Mangalore, Jun 7: In yet another case of robbery, that too at a busy area in the city, a man hailing from Delhi was looted of Rs 85,000 by a gang of conmen.

The incident occured at MG Road near PVS junction here on Friday June 7.

Mohammed Afzal, said to be son of an MLA from Delhi, working on a central project at NIT-K on contract, had parked his car near PVS. Another person who was with him got out of the car and went inside a building, while Afzal waited in the car.

While he was waiting for the person to return, a stranger approached Afzal and told him that a currency note had fallen near the car. Afzal got out of the car and began searching for the note, which was indeed lying nearby.

While Afzal's attention was diverted by the currency note planted by the stranger, another man, an accomplice, opened the car door from the other side and stealthily picked up Afzal's briefcase before vanishing into the evening crowd around. The other man also had disappeared by then.

It was after he got back into the car that Afzal realized that his briefcase was missing. The briefcase contained Rs 60,000 in cash and documents, passport, credit/debit cards etc.

A while later, Afzal received an SMS from his bank stating that Rs 25,000 had been debited from his account. Hence, the robbers altogether looted him of Rs 85,000.

Based on Afzal's complaint, Kadri police have registered a case and investigations are on.

The incident comes just a day after two daylight robberies were reported in the city on Thursday June 6, wherein an elderly man and a lady teacher were robbed of their gold in separate incidents. The robbers, in these cases, had posed as police. A similar robbery was reported the same evening in Udupi also.

Just yesterday I was told by one of our male friend, he was buying some thing from Kankanady at that time a man, lady and kid came to him and asked him if he knew hindi for which he said no, and then they pleaded to him saying they have no money to go to their home town and stuck so if he could help them with a little money, he felt sorry for the kids and gave him rs 200/- as he went further on he saw this same couple with his gang, so this was all a big lie and this is a gang that is looting people. So pls be very careful.

This is a psychological game to which anyone, even any smart man can get conned, it is carried out with clockwork precision and is over in moments!! It would be abnormal for a normal human to not react and respond to such simple calls of money/wallet/ornament etc. dropped down or else we would be like programmed robots!!! How many times have not people found out their dropped items after having been alerted by good Samaritans, I have?

Only thing is people's attention should be "focused" on their possessions especially if they are carrying large amounts of cash or other valuable items until they reach their safe destination as these conmen mark only those that they are pretty sure would be carrying a bountiful booty!!

It is not said anywhere that the cash is withdrawn from the ATM.This requires pin code.If this is found along with the documents it is a bonus to the culprits.Credit/debit cards can be used at any outlets for any purchases etc without pin code.mere signature is sufficient. The mode of transaction is a suspense.

Mangalore police indeed has a challenge ahead as such cases are gradually common happening in Mangalore. CCTV Camera in crowed places, sensitive places and if possible Mangalore city roads could be brought under radar. Mangalore City needs more police personnel to man 24x7 as city expands and BAVAKA's greater Mangalore is materialized. But some are how such incidents makes us to give curses to victim rather than culprits.

I can only presume that the withdrawal was not through an ATM but a Debit transaction at any shop, supermarket, etc. Most of these shops have CCTV cameras and hopefully if they are working then culprits could be nabbed. It is ideal that banks now move to the cards which has the chip technology as that makes it mandatory for PIN numbers even at the outlets and not just at ATM's.

It is very difficult to notice their tricks. People will not be thinking the robbery all the time.

Their tricks has no limitation. Few robbers get into BMTC bus with a beautiful girl. She will be standing near the door of crowded bus and divert the attention of people standing nearby. And the thieves do their job now...

FIXING THE BLAME ON POLICE-WOMEN, AS PROVED RECENTLY IN THE HARRASEMENT CASE.
