Mangalore: Close shave for bus passengers, driver's presence of mind averts tragedy

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (BG)

Mangalore, May 28: Rains have just started, but problems due to slippery roads seem to have already begun.

The passengers of a KSRTC bus had a close shave after it skidded off the road and hit the bridge near Bangra Kulur on NH 66.

The bus was plying from Badami to Mangalore, via Udupi.

The incident occurred at around 5:45 am on Tuesday May 28. The bus that was heading towards Mangalore had 20 to 25 passengers aboard.

The driver of the bus tried to apply the brakes, but as the roads were slippery due to the heavy rain, the bus skidded off the road.

Alarmed by the incident, a few passengers even tried to jump off the bus, it is learnt. But the driver's presence of mind enabled him to control the bus and bring it to a stop just at the right moment, thus saving 20-25 lives. Had the bus gone a little further, there was every chance of the vehicle falling over the bridge thus resulting in a major tragedy, said locals who were at the spot.

The passengers and the bus staff suffered minor bruises. No casualities were reported.

Another bus was hired to ferry the stranded passengers to Mangalore.

    Mr.S.S. D'Souza, Udupi and Jaimini P.B., Manipal,Sharjah.
I totally agree with your comments. There are two types of drivers:
1.Good Drivers - GD Protect passengers by sensing every danger under the wheel to avoid the accidents, even if someone cause for accident.
2.Bad Drivers- BD are just a drivers who are force to work for money or killing time for their gain.
    >Rule is :Nobody have right to play on others life.

Solution: Safety Standreds which includes improved road condition, Fines and Penalties after investigation and suspending license without pay if required.
    >Above all only non-corrupt traffic rules enforcement officers to investigate the case.

Leyland doesn't skid & doesn't roll . It is the negligence of the driver which caused this accident, probably sleepy eyes (nidre kann). A skidding vehicle is totally uncontrollable unless of course it comes to rest on its own, no matter how good your driving skills are.

Probably the tyres have worn out. This could be the reason for skid

It is very unfortunate these days to hear about so many major accidents from KSRTC.Special study is required to be initiated to find the causes and reasons for these accidents and if required refreshing training need to be given to the drivers and conductors.Hope the department and the competant minister look after this issue and take corrective measures without any further delay.Thanq.

KSRTC bus drivers are suppose to be more organised and disciplined but in reality it is other way round.
    Please tighten their noose.

    Jossy,

Probably you are not aware that its the first rains that cause havoc on the roads. The oil thats spilt on the road during summer mixes with the water and creates a slippery surface. Once it rains continuously all the oil is washed off and the roads arent that silppery. Hope you understand this. KSRTC has one of the best drivers and has a very good safety record considering the number of passengers they ply daily.

This bridge must be British built otherwise bus would have plunged! In many countries within hours they start repair of bridge and bill goes to bus company and they may claim insurance but first pay for the damage. In Mangalore it may take years for the repair looking at traditional track record.

Was it a slippery road and the sudden application of brakes caused the bus to hit the bridge raling or was it a hangover of previous night drink? When you drive on bridges, the speed should be minimum and extra care should be applied if roads are wet.

It doesn't look so, presence of mind - citing the slippery road as reason, he is defending himself.

If the driver of the bus was in a hangover, then he could not try to apply the brakes. His presence of mind only saved 20 – 25 lives.

    Appreciated………good job.

Since bus, lorry drivers lack proper sense of driving, i would suggest for speed breakers at the approach of the bridges so that the speed is reduced to 20kmph so that drivers have time to adjust themselves as they drive on the bridges too.

    Dear Sir,
Please, you being in the Gulf, are more aware that the speed breakers are not installed just to save people from bad drivers road signs do that job for sensible one's. We, who drive in and around Mangalore are aware of the limitations on the roads. Please understand that the approaches to the bridges are so bad, they act like speed breakers without intending to do so. If you are above 40km, you are bound to fly a few meters. Coming to speed breakers, we have too many in the city. The highest speed limit I know is 25km near RTO and the bus drivers, in a bid to reach before the trip is cancelled and to turn without hitting some one else at AB Shetty circle, take to the last lane, supposed to enter Old Kent Road on the opposite side. This is our road planning for you. Car street is, after keeping enough space for marked parking of vehicles, fit only for pushing hand carts but unfortunately, we have best of the cars plying that area. The road markers and lights which were installed recently are most UN-scientific. Blame the drivers, if you will but, human weakness at the natures actions should be considered and we should comment only after thorough enquiry.

    @Alex D'souza, M'lore,
i have no arguments with your opinion. My aim not just to blame the drivers, cos i myself too drive in my beloved coastal area, and as you said bad designing of roads, road surfaces are to be blamed for most accidents, and we hope our new Congress administration will look into this matter.

My sincere request to you :

You being in Mangalore, pls raise this issue with JRL, our dynamic new MLA, and any others you think could be helpful.

One more thing, here in the Gulf, inspite of much better roads, poor traffic sense, rash driving causes more deaths per capita than many countries.

Wish us all safe driving from now on.

Why speed up / over takes at bridges ?? Apply presence of mind and slow down at bridges and turns but not sudden breaks to control the situations. Driver's over confidence can cause loss of lives !

What presence of mind is used in this case..!!??? He supposed to know at what speed he can drive in such conditions and he must know the condition of the bus also..!!?? in this case it looks like there is no presence of mind, instead he at fault to drive the bus at uncontrolable speed.

    Prof.Charles..
If passengers are not jumped out..may be 'Bus' would haven't skidded so much..!!
It's only due to indidivual....and his presence of mind..with god's blessings..able to halt the bus..!!
What would have happen..if even 'driver' would have jumped out leaving behind bus to fall..big disaster happened below the bridge..!!
Person who take right decision on right time..should always be appreciated.. Do Driver don't have family..!!
