The free allowance for jewellery is given in Appendix 'D' of the baggage Rules. Which states:
Indian passenger who has been residing abroad for over one year.
    (i) Jewellery upto an aggregate value of Rs. 50,000 by a gentleman passenger, or

(ii) Upto aggregate value of Rs. 1,00,000 by a lady passenger.

Well, I do not appreciate Sanaulla's act. But the same officer who caught him should prove his honesty by catching a minister looting 5 crores. That will be his achievement.!!!!

The duty on gold is 8%. At the current rate of INR 27,500 per 10gm, import duty for 200 gms of gold works out to be INR 44,000/AED 3,000. Still a reasonable amount rather 9% compared to the 200g gold price of AED 33,000. The weblink appears to be outdated as it still shows the import of jewellery free of duty as INR 10, 000 for male, INR 50,000 for female, whereas this has been revised to INR 100,000

Mr. Ted, nothing from your specified website will match with what you face when go through the airport.

One of my friend brought gold worth 1 lakh and paid in customs duty around 45000 rupees. so it means custom duty for one gram of gold is around 1100 rs. While the gold rate per gram is 2600rs.
    is this peanut??!!

And this happened in mumbai airport, his gold was in airport custody and it was released after he paid the duty charge of 45000. But the officials there did not seize the gold nor they called him smuggler.

What the mangalore officials are trying to be, a superman? Why not have some training from Mumbai Officials.

Even if one d the gold, I heard that they going to charge us whatever they please. Is there anything we can do from our side to prove that that they can charge only Rs.255 per 10 gram (for tola bars).

My dear NRE friends I have written many times why we should take excess gold etc but human avarice is so much that we are tempted to do it. So I suggest that take what ever you want, tell the custom officer, agree on a bribe and get lost from there. Now some people will start if every one does like that how will govt earn, this is no time for Ghandism be smart. Its like me driving on a street saying speed limit 80 K.M. where there are no Speed Monitor's, I am the only one left behind all the other's are having a hot meal at home. Mind you I did the same for my 42" 3D, though I am not proud.

The poor guy must have thought of saving some money so did not .The gold. I am sure he brought those chains for his family members, otherwise he would have brought gold bars. If he had hid it, he would not have paid full duty but less than what he had to pay and that money would have surely gone to the pocket of the officer on duty. If they brand these Gulf-returnees as smugglers, what do we have to call those officers at the Customs, who without an iota of guilty feelings and shyness bargain for their share from the travelers?
Whenever I had to pay towards the custom duty, I never received receipt for the amount I paid, which was always pocketed by the officers. If the duty amount does not go to the government exchequer, what is the point in declaring our things and grease the palms of corrupt customer officers?

Sanaulla is legally allowed to bring up to Rs 50,000 worth of gold duty free and , up to 10 Kg of gold by paying a duty @ Rs.250 per 10 gram.

Sanaulla had to pay the duty for Rs 450,000(177gm) worth of gold which amounts to Rs 4,430 = AED 285 (which is peanuts for someone who can afford 5 lac gold)

Why did Sanaulla have to hide gold chains under his shirt ? He may be ignorant and innocent but,

The customs officials may have assumed that he is a professional smuggler and nabbed him for pretending like one.

Last week I arrived from Dubai to Mangalore., I bought Gold necklace worth 62 gms, I showed to Custom officer and he told me I have to pay custom duty at the rate of 35percent,then one loader came to me and told me he will talk to custom officer to reduce custom., then they asked me to pay RS 5,000.Custom officers and loaders are in one gang, they trap the Passenger who bring valuable items and show them for paying custom, and they loot the customers., thanks to DW readers who give us proper information about the custom duty.

Idiot act by Mangalore Airport officials. Why they put NRE passenger behind the bars? Did he steal or do crime anything? 200grams gold is common.. He should be released and Customs officer should be punished. They are just telling 12 chains but it may 6 pairs of chains.
2-3 months before i went to India, i was carrying a Music System which was about 15000Rs value, he asked me for 3000Rs Lancha, as i was not carrying receipt for the same- i couldn't fight with him. If you are not going to bribe, then he threatened me to open&check all my other baggage as well. Finally, i paid 1700Rs as bribe...
I laughed at myself when giving bribe because-that arrogant & shameless Custom officer was standing in front of a board which was reading -Do not give bribe, if anybody asking for bribe inform us at .....!!
I think Customs Officer name derived from the Kannada word -Kashtada Officer....!!

200 grams of gold he brought with his hard earned money to his mother & sisters is nothing. Custom authorities can collect the tax due from him let him go to meet his family. It is human nature to evade paying tax etc. Even the spouse of our last president had a case registered for evading tax. It is not a very big crime. Those who loot state's property go scot-free but a common man gets arrested for silly mistake.
