Mangalore, Jun 11: As per a notification issued by Karnataka government, revenue officials have been barred from using red beacons atop their vehicles like their police department counterparts. While the other officials are still hesitant to follow this order and get deprived of this privilege-cum-status symbol, Dakshina Kannada (DK) district deputy commissioner (DC) N Prakash, has emerged as a model for others by removing the red light atop his vehicle on Monday June 10.

The government had withdrawn all its earlier orders relating to the display of red beacons by the official vehicles of dignitaries and certain government officials, and issued a fresh notification in their place. This was done to fall in line with the verdict delivered by the Supreme Court in a recent case in this connection. As per the new guidelines, VIP red top lights can be fitted on the vehicles of only a handful of dignitaries and officials.

Those who will continue to enjoy this privilege include Governor, chief minister, ministers, assembly speaker, chairperson of the legislative council, chief justice of the high court and judges of the high court.

Those heading various corporations, boards, authorities etc., who enjoy a status equal to that of ministers, as well as those heading tribunals and commissions and enjoying the status of the high court judges, have been barred from using the red lights on their vehicles henceforth. Likewise, none of the other government servants, as well as revenue and police department officials, have been authorized to make use of these red lights.

In a release, under secretary in the department of transport, K Beeresh, said that the police escort vehicles looking after security of dignitaries should sport blue lights under section 108(3) of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 atop their vehicles.

its a good move by the Supreme Court and the state government towards propagating equality, but depriving IAS & IPS the beacon light is highly questionable as for as their functional responsibilities are concerned, especially the police......

Hats off Mr.DC ,This is really a good idea, they too will start getting bored waiting under red lights :)
And one more thing in india ,if we give them lamborghini or willys jeep these government employees don't know how to use these vehicles!!!I have seen so many rusted out brown vehicles behind these government offices and its one more place were some kind of survey is required,as they simply bring fancy and costly items to office use it for some days and forget, which means indirectly wasting our money .

The DC is more than a hero. He is a highly qualified individual who is in his non political post because of his education (IAS) and abilities. He deserves high respect from all.

Congrats Mr DC for leading the way. Why not with the help of Daiji and the Mangalore newspapers (English & Vernacular) can we not have the numbers of the vehicles of those dignitaries who are authorised to use the Red beacon on their OFFICIAL CARS in DK.

Why people highlight a small red lamp when a civil servant uses 30 lakh worth car to go around. Guys focus on the wastage of public money and not on Rs.300 worth beacon! Can anyone justify the need of a 30 lakh vehicle?

I think DC should be given the previlage for Red beacon car. They are IAS holders, educated ones. There should be cut from the Ministers who are just doing nothing but roaming around with the red beacon and with huge security.

Thank God it’s a Supreme Court order else our people would have started blaming each other Political Parties with various comments. By the way this “Red Light or Beacon” is not a good sign at all. Then which colour light we follow? Green means not acceptable to BJP and Shiv Sena, Saffron is allergitic to Congress.
