Mangalore, Apr 27:
Currently, people have become more health conscious given the number of diseases on the rise. Programmes like ‘Satyameva Jayate’ and other awareness programmes have shown people the ill-effects of pesticides. Organic farming thus comes into the picture as a good alternative.

Organic food has become very popular in various places and has appeared in our city too. Daijiworld recently spoke to the owners of the first ever complete organic and natural products outlet in the city, Satvam Organics, located in Deepa Enclave.

Satvam Organics is owned by three partners—Dr Anasuya, Ayurvedic physician by profession, Sudarshan, a farmer from the city, and Kumarprasad, an engineer. When asked on how they came up with this unique outlet, Dr Anasuya said her brother Kumarprasad and she were brought up in a family which used pesticide-free, unpolished food products, and this practice was a habit with them since childhood.

She said they also wanted other people to make a commitment to organic products for a great, healthy life and hence they decided to start an outlet in the city. During this, they came across farmer Sudarshan who also agreed to be their partner.

Dr Anasuya said it took five years of planning to start an outlet in the city and after planning all resources, the outlet was opened on November 2012.

Comprising of more than 200 organic and natural products, the shop consists of 95 percent of organic and the rest are natural products. Vegetables, dehydrated banana, jackfruit, pure ghee, saffron, spices without adulteration, olive oil, pickles, groundnut oil, ‘kumkum’, ‘kokkum’ jam, unpolished boiled rice, different types of jaggery, natural salt (not refined), beaten rice, soaps without synthetic addictives, and lip balms of different varieties are among the few products available.

These products have been purchased from six farmers’ co-operatives and more than eight farmers from various places like Gadag, Belgaum, Theerthahalli, Mysore, Sirsi, Puttur, Suratkal, Vittal, Vagga, Neermarga, and BC Road. Some farmers even exchange their organic products on a barter system.

An interesting thing noticed at the outlet were sweets kept for sale. These were prepared by some housewives in the city during their spare time. Another add on is that the owners of the outlet will soon sell homemade hygienic ‘Kulfi’ which they will purchase from Vasanth, a resident of Melkar, about 30 kms from the city.

When asked about fast selling products in the city, Dr Anasuya said that all the products have a huge demand especially vegetables and unpolished boiled rice where 300 to 400 kgs a month is being sold.

Commenting on the problems, she said that as products are being sourced from faraway places, some of the products, especially vegetables, get spoilt during transportation. Another problem is that a few organic products are usually seasonal and hence it is not available all the time. In addition to this, only a few farmers opt for organic farming.

“The prices of the organic products are on par with the other products available in the supermarket. However, when we compare it to a wholesale shop, the products are slightly expensive,” she adds.

Nature has blessed us with all the best ways it can but we are doing sins by going against it..we are not following the dharma of this body.we are not giving the body what it likes we are giving what we like. Indian saints lived upto 600 years, gradually it reduced to 100 and current india's life expectancy is 65 years it may go down if we follow the same lifestyle. All this is because going against the nature. when u will be with the nature just eating what nature gives not processing it u will feel u are regenerated u feel u are pure. we are what we eat. i suggest everyone of u to make best use of these kind of outlets and live with the nature. if we ignore our mother and our existence, one day will come when we wont exist. we may think going organic is costly, but once u lose ur health wasn't it not become costly. once demand increases, prices will be come down. there is no use to body if u eat refined rice polished and colored dal pesticide vegetables and much processed food. you will be shocked to know how ur oil is refined. in this new year take resolution that u will go organic.

I am so glad to have finally found an organic food store in Mangalore. I am a big champion of organic foods, having known the damage caused by pesticide ingested products. Satvam has indeed come as a big blessing to the city.

I was passing through Mangalore as part of my visit to South India and what a surprise this place was! It would not be an understatement to say that I did not find such a store in all of south India! (well, I must admit that I haven't experienced Bangalore's culinary variety as yet and that is for my next visit)

The varieties of honey that they carry is even better than that of any Whole Foods in Chicago! I spoke with Kumar, a very energetic entrepreneur and Dr. Anasuya, a very talented physician and learn that the store is their attempt at bringing healthy food to the masses. It was very hard for me to comprehend the fact that it is extremely difficult to find integral rice (unpolished) in stores in India, even though rice is the staple of people. But Satvam has it!

The owners apparently procure the products from various sources (since eating wholesome items is not mainstream there). Go there for organic produce, sweeteners and grains.

Not to be missed, however, is the array of handcrafted soaps and lip balms, each one better smelling than the other. I was wonderstruck to find my favorite Basil and mint on their shelves! Don't miss a chance to try them all and your skins will thank you.

In short, this is a heaven for those wanting to see the change to a healthy lifestyle. If you don't see a product, just ask. You will have nothing to lose but all to gain by visiting Satvam.

This place has lot of organic food, rice, vegetables, fruits etc . . . people in the shop are very nice and very knowledgeable on organic food. When the entire food system become partially poison, we eat chemicals more than vitamins . . this kind of effort is really appreciable and need encouragement. If one want to have a healthy diet then shift to organic food. Otherwise cancer is going to kill us rapidly.

I have been visiting the shop and really amazed with the quality of the veggies and groceries. After using organic only for 4-5 months now, I realize how much I am relieved from these poisonous chemicals that are present in conventionally grown veggies. At first I thought that they are too expensive but its myth most of the times since sometimes, they are cheaper than market price! More than money, we get 4 times the nutrition and free from toxins! This is a beginning in Mangalore. We all must support them, and we can hope many outlets and also online shopping and door delivery one day for distant buyers.

We have to support organic farming so that more and more households with small land holdings can take up organic farming and grow different varieties, engage in dairy farming, etc., for healthy living. Such moves will slowly change the mindset of people and change the society for better.

I am a regular at Satvam. They are well stocked with varieties of rice, groceries and products which are no longer available in the market easily. Spices, freshly made cow ghee, pure honey, unrefined raw (brown ) sugar are definitely some products worth the mention for their quality and freshness.

At last people turn to organic food..It's mentioned in Hinduism long back.. Organic food is one prepared out of grains, pulses, vegetables , fruits all grown without the use of synthetic fetilisers and pesticides and using only organic(natural) fertilisers like cow dung, and natural pesticides like neem leaves etc., It was shocking to know the kidneys are not able filter out toxins of synethetic fertilisers from the blood after the food is assimilated providing essential nutrients -vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates , proteins and fibers. So it is essential we eat food free of toxins and organic food is the best choice.

Food contains all nutrients, when cooked essential nutrients like enzymes, vitamins all evaporate and lost. Raw vegetables and fruits are the best source of green- uncooked food replenishing our bodies with much needed nutrients - they are also rich fibers -cholestrol reducers and constipation fighters.

Go for organic food. And eat organically grown greens carrots, cuccumbers, tomatoes, lemons, beets, beans. Eat bananas, apples, pears, oranges. The greatest difficulty in getting this done is procuring them. These days organic food outlets have come in. Find them out and take home regularly. Everything mentioned in 'Hinduism'..good things adopted by Western Countries
