Mangalore: Toddler falls off second floor of hospital, dies

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jun 21: In a tragic incident, a toddler died after falling off the second floor of Colaco hospital in the city here on Friday June 21.

The deceased has been identified as Marwa (2), daughter of Mukhtar from Kannur, Kerala.

The family had come to the city as Marwa's mother had to be admitted for delivery of her third child. She gave birth to boy a couple of days ago.

The incident took place on June 21 at around 5 pm when Marwa was playing with her sister near the window of the hospital room. The window, without any protective grill, slid open when she pushed it, resulting in her fall.

A critically injured Marwa was rushed to KMC hospital, where she breathed her last.

Noor Jahan, mother of the child, hails from Puttur. After marrying her, Mukhtar, residing in Adyar-Kannur, had started working as an auto rickshaw driver in Mangalore. Marwa was one among the twin girls born to the couple in Noor Jahan’s first delivery.

Mukhtar has accused the hospital authorities of negligence. He said the fact that the windows of the hospital do not have grills, and that beds have been laid parallel to the windows in close proximity had caused the death of his daughter.

Kadri police have registered a case.

its a matter of hospital mismanagement.and also wht were the care takers of the child doing?they are also equally guilty. dont blame khader for this.i agree health ministry should have checked all the safety features before giving licence to the hospital. suggestion-make it mandatory for all health providers like hospital and hotels to have their licences renewed every year and get NOC from fire and safety depts.

A tragic incident, children and their movements should be watched regularly. The hospital should take care of it's safety systems like window openings with some kind of locking systems.

Jaya what Kader has to do here. It is the duty of the Hospital to ensure the safety of every room.

Also it is also the responsibility of the partients/their family members to make sure, the room they are staying is safe. If not bring to the management and change the room. After all, the patient is not staying free. When the infant child was playing, what are the parents/elders doing.

Few months back, I had one incident, opposite to Roopa Hotel. I was taking a walk morning afternoon time, behind KMC Hampankatta towards Jyothi and exactly opposite side of Roopa Hotel, I could see a child just coming out from one of the mall. It seems to me, the mother is least bothered, and she was busy talking to others. I just ran and caught the child. Same time police jeep was coming from Jyothi to Hampankatta and the police personnel helped us too. Mother was unaware what's happening and after few minutes she noticed and then one girl from their group came and took the boy. So here in this case, whose mistake. If the parents cannot manage, do not give birth to the child. I am little blunt here but this is what I had noticed in many cases.

Extremely tragic and shocking. Safety aspects have to be analysed and given due importance. Even when such lapses are pointed out most ignore it thinking it will not happen to them.

SAFETY IS GIVEN THE LAST PRIORITY.
ANYTHING ABOVE MAN HEIGHT IS TO BE PROTECTED BY SUFFICIENT GUARD RAILS.
LIFE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE CAN NOT RECLAIM IT OR RECREATE IT.
1.1 METRE GUARD RAIL WITHOUT INTERMEDIATE CLIMBABLE STEPS CAN SAVE UNSUSPECTING BABIES FROM SUCH FALLS.
