Mumbai to Kundapur - A youngster's 10-day adventure on bicycle

Mumbai to Kundapur - A youngster's 10-day adventure on bicycle

Kundapur, May 25: At a time youngsters of his age normally stay glued to office or home computers, televisions or cell phones, a boy hailing from Koteshwar in the outskirts of the town, resorted to something else. This adventurous youth covered nearly 900 km distance from Mumbai to Koteshwar on his bicycle.

Meet Ralph D’Mello, who works for Royal Bank of Scotland’s Mumbai branch. Ralph, who continues to pursue postgraduate education while working in the bank, always was interested in spending time on the seashore by laying a fishing line and waiting for the fish to fall to his bait.

During his sojourns to the seashore, he used to travel by bicycle. After the idea of travelling to his native place on bicycle struck to his mind, he prepared his bicycle for the long journey. Ralph could have chosen winter for the purpose, as it is easier to pedal the two-wheeler then, but he specifically chose summer, as it poses more challenges.

Ralph, son of Henry D’Mello and Cynthia D’Mello, who used to be residents of Koteshwar, now stays with family at CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai. Still, attraction towards his native place remains intact in him.

Ralph set out for his adventure at 6.30 am on May 13. He chose not to use the highway for his journey. He travelled through Borivli in Mumbai, Murudjanjeera, Harihareshwar, Harne, Valkeshwar, Ratnagiri, Sagri Marg, Deogarh, Vengurla, Karwar, Om Beach Gokarn and Kumta. After reaching Kumta, he had no choice but to opt to travel through the national highway. After covering a distance of about 845 km, he reached Koteshwar at 8.30 pm on Wednesday May 22.

Ralph said he had covered 120 km on the first day, but slowed down a bit thereafter, as he spent time on the beaches he came across. During every visit to the beaches, he went in search of angling points. He found attractive angling points in Om Beach and Ganapatipura. He plans to visit these places to keep alive his hobby of fishing during holidays.

Ralph knows in and out about repairing of bicycles, and carried puncture kit, four spare tubes, sleeping bag, hand pump, medical kit, portable charger, clothes, and drinking water can with him. However, his bicycle never gave him any problem during the ten-day journey.

“I am proud of my achievement. I plan to register more adventures in future. However, I need good support and encouragement for taking up such feats,” says Ralph.

First of all my congratulations to this young fellow for his achievement and the adventurous life he has undertaken.

He will be a role model for the youth of these days. Try deferent. Not just the TV or the Cricket.

When I spoke to Ralf personally, though he said that, he had no punctures through the journey, his break pads were completely worn out and that would have put him to very dangerous condition.

    In the meanwhile,

I congratulate the ‘DAIJIWORLD’ reporter form Kundapura for identifying the talents and bringing them to the limelight.

Congrats DAIJI AND THE KUNDAPURA REPORTER.

Congratulations Ralph! adventurous indeed.Cycling is totally disappearing now a days. Our youngsters are fascinated toward motor bikes.According to world health organization survey 30-40% world's cariac patients are from India.Every 3 among 10 Indians are diabetic. Why do we have poor health standard. It is mainly due due to change in life style.Lack of physical activity and mental stress.Need of the hour is we have to minimize watching TV,motor vehicles.Opt to healthy diet, regular out door activities like cycling, walking, swimming, games etc.If not corrected right now, time will come where young India will survive on pills with intelligent brain and inferior body.

Congratulations Ralph. With your technical efficiency, you have the ability to alter and modify your cycle, which can also carry a family or group of friends, with more space to accommodate your provisions, tools and accessories, much lesser peddling force, more speed and safety. If a tiny mobile can perform amazing multiple tasks, why a cycle to carry only single rider, for ages? If you want to utilize your excellent talent, I have a matured idea to support.

I am impressed what this young Indian has done to ride his bicycle nearly 900 km from Mumbai to Koteshwar. Ralph D´Mello must be physically very fit.
As a European is it difficult to imagine how it is possible to travel such a long distance during Indian summer. I just think of the terrible heat and the humidity.
I am of the opinion what Ralp did, is an extraordinary achievement. Only few young people would have the desire to do the same.
Riding the bicycle for nearly 900 km shows his determination, strength and his strong will.
The majority of young people of his age prefer to stay glued to home or home computers, televisions or cell phones.
I read in the article that Ralph covered 120 km on the first day. 120 km on his cycle though he felt the unbearable heat. That shows the ambition of Ralph not to give in. He knew, beautiful beaches waited for him where he could rest, and he went in search of angling points.
Yes, he can be proud of his achievement. CONGRATULATION Ralph.

    Best regards

Ralph, First of all congrats.. Its indeed a great feat. and quite an adventurous one too. The route you have taken was also very dangerous, especially the Maharastra side. But it is quite an achievement to do this at such a young age. May you continue your passion or rather i call it madness and may we all see many such enduvours in future. Let the youngsters get inspirations from deeds like these and spend time doing something fruitful. God bless you and take care.
