Bangalore, Jun 22:
With owners of roadside grocery shops, tea shops, petrol bunks and petty shops openly selling Indian made liquor (IML) illegally at higher prices following denial of permission to open liquor shops in small towns and hoblis, Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya feels the problem can be tackled by granting permission for opening more liquor shops in small towns and rural areas.

''This is the only viable solution to check the illegal sale and production of spurious liquor,”  he said speaking to reporters in Bangalore on Saturday.

Opening more liquor shops in small towns and rural areas would help in increasing the excise revenue and also checking the manufacture and sale of spurious liquor, which is harmful to the people, he said.

The minister, however, clarified that he was voicing his ''personal opinion” and made it clear that he would abide by the Government’s decision.

Countrywide Prohibition Best Option

Coming from the rural background and dalit community, Anjaneya said he was aware of the problems of the rural areas and felt the poorer and labour class people were drinking liquor after a hard day’s labour as they did not have any other entertainment in the rural areas. ''These are the hard realities, which cannot be denied,” he said.

He felt opening of more shops would help to check illegal sale of liquor or illicit liquor in tea-shops, petrol pumps and grocery shops at higher prices

The minister felt prohibition of alcohol in the state would not be successful unless in it was done countrywide.

Prohibition in one state would lead to illegal movement of liquor from other states.

In the interest of health of people, he was in favour of country-wide prohibition as had been advocated by Mahatma Gandhiji, the minister said.

Survey of SC/ST Land Holding

The Congress Government has proposed to conduct a survey small land holding households belonging to Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes in the State to provide irrigation facility to lands through sanctioning of borewells under the Ganga Kalyana scheme.

The minister said only a few SC/ST families benefited under various schemes so far.

A survey would be conducted to provide benefits to all SC/ST land holding households. The department would sanction borewells, IP sets and power connections to IP sets at a time.

Applicants need not run from pillar to post in the State Secretariat seeking sanctioning letters from authorities, he said.

Electricity connection was not given to 31,000 IP sets sanctioned under the Ganga Kalyana scheme.

The department has decided to give electricity to these pumpsets in the next one year, he said.

Funds Sanctioned to Maths Won’t Be Blocked

The Congress Government, which was critical of the release of funds to maths, has decided not to block funds sanctioned to various maths by the previous BJP Government.

Anjaneya said the BJP government had sanctioned funds for several maths during its rule. Now, some temples and maths have received a portion of sanctioned funds.

The Congress government has decided to release full amount of funds sanctioned by the previous BJP government, he said.

Asked whether any math has submitted a proposal seeking allocation of funds in the budget, the Minister said he had not received any such proposal.

In fact, no math had sought money from the government. The BJP government on its own sanctioned funds to maths, the minister claimed.

Pros and Cons of any Law should have been studied by Government Authorities before the implementation of the same but not after. Country like Saudi is not immune to Liquor Mafia, then Indian is free for all Country, our people love and believe in illegal business only. This Minister’s name is “Anjaneya” means he should have been far away from all misdeeds but contrarily he himself promoting the Liquor mafia in Karnataka. Same think will happens to “Gutkha” ban too, illegal business will increase with higher rate and then Government will think over to legalize the business!!! Now slowly people of Karnataka will realize the hidden motives of power struggle in State like Karnataka

Minister is telling the truth. People are selling illegally manufactured low quality liquor even at homes for high price in villages. it was a wrong decision to ban cheap liquor. Government should have gone for total ban so that ban could have implemented successfully. Police can catch not only the seller but the drunkard also.

Shame on Govt encouraging liquor consumption just for revenue reasons even though impact on society is much more severe than Gutka .
Let such Govts try legalizing prostitution which might not only generate revenue but also reduce rape incidents.

Minister your effort is really appreciated, you are not only helping Malya but also he can restart his bankrupt Kingfisher Airlines and calender girls. It is really an entertainment for labourers after a hard day of work, drinking alchohal till their nose falling into gutters is a really a entertainment. Minister has to look into many areas of his portfolio which benefits to the nation and state instead of Alcohol.

    BROTHER ROSARIO,
WELL SAID AND I SECOND IT.
ANYTHING ABOUT LIQUOR MUST NOT BE HIGHLIGHTED BY POLITICIANS OR PROMINENT PERSONS.
STATEMENT LIKE THIS IS NOT IN THE FAVOUR OF ANY SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM.
MAN ALWAYS GOES AFTER SCARCE THINGS.
IF YOU WANT TO SUPPLY REGULATED ALCOHOL TO VILLAGES DO IT WITHOUT NOISE AND WITH RESPONSIBILITY.
    NO NEED OF ANY HYPE.
HOWEVER ALLOW A SIZABLE AMOUNT FROM YOUR BUDJET TO EDUCATE ALCOHOLICS AGAINST PERILS OF EXCESS CONSUMPTION THAT OFTEN DESTROY FAMILIES WHICH IS VERY PAINFUL.

True Jossey sir, we should start emulating Goa. Our popular government should open liquor shops like starbucks or costa coffee in every corner. Next to it beef fry stalls can also be started. We should see the brighter side of business. With the money earned from liquor, Petrol & Diesel can be subsidized.

By giving more opportunity for the Liquor, the population can increase because after drinking, human nature loose his mental balance and human productivity will increase. Secondly... there is possibility of decreasing in population because many deaths by drinking the Alcohol ... so this is the best idea of the higher authority to give more importance. Even though by providing more liquor to the people ,there will be more faith on the hight authority, so easily can win trust of the people...Anyway... let's hope and keep on watching the developments and benefits for our people.

Start selling liquor in schools and ration shops. I don't understand why government is promoting liquor. Instead of liquor, improve the roads, infrastructure, make government offices people friendly and try to bring down prices and reduce load shedding.

Banning liquor is just out of question. Yes, you can apply some rules, restrictions & laws. 12yrs
before I was an alchoholic. I know how it works. A person who want to have a drink will search heaven and earth for it. Increasing price also makes double damage to one's financial position. Only option is by educating people through NGO's or AAA Meetings.
