.

What type of checkpost is this? No loaded drums on the road, no speed breaker, No stop lights.. How police can expect driver/culprits should stop the vehicle. Only Pipe barricade is not enough..Sad incidence

I really feel pity on the policeman RAJAPPA who had to man the check-post with no proper facilities provided, at least a vehicle and a proper place to stay, lost his life FOR THE POLICE FORCE AND THE SECURITY OF THE NATION.
CHECK POST IS SUPPOSED TO BE A VERY IMPORTANT place to check incoming and out going vehicles as our state is going thru a bad time of DRUG SMUGGLING from the neighboring states and possibly the international thieves and terrorists who feel free to cross the inter state borders.

Shame on naka-bandi arrangements without any back-up. The senior who ordered this naka-bandi should be made a chapati.

Dear BHARATHESH BANGERA M'lore I 100% agree with you as we had also experienced the same on the highway near Ullal bridge where the POLICE BARRICADE'S WERE PLACED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WITH OUT REFLECTORS.what can we expect a driver to do suddenly in such a situation????.A police vehicle is a must with powerful roof blinking rotating lights to be visible from far or one or two TWO WHEELERS is also O.K.parked on both directions to follow the vehicles in a HIT-RUN SITUATION. RIP RAJAPPA.

Police department should be well prepared at all check-posts to chase any vehicle not stopping or speeding away before checking.
It is governments duty to provide good vehicle to chase the culprits.

Very sad indeed. Looks like this is an accident and not an intentional act. Fearing the consequences, driver must have sped the way.

    RIP

With the latest technology, our police dept could be made one of the best in the country. But unfortunately no leader wants to do that.

    On one side,
'Average asset of Karnataka minister zooms by 665 percent to Rs 6.96 crore'

On the other side, our police who ensure our safely putting their life at risk have no value for their life and safety...

    What a tragidy.. RIP.

I can imagine the situation since we had similar instance couple of days back, some where near Padubidri. We were coming back from Udupi to Surathkal. It was Qualis with around 6 people and we were at descent speed of around 100 km since it was NH and no much vehicles on the road. Everything was good. But all of sudden I could see a police guy mid of the road, pulling barrier to the middle of the road. It was all of sudden and fortunately I could stop the vehicle. For a while I was so panic didn't know what to do seeing a gentleman standing in the middle of the road. He didn't have proper jacket nor there were any signals indicating there is checking going on. When I asked him how can you stand like this mid of the road, his answer was "I had put torch light didn't you see". What nonsense. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. There were 2 threats. First one, is like as it happened today in above accident. I would have knocked him down or if there was another car behind me in the same speed, he would have banged me from behind when I had stopped all of sudden like that. So, checking is ok, accepted. But follow proper rules and regulations. Wear proper reflecting jackets, put proper signals or indicators indicating that chekcing is going on. Also have a vehicle with you to chase the vehicel in case of such disaters. If you had a vehicle at the spot, you could have easily chased the lorry.
but pity on ourselves... we recommend so many improvements but nothing works out. RTO and Police , both organizations closed both their ears and eyes.

Very Sad news. That place near Mulky is not an appropriate place for police check post. No parking space, No enough of light, No flashing lights at night, No speed breakers, No surveillance camera, So, our security personals have to work in difficult conditions. One thing is for sure- Corruption is booming.

Very sad...as Mr. Bsatheesh pointed out, this check post office raises lots of questions about security of police and ordinary people. It also raises question on our security system. Looks like India is shining just like "shoe", shines only at the top...90% in dust...and holes in shoe sole...

If these truckers can drive over a cop on police duty and get away what is the plight of a common man, cyclist and biker on our roads?
Why should we not dump this defunct Karnataka RTO into the Arabian sea?
