Mangalore: Policeman accidentally breaks rickshaw glass, drivers go on protest

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, May 24: Auto rickshaw drivers staged a flash protest near Muthappa Temple here on Friday May 24, after a traffic policeman accidentally broke an auto rickshaw's windshield.

Moidin, an auto rickshaw driver from Adyar, was ferrying passengers to the railway station. He stopped the auto (KA 19 AA 505) near Muthappan Temple in railway colony.

When the passengers were alighting from the auto, a traffic policeman approached Moidin and asked him to move his auto a little further away. However, to caution him, the policeman hit the windshield harder than he intended to, and broke the glass on the auto.

Angered by the incident, auto drivers including Moidin gathered together and started protesting. They raised slogans and demanded immediate action in the matter. The protest lasted for about 45 minutes, locals said.

Inspector C N Diwakar arrived at the spot and calmed down the protestors. He assured that he will bring the matter to the notice of higher authorities and that the police would repair the auto.

In response, Ivan D'Souza, president of auto rickshaw owners' union who was among the protestors warned that if the auto was not repaired within three days, they would protest in front of the traffic police station until their demands were met.

Following the assurance by inspector Diwakar, the protest was withdrawn.

Why all these nasty comments about auto drivers? In my experience Mangalore has some of the best auto drivers in the country. Go to Hyderabad or Chennai and try to get anyone to use the meter. In Mangalore sometimes they might ask for more if you're going to somewhere like Yekkur, but that's because the road is so bad it messes up the auto and there's no customers to pick up on return. Their profit margin is so low you can't blame them. Think for a minute, if they were making a big profit then they would take people- it's not their fault living costs, petrol prices and road conditions force them into asking a little more here and there.

Just compare that scratch on the windshield with the drama of protest by so many auto drivers that it has invoked. Is all of this really necessary? The driver could have sorted it out himself. On second thought it goes on to reveal the poor quality of the windshield as well.

"Mr. Ivan D'Souza, President of Auto Rickshaw Owners' Union", I have a few questions for you
Where are you when the same nasty auto drivers don't agree to take passengers to their desired destination?
Where are you when they demand Rs. 100 from Railway Station to Pumpwell Circle at 8.00 am?
Where are you when aged and helpless passengers have to walk all the way to Milagres junction with their luggage just because the auto drivers are not interested to take them where they want?

1.Policemen should be given soft-tipped flexible lathis. 2. Training should be given so as to hit imparting only 10N force, making only a thud sound. 3. Instead of asking auto driver to move, policeman should send him an SMS. 4. Investigation is needed how the glass broke in a 'Udaya Surya' pattern, and not 'Kamala' pattern, or 'Abhaya Hasta' pattern. There is some political seenthri here. 5. Leaving aside the policemen, and autodrivers, how many in the crowd have no jambara?

Dear Ivan you and your auto drivers are not fit to be on Mangalore roads. Go to BJP office which is near PVS building. Opposite that there is an auto line if there are no autos you will never even think that it is a place for autos and if you park your car then by the time you are back you will have a flat tyre or scratches on your car. Mr.Ivan tell your auto drivers to have a give and take attitude, share the space when available, clap with both HANDS
