Bangalore: S R Patil allays IT industry's concern over his age, ability

Bangalore, May 31 (IANS): Karnataka's new IT and Biotechnology Industry (BT) Minister S.R. Patil has sought to allay the industry's misgivings on his ability to handle the portfolio despite his age and little exposure to the knowledge sector.

"What has age got to do with the post? It is the prerogative of the chief minister to allocate any portfolio to his ministers. I have the ability to discharge my duties and responsibilities to the best of my ability with four decades in public life," Patil, 65, told IANS Friday.

A controversy broke out in the local media after Manipal Global Education chairman and former Infosys director T.V. Mohandas Pai tweeted "It is a very sad day for us" soon after Patil was allocated the IT and biotechnology industry portfolio May 26.

"Patil is a seasoned politician and the (ruling) party's leader in the council. But ministers like R. Gundu Rao or Krishna Byre Gowda would have been more suitable as they are younger and more capable to connect with a global audience as they would have better understanding of the industry," Pai said.

Biocon Ltd. chairperson Kiran Mazumdar Shaw also tweeted: "Patil has a good reputation. I look forward to his support for IT and BT, but (am) surprised that (a) younger tech-savvy person (was) not picked."

"As two important sectors of the state economy, IT and BT need to be given additional thrust to attract more investors to the state and facilitate their expansion in view of the competition from other states and overseas countries," Shaw said.

"The portfolios may be new to me but I am familiar with the industry as I have seen its growth and also use e-mail. Computers and mobiles are not new to me. We all use them. The industry functions under the guidance and supervision of the respective departments with well-laid policies and budgets," Patil said.

The industry representatives, however, say that a ministry like the IT and BT requires a young and tech-savvy minister who can engage with global executives and retain the image of Karnataka as a preferred investment destination in the knowledge sector.

As ruling party's lawmakers, Rao and Gowda, who got elected in the May 5 assembly polls from the city constituencies, were made ministers of state for food & civil supplies and agriculture with independent charge.

"I am as much committed to the growth of the knowledge sector in the state as the industry. I am open to their (the industry's) suggestions and advise to ensure Karnataka remains a preferred destination for global firms and investors," Patil added.

If ever Bill Gates launches Windows Kannada that would be a proud moment for Kannadigas for Kannada is our mother tongue, may be not so for you as it appears you feel embarrassed being a Kannadiga. FYI people of only 54 countries know English. In India, only 12% of the population knows English. Therefore the minister stands in the majority. Come on fellow, he is a minister- the policy maker, he needn't to be so humble, yet he is so I do believe, to communicate in a language which is alien to him. Age is certainly not a factor as long as he discharges his duties perfectly up to the expectations. He got 5 years to go, to show what he has in store for the IT & BT. Please ITBT guys, shed off your ego,for ITBT are the byproducts of mainstream engineering. The presence of ITBT depends upon the existence of mainstream engineering.i.e. your presence doesn't matter. People lived without that for ages.

Mr. Minister you are not too old to understand the concept of IT, BT.You are also not much older than Modi, Advani and Shushma. Take a bold step with a high profile team and show what you are. Remember, when Krishnajee was CM, IT industry flourished like anything. But there were no gadgets of today's kind. Still he did his job with a good team.

For SR Patil, IT means Income Tax. BT means BT Badanekayi. That is what he knows about IT/BT. He does not understand what MD Pai, Mazumdhar speaks..

You must know that Mohandas Pai and Kiran Mazumdar are not only two voices in IT and BT. Just because they say something it does not become universal. Further, if the minister proves to inefficient he will be replaced. Your frustration of BJP's loss is turning out to be cynicism against the winning party. That's you were voiceless when BJP got thrashed and now you pick holes even in the minute things of Congress and JD(S)

For a frustrated person every one else looks frustrated. If you were not, then you would have criticised the portfolios of the previous government too. Now for you everyone looks unfit. After all you have to accept the fact the people have chosen the present government by booting out the previous.
By the Patil has studied Law whereas the great MP of Mangalore in SSLC (pass or fail?).

People who talk against S R Patil and his age are not knowing the facts. Our CM has given the ministerial portfolios to the new Ministers with due consideration and if this Minister (or any Minister for that matter) does not perform well he will be changed/replaced. No need to panic. Let us give him some time and see his performance. We should not jump for conclusions and criticize everything that Congress government is doing. As HDK, the leader of opposition, has clearly stated that we must give 6 months to this Govt to perform. I am sure Congress Govt will surely perform well. Jai Ho Congress!

Come on fellow, he is not anticipating any job in the industries run by Pai & Mazumdar. He is there to look after if their needs were catered by the ministry under him & also regularize the industry. For that he needn't have to sit in front of a computer all the time & stroke the keys frantically.

There is no logic in demanding Minister should be knowing about IT.. what IT knowledge Mr Azim Premji has, who was selling Oil before, If you are a good leader you can achieve, Even TCS was not managed by technocrats...I hope Mr Patil will run the ministry efficiently.. By the Mr P. Chidambaram is a lawyer not an expert in Finance who was a good commerce minister in PV Narasimha Rao Govt, though he is ruining Indian economy now as Finance Minister..

The IT & BT sectors' concerns are valid but need not true always. Ministries are run by efficient, qualified bureacrats and officers and not by ministers. Actually a minister is more of a 'display piece' than an original one. In our country, these ministers limit themselves to seeing the transfers, allocating the tenders (to their kith and kin) etc. Even though they head the ministry, they are not responsible for the day-to-day running of the ministry. Going by this logic, agricultural ministry should be headed by a progressive agriculturist, health ministry by a doctor, finance ministry by a qualified and reputed economist, higher education ministry by a scholar, medical education by a doctor and last but not least 'excise ministry' by a 'drunkard'?

I agree with you Leslie...In India how many politicians posses Doctorate degrees or even qualified to take any given ministry...!!!???? It is a team work and minister must be open for suggestions and the particular industry can advise them what is good for the nation and what is good for the Industry. I do not think anybody is so stupid not to understand the suggestions given by the Industry....!!!????

These ministers who have no idea of the latest trends in IT & BT sector are sure to create a mess of everything. The CM should weigh all the pros and cons before alloting the portfolios but now a days the portfolios are alloted on the basis of caste representations and not on merit and capacity and capabilities. For example Khader has no idea about the working of hospitals but just to show his power he visited a hospital past midnight.and pulled people up. Before taking any such step he should study about the facilities available to the patients and the doctors, whether they need to be upgraded for the benefit of patients. Anywhere the work culture and accountability can be improved by providing the basic necessities and a decent pay package to the concerned, and then only the politicians have a right to question the concerned.

He may ask Bill Gates to launch new Operating System 'Windows K'(ಕಿಟಕಿ ಕನ್ನಡ) in Kannada, as he does not know English.

Congi agents always ridicules Mangalore MP for not knowing English. Mangalore MP's scope is limited to Karnataka and Delhi, he can manage without English most of the time.

May I ask congi agents how this 65 year old minister will communicate with CEOs, Directors of MNC's ???
