Now buy wine through vegetable vendors in Karnataka

Now buy wine through vegetable vendors in Karnataka

V S Karnic

Bangalore, Jun 23 (IANS): Karnataka, which grows over 330,000 tonnes of grapes and produces around 3.5 million litres of wine annually, is promoting the drink in a unique way. Soon wine will be made available at select fruit and vegetable outlets in Bangalore.

"We are going to start selling wines at five selected HOPCOMS (Horticultural Producers' Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society) stalls in Bangalore within a month," Karnataka Wine Board managing director Mahantesh Murgod told IANS.

The Board has identified HOPCOMS stalls in upscale Indiranagar and Cox Town mixed locality in east Bangalore, Electronic City which houses a number of IT firms, and Whitefield, where massive commercial and residential complexes continue to sprout. These two areas are also in the east.

Cox Town is just five kilometres from the city centre and Indiranagar is around 10 km away, while both Electronic City and Whitefield are about 20 km away.

The Wine Board wanted wine boutiques to be set up in 15 HOPCOMS stalls but the Society has permitted them in just five. The Wine Board will help in setting up refrigeration and other facilities needed to keep wine in the right condition.

Though wine consumption in India is low as compared to many countries, it is estimated to be growing at a rate of 25 to 30 percent a year, according to Karnataka State Beverages Corporation Ltd (KSBCL). The Corporation procures and sells liquor, beer and wine, both domestic and foreign, to retailers in the state.

To begin with, the HOPCOMS stalls will sell only wines produced in Karnataka.

"Most probably, we will sell wines of Karnataka only. In future, if this project clicks, we will look at other wines also," Murgod said. The state has 17 wineries.

The Wine Board was set up in 2007 as part of the plan to promote wine consumption to help the state's large number of grape growers.

The state government also came out with a Wine Policy in 2007 simplifying excise rules, lowering licence fees for setting up wineries, allowing wineries to sell their produce at the premises as part of 'wine tourism', establishing wine taverns and treating wineries as a horticulture and food processing industry.

The Wine Board, which has been organizing Wine Festivals in Bangalore, plans to also hold these at the district level, Murgod said. The state has 30 districts.

"This year we are planning to hold wine festivals in Belgaum (in the north), Mangalore (on the west coast) and Mysore (in the south)," he said.

The Board also plans an International Wine festival in Bangalore though the dates are yet to be decided.

Murgod said other promotional activities include wine tasting and wine selling programmes in most popular clubs of Bangalore.

Karnataka is India's second largest producer of grapes after Maharashtra, with the growing districts being Bangalore urban, Bangalore rural and Kolar in the southern part of the state and Bijapur, Bagalkot, Belgaum, Koppal and Gulbarga in the north.

The grapes from the northern districts are of high quality and exported to Europe and West Asia, as also Russia, according to KSBCL.

HOPCOMS ( fair price vegetable and fruit shop by the Govt. in Mangalore ) was started so that the public will not be cheated on prices of vegetables and fruits. But on the contrary these outlets are costlier than the regular market prices. The public is being cheated in Mangalore. These outlets do not even have a board stating the days price. The Lokayukta should investigate into this matter.

Thinking of settle down permanently in developed state Gujarat. Karnataka..is going worse to worst from congress rule. Government itself do not know exactly what they are actually doing. To fulfill quantam of rice/milk ..they introduce 'cheap liquor/wines' to earn revenue. Law and Order already crippled. Wild animals entered city killed villagers. Leopard taking shelter in Bedroom in 'Tumkur'..People locked from outside. Dancing Bar/Video Parlours closed..death of owner after hearing the news...by which chances of 'rape' cases may increase. Fare of Transport system increased. Sidduji..having 'Aarlu-Marlu'..due to overage.. don't know what actually he his speaking. To me it looks like Karnataka will become worst than somalia. People of Karnataka in future will work as pirates..stealing material and money from neighbouring states vessels. Need immediate changes either Mid-Poll at earliest as possible. 'Gora Apradh' by introducing wines in Vegetable Markets. Women's now have there quota there itself.

Vineyards and winery in the United States have a history of nearly 200 years or more when they not only brought different breed of grape seeds from all over Europe, specially from Spain, Italy and Germany, but also successfully experimented the cross-cultural polynation in order to produce the best wines in America.

Texas, inspite of the hot and humid climate is the fifth largest Wine producing state in the U.S.A. Texas has more than 300 vineyards covering more than fivethousand acres of land producing more than 50 varieties of grapes in order to produce some of the best quality wines competing California and few other States.

There are some fine Colleges and Universities in America that are highly privileged and facilitated to research on variety of vineyards. Side by side, producing wines and bottling them and labeling them for domestic and/or export sale requires special licensing from the Government with many rigid standards and conditions.

Americans as well as Europeans are good Wine drinkers because they eat lot of good meat and therefore Wine is a "must" for them on the table to enjoy their rich diet. Usage of wine along with their meal reflects upon a good quality of life, and Americans value their wine tradition with pride because that tradition has been carried by their ancestors as and when they migrated to the West from Europe centuries ago.

Vineyards require lot of consistent water supply. Reliable information reveals that each root in the vineyard takes several gallons of water each day. Like many other plantations, Vineyards also develop lot of deseases, including fungus and therefore each plant need be nurtured well in order to get good commercial cros. Many vineyards in America are licensed to produce their own wine and bottle them and label them under strict Government supervision. That's the story of wine from little that I know. Thank you
