Two MLAs take oath in Marathi in Karnataka Assembly

Bangalore, May 29 (PTI): Wearing traditional Maharashtrian headgear, two members took oath in Marathi as maiden session of the 14th Karnataka Legislative Assembly commenced today.

Sporting saffron-coloured "pagadi", Arvind Chandrakant Patil (Khanapur) and Sambhaji Laxman Patil (Belgaum Dakshin), belonging to Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) and elected from Belgaum district bordering Maharashtra, were among the 146 newly elected members who were sworn in on the first day.

First two days of the session which would conclude on June seven were earmarked for oath-taking exercise. Protem Speaker Malikayya Guttedar was in the Chair. Senior member Kagodu Thimmappa (Congress) is slated to be elected as Speaker on Friday.

The Congress has 121 members in the 224-member House, with the BJP and JDS having 40 MLAs each. JDS has been recognised as the principal opposition, having recorded higher vote-share in the May five Assembly polls.

JDS state unit President H D Kumaraswamy, who was elected from Ramanagara Assembly segment and recently resigned as Lok Sabha member, is all set to become Leader of Opposition. The House has 56 first-time MLAs.

Amidst scenes of bonhomie, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was first to take oath, followed by his Ministerial colleagues.

Former Chief Ministers Jagadish Shettar (BJP) and B S Yeddyurappa (Karnataka Janatha Paksha) were among those who were sworn in along with industrialist-producer Ashok Kheny, who is the owner of Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises.

Governor H R Bhardwaj is slated to deliver his address to the joint session on June three. The Legislative Council will sit from June four to seven.

Meanwhile, counting of votes in Periyapatna Assembly segment, which went to polls yesterday after being postponed following the death of BJP candidate Sannamoge Gowda on April 29, will be taken up on May 31.

Unlike other southern states, Karnataka is a multilingual state. There are Marathi schools in north Karnataka. Marathi is the official language of Belgaum Municipal Corporation. In fact Marathi is also one of the languages of Karnataka along with Konkani, Tulu and Beary. Kannadigas form less than 65% of the population of Karnataka. So what is wrong in taking oath in Marathi or any other language spoken the state?

Why these MLA's are dividing people in language basis... In assembly they should use common language which is our State language. It should make compulsory.. How these MLA's talk about their area problems in the assembly? if they tell in Marati any others will come to know what they talk???? Ban all other language in Assembly... only one common language should be used just like in schools how the students use. It will show some discipline in Assembly...

These two ministers are like weeds..If they are not competent to speak the state language, they should take oath either in Hindi or English and not in Marathi. In spite of border issues with Maharashtra from a very long time ,I am surprised to hear that there is no reaction about their Oath in Marathi .Atlast this happens only in Karnataka and that too with this government.

Now we should open school and colleges in Konkani and Tulu in Karavali areas, so that the future MLA's can claim that they went to their own language school and learned Tulu and Konkani as their Mother tongue and want to take oath in their mother tongue like Marathi & Malayalam. It is very sad Mangaloreans want to send their kids to English Medium school and use more English in Konkani and Kannada & Tulu. Now they argue about their mother tongue. Have you heard English in Malayalam and Marathi when those regions people speak their language?

I think one should not attach too much importance to language, religion or caste upper or lower.

More deep we go, more the problem!

Character, ethics and ability of the person is more important than Language, religion or caste.

@Valerian Dsouza - Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Konkani languages are part of different states. Tulu lang is part of Karntaka. So it wont be wrong if u take oath in TULU. Still Congress leaders of Tulunadu didnt put pressure on UPA to add Tulu in to 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

You are right. Under congress rule in last 60 years, Tulu was neglected beyond imagination. But BJP Govt gave due importance to Tulu and introduced in academics as optional language. If this govt has little-bit care towards tulu, it should make tulu compulsory language in schools of DK and Udupi.

Das, Kudla, our Karavali MLA's can't take oath in Tulu, because Tulu language is not recognised by Indian Constitution. They can take oath in Konkani or any other languages those were recognised by the Indian Constitution.
