Sullia: Leaking diesel, petrol flow on road - Locals make merry

Daijiworld Media Network – Sullia (SP)

Sullia, May 28: A tanker carrying petrol and diesel tripped and fell across the road at Baitadka, Adkar near Jalsoor in the taluk on Monday May 27 evening and started leaking. The people, throwing all precautions to the wind, gathered at the spot in large numbers to collect diesel and petrol in containers of different sizes.

The tanker was carrying diesel and petrol to Kushalnagar from Mangalore, when it fell while negotiating a steep road bend.

Initially, diesel and petrol started trickling in small quantities, but the people who gathered there worked out a bigger hole so that they get ample opportunities to loot the leaking these highly inflammable liquids. Drums, cans, bottles, utensils, etc were used to carry the petroleum products home or fill the tanks of their vehicles.

The driver of the tanker, Monappa, and cleaner, Sushanth, however, escaped unhurt. The locals said that the bend here has become steeper after the road was widened two weeks back by Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd, and that heavy vehicles find it harder to negotiate this stretch.

The police later reached the spot, dispersed the crowd, and stopped the leakage by using clothes. A crane was hired to lift the truck from its position.

No difference between ordinary citizens and politicians. Given a chance ordinary citizens will behave in an identical manner. So why point fingers at politicians?

Crazy! I just wonder if anyone of those guys gathered there to get the fuel that was leaking from the tank, is aware of the enormous danger they were facing. Seeing those photographs I can say the people are so happy to collect the free-for-all diesel and they don't even have an iota of fear in their face. That is really terrifying.

There were a few such cases in Nigeria and other parts of Africa, where people were collecting petrol that was leaking from pipes or tanks and suddenly the pipes getting exploded from some spark, destroying not only those on the spot to their charred bodies but also homes and buildings around the area to dust. I don't think a smoker would remember to be careful not to throw the cigarette-butt that is enough to ignite the fire.

There are some safety standards for designing a fuel tanker. All advanced countries have strict control on this. There is need to introduce anti roll-over protection, safety guard to the overhead outlets, flame arrest or type venting etc. Unfortunately our country has advanced only in corruption and political games, taxing poor people more and more and allowing scam-masters and tax evaders to go free. Poor salaried people are made to pay tax and this is never put into good use.
Why can't our RTO and Fire Depts bring in some new regulations on fuel tankers which they can copy from other countries?

What a foolish act by public. If at all there would have been a spark then the whole truck would have caught fire and burst into flames. Surely then, lost some valid human lives. Why play in such a haste and careless manner. Oh God please save us

    Patric..
    Cannot even blame them..
In developing countries like in Japan..'tomatoes' are grown in between lanes..if by chance fallen out..people as a duty keep them in it's original place...as it's belonged to government..
In our country..government itself is 'corrupt'..that's the reason people fed-up with living conditions..are are involved in such things..a cheap act..!! Day is not too long..when people enter your home..and snatch food..!!
Reason behind..government not providing basic amenites to public..that's there right..!!

Well done Sulliaites, some of you have tried your best to become national news. Thankfully your efforts did not succeed. Public will never learn. People have not spared even chips packet of the bike rider who got killed in collision with private bombay bus near katapadi some years ago. We have become so shameless see the way within minutes how people managed those big containers to collect diesel. One person (yellow bucket) appears to have taken bath in diesel.

Here no one try to help driver..
    Everybody think of themselves...
Driver is on shock..thinking how to re-pay lost amount to the owner..and damage occur to tanker..
At last poor many suffers..due to natural disaster..
It looks like same in 60's British Ship carrying 'Gold Biscuits' bound to Bombay..involved in 'Fire'..It fled too far..people are after Gold Biscuits too collect..by which some are become 'rich' overnight..!!

The public was lucky enough, since no one threw any cigarette / beedi but in the leaking oil, otherwise there would have been another INFERNO. The public proved that they are illiterate and do not have common sense. GOD SAVE SUCH IRRESPONSIBLE PUBLIC. The Police should have swung in to action, cordoned off the area, safety and precautionary measures should have undertaken. The Police should have done this job at least for the salaries they are taking.
