Mangalore, May 25: A nine-year-old boy met a tragic end when he was electrocuted while playing in the premises of his residence at Marnamikatta here on Saturday May 25.

The deceased has been identfied as Nadeem (9), son of Abdul Sattar, a resident of Husna Mansion flats at Kuthpady road, Marnamikatta. Sattar is the propritor of the flats.

The premises has a high-tension transformer surrounded by grills as protection. However, the transformer is within an arm's distance if one climbs the grills.

It is said that Nadeem, while playing, climbed the grills and reached out to the transformer, and died on spot as high-voltage current passed through him. A part of his hand got stuck in the transformer and got detached from the body. It was later pried out by Mescom personnel.

Though some of the family members were present, everything happened too quickly and they could not save him, it is learnt. He was taken to Unity hospital.

Nabeel was studying in the 4th standard at Sarojini Madhusudan Kushe School, Attavar.

Pandeshwar police will register a case.

Rudolf, I do agree with you that deaths have taken place when line men work on the power line, due to accidental switching. Even in the best of the Company, Aramco, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, following highest standards of Safety, electrical accidents have taken place when I lived there. Once such instance was involving 220 KV (2,20,000 volts) Extra High Tension power line which evacuates power from the generating station, on high Steel Towers. Accident do take place.
Secondly, there is a device called ELCB(Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker), a good quality costs around Rs. 2,000/- for the domestic use, and when it is installed in the house, which cuts of the power supply to the premises, moment somebody comes in contact with live electrical wire inside the house, or if there is leakage in the house. Majority of the houses do not fit these device.
Finally, it is ones own responsibility to take care of themselves, whether with electricity, walking on the road, or driving a vehicle, ETC. Life once lost can not be brought back. Prevention is always better than cure. JAI HIND.

Dear Edward, I have raised a simple question, why the electrician/ line man in the above photograph is not wearing safety gloves.

Whether the main switch is switched off or not, it is immaterial. Please try to understand what is TQM and your outlook will be different.

Dear Edward, I agree with your views about possibility of accidents even with the highest safety standards, but then dont you agree that the possibility of an accident exponentially when even basic safety rules are not followed, which is evident from the repeated electrocution deaths from various places in and around Mangluru!!

And how can you compare the safety standards of ARAMCO which is flush with easy money and a corrupt developing country like India!! Just have a close look of the quality of transformers and the they way they are erected with sloppy wiring and rusted clamps and dangerously tilted poles!!

Also, what a 9 year old child will know what is the danger of going near a HV transformer? In the first place how could he get near it if safety guidelines were followed?

When basic safety rules are not followed, where does the question of using costly ELCB arise!!1

Dear readers, I wouldn't know whether this unfortunate incident has taken place within the metropolis jurisdiction of Mangalore or the outskirts as I am a resident of Bombay. However, one thing is for sure, supply of electricity in the Bombay metropolis is done through underground power lines unlike overhead power cables. Alternately, overhead power to the rural areas are erratic due to the phase system wherein energy is supplied through transformers which I envisage is the case in Marnamikatta. Irrespective of the above the energy companies must be consistent with uninterrupted power supply and do away with the outdated transformers which are hazardous. Unlike rectifier units which trips are mostly expedited by the energy companies at the least possible time, the same is not the case with supply from transformers, where if a phase is tripped the entire locality is plunged into darkness for days together and consumers are left at the mercy of the line man to attend the fault. There are known cases of several illegal defaulters who are meticulous indeed and are aware of the know- hows of stealing power through transformers resulting in the loss to energy companies.

Rudolf, well said. Unlike blue-chip power companies (TATA for one), one will never expect employees complying fully to safety regulations even if there are incidents more severe than this. The tendencies of most companies (employers) be it private or public sectors will adopt the ''chaltha hai chalatha hai'' policy only to ensure that they do lip service. There is no dearth of illiterate employees by-passing strictures / policies / norms laid down for their own benefit. It is a the ''chaltha hai chalatha hai'' policy after all.

Edward Monteiro, there is no doubt that he is an authorized lineman of the co., but is there no requirement of safety gear even though they have ensured that the power is switched off to take care of a rare or unexpected event!! Also, he is in the process of removing the dismembered burnt body part of the unfortunate victim with his bare hands!! There too, medically, he has to have surgical gloves on!! Also, just check out the guard grills, at what distance and height it has been constructed If the guard and positioning of the transformer was done complying to the full safety requirements how come a 9 year old kid climb over and reach inside and get near the transformer??

Do you know of the fact there are periodic deaths of these same so called trained linemen when they are working on top of poles by accidental switching on of power by their own people due to lack of coordination between themselves!!

One has to see himself how the transformers are placed outside balconies of new buildings for lack of space that a naive person or child can easily reach it with a sufficiently long conducting object and get electrocuted!! What sort of safety protocol are they following!!

Safety is totally disregarded out here!! There is absolutely no value for human life!! Only God can save us from sudden deaths like these!!

Harold D'Cunha/Rudolf, Mangalore: The person working on the transformer is the authorized Line Man and not an ordinary electrician. Some of the ordinary electricians do not know about basic electricity. This is a fact.

The transformers are fed with power supply from the Power Station, through the High Tension
11 KV(11,000 volts) Feeder line, which has induction upto 4ft when the line is charged, which means somebody can not go near by it when it is in charged condition. The Line man can not work on the transformer unless the supply of of 11 kv is switched off, which is done by G.O.S.(Ground operated switch) mounted on the double pole structure on the road sides at intermediate points of the 11 KV Feeder line and the similar switched is provided to each installed transformers whether it is on the road side transformers or in the customer premises. These 11 KV feeder automatically trip at the Power Station, if the earth fault(power line getting grounded) takes place at any point on the feeder line. Let us not have wrong notions about the safety of the Main Power line. Accidents do take place, the reasons could be many. Jai Hind.

Very sad incident and our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved members of the family. May God give the family members to bear this loss.

In safety measure and adapting safety procedure, sorry to say, our standard of procedure and application is sub standard or below any level.

Look at the electrician in the photograph, he has no safety gloves when he is working in this high tension voltage wires. Either he is not trained properly nor this concept of safety procedures are not followed by them. Hope the higher up authorities will wake up and take necessary steps for training and adaption of safety procedures.

Let us all together pay homage to the deceased boy. If we wants to blame anyone then we have to blame both. Looking at the incidents what had happened, MESCOM should ensure further safety concerns by totally forbidding residents to come near to the transformer area by barricading or locking the area with safety keys. Same time parents should also restrict their children to go near to the electric appliances by teaching them dangerous situation like this.

Very tragic and unfortunate incident!! RIP in Nadeem! Agree Leslie Fernandes, this is due to the utter negligence of MESCOM and the builder that a small child could cross over into the danger zone and come in contact with a live wire!! How can one educate a toddler about the dangers of electricity, most of the time they are in their own innocent world!! Even the parents cannot be after the child 24x7!!

It is pretty common in this part of the world to see deaths due to electrocution. Recently a man plucking areaca died after his plucking stick came in contact with a low passing HT wire!!

These type of open placing of transformers is a potential hazard!! I have read people getting electrocuted after accidental indirect contact with even kite threads!! Thank God, unlike Mumbai there is no active kite flying in vogue in and around Mangalore!!

Along with road accidents, this live wires hanging here and there without following any protocol are the biggest life takers!! God save us!!

Although i saw this news in the morning I could not comment by seeing the hand of the little boy separated from his body...!!!! I blame Authorities for giving connection in such a situation......Authorities are after money and they do not care what the danger is.....!!!!????? I do not blame the developer...who wants to save money without knowing the danger...!!!!??? It is unfortunate that his son is the one lost life.

A small boy left this world so early. He may not be aware of the danger of touching it. With this incident can the Govt. alert all the building owners to put the fence at a maximum safe distance so that in future these things can be avoided all over the state at least?

Sad that young boy lost his life. May his soul rest in peace.

Mr Ismail, Yanbu, KSA and Kishore, UAE: In the news it is mentioned that the Electrical Transformer which is installed in the premises of the building, for supplying power supply exclusively to the building is properly protected by means of grills as per required norms and rules.

When the boy had climbed the grills protecting the Transformer dies, in what way the Building Owner, Contractor and MESCOM responsible for this? It is easy to blame others when the fault lies with the boy for climbing the grills. The parents should teach our children the danger of climbing the electrical poles. In the same way, if somebody climbes Power Line Poles carrying High Tension 11KV Feeder Line(11,000 volts) and distribution lines of 440 volts, on the road sides, in what way the Power Utility Company ( MESCOM) responsible for this? Besides it is an offence to climb the power lines poles and the protected Power Installation having Power Transformers and 11 KV Feeder Line. It is only the licensed/authorized person can climb the poles.

It is easy to write comments by blaming others, sitting in the Gulf Countries without knowing the facts. I had lived in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and seen shably installed power Transformers on the road sides there without any protection. Only in the ARAMCO camps, where I lived, all the safety precautions were taken when the power lines were installed. Let us know the facts first before blaming others. JAI HIND.
