Mangalore, Jun 19: Home minister K J George on Wednesday June 19 visited the Bishop's House to seek blessings and held discussions with members of the community.

Discussing the attacks on churches in 2008, K J George said that he had seen the initial report which was pro-Christians, but the later report (Somasekhar Commission) had been against the community. "I will discuss the matter at the ministry level and arrive at an appropriate decision," he assured.

On the issue of moral policing in the district, he said it is the complete responsibility of the police to curb the menace and handle anti-social elements. "The police should take strict action in this regard. No one has the right to take law into their hands. We will put an end to moral policing," he said.

On the deluge in Uttarakhand in the north India where thousands of people including former minister Shobha Karandlaje have been trapped, he said tha he is constant touch with the authorities and the Uttarakhand chief minister, and protection will be provided to all Kannadigas stranded there.

Referring to CM Siddaramaiah's recent statement that he had appointed him as home minister to win the confidence of the minorities, K J George said that he was home minister not just for minorties but for people of all sections and communities.

Vicar general of Mangalore diocese Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu felicitated the minister. On this occasion he also submitted a memorandum to the home minister. In the memorandum the Vicar General requested the minister to take necessary measures to restore confidence among people by maintaining law and order in the district and at the state level. He also requested the minister to withdraw the pending cases filed against the Christians during the time of church attacks in 2008. Besides this he said that the Chairmanship of State Minority Commission should be given on rotation basis to the communities constituting the commission. The Christian Minority Development fund should be raised to Rs. 200 crores was the other request. Though the Christians don’t look for special status they should be given equal opportunities as given to others.

J R Lobo, MLA of Mangalore South Constituency said that K JGeorge after assuming change as home minister has already initiated steps to strengthen Law and Order situation of the State and he appreciated him for the same.

In reply, the home minister said that though he comes from a Minority Consituency he will work for the welfare and security of all the people in the state. Also he assured that he would try to see that Christians also get equal opportunities as others. Further he said J R Lobo is a man for development and vision. In case of any need if an appeal is made to him, he in consultation with him would try to solve the problems. The selfless service rendered by the priests and sisters was appreciated by the home minister.

Fr Valerian D’Souza, parish priest of Milagres Church invoked God’s blessing on the home minister. Fr Onil D’Souza, director of CODP compered the programme. Fr John Vas, the procurator of Bishop's House proposed the vote of thanks. Ivan D’Souza, Congress leader, M P Noronha, convener, diocesan political wing, Marcel Monteiro, PRO of the diocese and others were present.

MLA J R Lobo, corporator Naveen D'Souza, Ibrahim Kodijal and others were present.

    Hi ESKEY,
    Good and healthy debate.
This is how we can overcome difference of opinions.
See, this cast divisions are there in every religions, including in mine also.
After all we are humans you see!
But, we should strive to build civil society!

In civilized world, no innocent should be harmed!
Viz. For Indira Gandhi was killed, give harsh punishment to killers but killing innocent Sikhs, just because killer was a Sikh is highly condemnable!
In Godhra, give harshest punishment to train burners, track them from anywhere but not harm innocent Muslims.
In Kashmir, Pandits were driven out, just because they are Hindus? highly condemnable!
In Orissa, Swami was killed by Maoists, (Maoists consists of all religions) Rightly killers should have been caught and given harsh punishment!
But mob killed so many innocent Christians in revenge for swami's killing!
Civil society should fight against such grave violence in society, that's all.
In Politics, we should have defended good one and criticized bad ones. But sadly it happens party wise or religion wise. Hope some day it will change. HOPE IS LIFE! HAVE A NICE TIME!

    Hi Valerian,
First and foremost, in order to build a Civil Society there should be some common principles. Mutual Trust, tolerance and co-existence is the key. You as an individual have ten points and I have ten points of mine. If at least one point between us does not match then there is no chance for co-existence. But thankfully, this is not the case. We have at least 3 points (for instance) common among us. That should be the starting point to build a civil society. For the time being cooperate with each other on those 3 points. Build mutual trust then naturally the tolerance will increase and later co-existence becomes easier. After that, more points will be agreed upon.
I agree with you that no innocent person should be punished or victimized. Politics has become dirty in our country. There is no sincerity among politicians. In the civil society first thing what should be stopped is to ‘take side of any political party’ blindly. Not to fight amongst us to support politicians. It is simply not worth.
I hope ‘someday’ the things will change although I am not hopeful of seeing it in my lifetime (due to my age). Long way to go!!!

    Hi Valerian,
Thanks for your comments. Yes, we have difference of opinion in some things (not many, I suppose) and I am sure that we are having a healthy debate on matters. My objective (in responding to your earlier comment) is to debate in a healthy manner and I am glad that with you and my esteemed friends like Flavian, Simple, et al., our views are expressed, exchanged and understood properly in this forum.
I agree with you 100% that Christian community is aggrieved and justice is not done (your use of word ‘Denied’ amounts to accusation on some party, which is speculative and can be avoided at this stage)
I fully agree that fair investigation has (had) to be carried out. In my opinion, there is no need of second commission. If the person heading the 1st commission is made answerable to the question everybody is asking ‘why there is discrepancy in the interim and final reports’ then truth will come out whether he was forced by someone in power to hide something.
On the ‘hypothetical’ temple attack issue, probably I would feel the same thing the Christian community is feeling today – ‘aggrieved’.
But going by the track record of our politicians, I do not foresee any majority community HM (from party other than BJP perhaps) going to that attacked temple with a genuine interest to console majority community. Today’s politicians are only interested in minority community VOTES Sir, they know very well that the Majority community is DIVIDED along caste lines and there is no interest left in them. A Brahmin minister may not go to backward community temple and a Kuruba minister may not be interested in a GSB temple, you understand what I mean.

Last time 3 MLA's went to Dharmasthala to discuss matter concerning governance, we appreciated the same!

    Hi Valerian,
It is true that we appreciated the visit of 3 MLA's (Ministers) to Dharmasthala. As far as I recall, they did not issue a statement which is communally sensitive. Khader talked about improving the rural health care, Ramanath Rai discussed ecological development and Sorake spoke about development of coastal district. There is nothing to be suspicious about their intent.
Our Home Minister visited Church, (nothing wrong in it) and discussed (?) governance (it is still OK if he talks about overall improvement of Law and Order, Punish the guilty etc.)
But to tell you how he became communal - A Christian minister going to Bishop's house and issue a statement that He is not happy with Somashekar report and he will reopen the investigation on church attack. That is not the right place and time to do it.
As a home minister he has the right to re-open the case, he need not ask anybody, he need not tell anybody, he is not even required to stand on top of a mountain and shout (as suggested by Mr. Prem) But why it should be from Bishop's house?
You may discuss anything with Rev. Bishop, regarding personal or governance there is no problem. Why make this visit a political tool?
If a minister from majority community does something similar I object to it. I am of the opinion that a person (not in the capacity as a minister) whether Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh or Jain visits his place of worship it should not become a news item at all. Let him go wherever he pleases. Keep the visits personal and do not bring politics in to it.
Dear Valerian, there is no hatred in the mind. Mind is sometimes suspicious of the motive. That's all

I like & appreciate your comments, it is o.k. many time we differ in many things. But you are frank in your way and truthful in your perspective.
See, H.M. visited Church, which is aggrieved party to whom justice was denied. Only consolation was cases filed on defenders were withdrawn by Shri. DVS.
Shri. Shettar was not controversial, but not had much control over fascist splinter groups!
So, if H.M. is assuring justice for aggrieved party, it need not be seen as something wrong!
Would you feel, for God's sake, never such thing should happen, if a temple was attacked, no justice was given, later some H.M. goes to temple and gives similar assurance? Anyway, have a nice time!

BJP made same mistake what MR KG George did.Visiting Church or place of worship is personal right/liberty(he visited BISHOP HOUSE)If that visit is official then he must visit other community HQs.Being a Home Minister, any community can make representation with HM but if that visit is private or s 'SIMBLY'to take blessing it is purely non govt function which should be kept as private. If we take task of BJP ministers for visiting temple for showbiz,we should disagree with Mr George.

Coming to atrocities against minorities, disfigure of place of worships of minorities, cases against innocents and Commission Report which should be reviewed on priority basis.Previous Govt withdrawn the cases against victims who were victimized by police department and still minister not aware of the status of the cases!

I think George has become Home minister due to him being a loyal congressman. I strongly feel he has been appointed as Home minister on the same lines as the recent reshuffle at the centre, where a cabinet minister (Sis ram Ola) who is 85 years has been appointed as minister.

Is this some kind of plan of the congress prime ministerial candidate of 2014? He wants to keep the elders happy by giving them ministership and appointed youngsters as party office bearers?

Moral policing should be a private affair.I think the only people who have the right to tell us what to do are the ones who genuinely love us .Its not for some local goons to take care of. I think we need to have a more liberal and tolerate society which is more concerned with their own affairs and working towards their own success rather than looking around for poor women asking them to dress modestly or aiming at young lovers sharing some of their private moments. The answer is that moral policing does not help our nation in anyway!!!!! Yes, value education with reference to self dignity , manners , morals can help.
