Sullia: Six government school teachers suspended

Sullia, Jun 4: After paying surprise visit to the government high school at Aletty in the taluk on Monday June 3, the deputy director of public instructions (DDPI) of Dakshina Kannada district suspended six teachers and a second grade assistant of the high school for dereliction of duty.

There were numerous complaints of factionalism, dereliction of duty, irresponsibility, financial irregularities, influencing students to revolt against teachers, repeated and unauthorized absence, entrusting personal works to students among others, from the general public as well as parents of the students.

After conducting inquiry into the allegations, block education officer of the taluk, Malleswamy, had submitted a report to the zilla panchayat sometime back. He had found some of the allegations to be true, and had pointed out that the result of the high school was plummeting because of differences between the teachers. He also found that the teachers, who ganged up against each other, fought in the presence of children, took leave at will, altered attendance register, and misused money after collecting money from students under the pretext of different occasions. Although Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat session had decided in March this year to take disciplinary action against the erring teachers, the move was withheld in view of the final examination.

The in-charge headmistress, Sandhya, was found to be absent during the surprise visit by the deputy director, Moses Jayashekhar. She had, without getting permission, handed over charge of the school to teacher, Chandrashekhar. But Chandrashekhar was also absent from the school. The DDPI suspended in-charge headmistress, K Sandhya, teachers, K S Chandrashekhar, V Subrahmanya, K Hariprasad, K Chandramathi, physical education teacher, N Shivakumar, and second grade assistant, Yogeesh Bharath. The DDPI also found that only five students were admitted into the eighth standard of the high school this year.

The DDPI has appointed resource officer of block resource centre, Dr Sundar Kenaje, as the in-charge headmaster of the school, and deputed three teachers from other schools. More teachers are expected to be posted within a couple of days. He has requested the parents to send their schools to this school, as the department is making arrangements to improve the quality of education and environment at this high school.
