Karnataka remains graveyard for regional parties

Bangalore, May 9 (IANS):
Karnataka Wednesday avoided the dubious distinction of delivering a fractured mandate for the third time in a row by giving clear victory for Congress and remained true to its reputation as a graveyard of regional outfits.

Two regional parties were founded in just over a year by two former Bharatiya Janata Party leaders with the aim of ousting the "corrupt" national parties, the Congress and the BJP, from the state.

The Congress was set to win 121 seats and was ahead in two while the BJP and the Janata Dal-Secular were tied at second place with 40 wins each.

As the millions of votes polled Sunday to elect the state's 14th assembly were counted Wednesday, the parties formed by former BJP chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and former BJP minister B. Sriramulu were set to win less than 10 seats together.

While Yeddyurappa at least had the satisfaction of realising his dream of defeating the BJP, Sriramulu had the mortification of seeing the only glamour quotient in his party, Kannada actress Pooja Gandhi, defeated in Raichur in north Karnataka, supposedly his stronghold.

Yeddyurappa retained his home seat of Shikaripura in Shimoga district but suffered a massive defeat personally when his staunch loyalist and the only woman minister in the BJP government Shobha Karandlaje was relegated to third place in Rajajinagar in Bangalore.

He had pitted her against Law Minister S. Suresh Kumar who retained the seat. The Congress took second place.

The Yeddyurappa-led Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) was set to win six seats out of the 223 seats it contested.

Polling was held only for 223 seats as in one constituency it has been put off to this month-end following the death of the BJP candidate.

The BSR Congress of Sriramulu, a loyalist of jailed mining baron G. Janardhana Reddy, was likely to bag four seats out of the large number of seats it contested.

The earlier efforts to build regional parties were made by former chief ministers D. Devraj Urs, S. Bangarappa and Ramakrishna Hegde. The three have since passed away.

Voters should also finish JDs because they work as blackmailers and money makers in the government. We need only two political parties so that the party which losses shall do introspection and prepare for next election.

The regional parties are having good followers when the national parties are not doing well.People shoule always encourage national parties because they are always strong provided they too inculcate the habbit of taking regional interst as well.Hope, people understand the limtation of the regional parties and support national parties more.Thanq.

The crooked idea was to be a 'King Maker' and now from the scathing lesson learnt, many would now have
to resort to 'Pace Maker' to keep their heart beat regular!

    Not only Karnataka,
For all small or regional parties not striving for longevity, are heading towards graveyard in India.

It is advisable for all small or regional parties to merge with bigger parties or come under one umbrella of third front consisting of all regional parties.

In unity they will have strength.

Karnataka Predominantly a Congress bastion for the past several decades changed the parties whenever Congress failed to deliver.Regional party culture is not the cup of tea of Karnataka voters unlike TN in south UP in north and so...In spite of revolt, dissent, competition for coveted post and dozen core leaders with in Congress as an National party,Congress, able to garner 121 seats which means a clear mandate for national party, Congress. HDK, JDS supremo,in a interview, virtually in tears and disappointed over the result and faring of his party even though he did get more seats than 2008 Assembly election.

Congress Party and leaders has a huge responsibility and accountability in a reciprocal gesture to deliver. BJP being,National Party and outgoing ruling party,in fact, reduced to regional outfit which is not anticipated of 40 seats from it's friend or foes.It is a warning bell for Congress too...Perform or quit. BSR,KJP and JDS will remain a non entity in Karnataka politics but if my guess going to near correct BSY will join BJP as BSR may follow the suit.

Good thing for Karnataka that Congress got majority on its own. If Congress is able to keep their infighting under control and rule for 5 years then it can be safely said BJP is politically out. But personally,I am not in favour of that. I would prefer BJP as opposition any day rather than having to give a fringe party (without any policy) some kind of importance. As you rightly mentioned (warning bell), Congress must perform. It is easy. First two years 'Honeymoon' period, blame BJP for everything. Price hike (further) of milk, electricity, KSRTC bus fare, road tax, octroi can be easily blamed on BJP. Standard statement - 'BJP has emptied the state coffers'. In the third year roll back all decisions taken by previous government, important being the infamous 'cow slaughter'. Start slaughterhouse in every assembly segment (especially where Congress has won) and start distributing beef at 10 Rs per kg. If possible make beef eating compulsory as it is found to be highly nutritious and tasty. In the 4th and 5th year start some more populist schemes in one of the Gandhi's name (to add to the list of 140 plus schemes) like 1 kg rice at 1 Rs. (to be delivered free to their house).Anyway, my best wishes to the new government (most probably led by Siddaramaiah)
