Manipal gang-rape: Students observe bandh, demand stricter laws

Udupi, Jun 24: In reponse to the call given by ABVP, students from colleges across Udupi observed a bandh on Monday June 24 and assembled at Clock Tower here to voice their anger against the recent gang-rape case in Manipal.

The protestors, who gathered in hundreds, warned that if the culprits are not caught soon, the protest will be intensified and a district-level call for bandh will be given.

"The government only speaks of providing protection to women but it has not done anything in this regard. Because of this the accused, even if they are caught, are given bail easily and it takes years for justice to prevail. The law should hence be changed and made stringent," they said.

"Crimes against women should be tried in the fast track courts so that justice is done in the quickest time possible," they added.

"The laws should be made tighter so that culprits do not escape, otherwise, crimes like these will keep happening over and over again," they said.

One of the protestors alleged that a minister had interefered and had got the persons held by police released. He said that a dharna will be held outside the minister's house.

The protestors marched in procession to the SP office and handed over a memorandum urging quick action in the case.

A 22-year-old medical student of Manipal University was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by three men on the night of Thursday June 20. The culprits are still at large, while the girl is recuperating in hospital.

SP Dr Boralingaiah has called for a press meet later in the afternoon. Sources said that the names and sketches of the accused will be released to the media. It is learnt that the four persons who were taken for questioning earlier have been released.

Udupi/Manipal auto drivers are earlier known for looting, but now 'rapists!!'. I am not sure the rapists are auto drivers, but 100% sure about their rudeness and prowling behavior. Nothing great as these thugs are well supported by politicians and the government. The MLAs, MP are associated with their unions, for vote bank politics. So how can you expect any justice? Despite of pre-paid system for auto charges at Udupi railway station the rates set by RTO is unfair and not justifiable. How can you charge railway station to Laximindra nagar with is just about 5 KMs 55/- Rs? Definetly it will never cost more than minimum 20/- Rs if proper meter is used. Don’t you think it is broad light robbery in the name of pre-paid? RTO, government and auto drivers join and looting the public. But the big question is ….. who will bell the cat??

We must try to understand the root cause of rape because those who committed rape are also indians.According to NCRB 98% of rapes are committed by known person and 2% of rapes by unknown persons. In 98% rapes committed by known ones police used to arrest accused easily, the real test of police lies in these 2% cases. We should have to thank God for that those culprits did not kill victim because according to blindly drafted new anti-rape law there is 20 yrs jail term for gangrape and no rapist would like to take risk by leaving victim alive. In my opinion 4-5 yrs jail term is enough for non-violent rape/gangrape and there must be death penalty for rape cum murder or in case of causing death injuries. We must refrain from asking for stricter laws instead we should ask for tight security. We should have not to secrifice our cultural treasure on the name of secularism,we should make the study of Srimadbhagwad Gita,Ramayana and Manusmiriti cumpulsory for every student in school and colleges,95% of rapes will surely stop by this.

The culprits might be caught.. But what next?
Its 6 months for Nirbhaya incident and after that there have been numerous incidents of rape/gangrape/murder..
How many news headlines do we see that the culprits are punished severely?
How much followup news gets published on front page ?
    Just think.

    Need Justice immediately.
Its shocking that culprits still dare to such things..
They dont have any fear of the law.. Absolutely nothing.
On the contrary in todays time the good people fear the police that they will be victimised..
That needs to change. Today we do have a strong young population which is ready to create a revolution. Just hope justice is not delayed.

RSS and its sister organizations proved its output in many occasions. During many wars, droughts etc.. it was RSS who stood in front and helped the needy. The only sad thing is it wont get any publicity coz of the so called scularists

Due to media presence, Home Stay attackers were to an extent controlled. But this incidence shows a few may be at loose. Let the police do their job. All these adds shame to this region. Gods town spoiling its image as town of rape, drug, sex and goonda shows. Police need to restore its glory.

It seems police department has failed miserably. Four days now, police have in hands only the 'lead' to the culprits. When will police reach to the target. Public is too curious to bear the breaking news that all the rapists are caught.

I think Kerala Samajam in Mangalore should also hold a silent protest as a mark of solidarity and support to the rape victim and pressure the officials to nab the culprits.

The protests even if it turns violent is justified. What can a common man expect now from such an incompetent police or legal system? Will he /she have any faith? Where is the skinny bald headed smiling cop? We are on the 4th day and there is no lead in sight. The great leaders only blabber some words and bid time for the public to forget this issue.

More shocking news from Manipal Academy.Instead of condemning rape, they issued a circular that 4th year MBBS girl student was kidnapped by three auto drivers, but girl fought hard and jumped from auto and got her leg injured in the process..!! There was no information about rape, infact they just hid it from the record just to give good image about Manipal Academy all over the world.I think this is one more rape on girl and society.
Now,we understand why rapists have not been caught so far despite having very important clue. Either Manipal Group is putting lot of pressure on police not to catch or Manipal police are good for walking behind/infront of procession and rally..

Don't polarise and expect the worst, instead help the police to find the culprit and hang them thro' fast track court. They don't deserve this world.

It is clearly evident that somebody is trying to hide something, cover up something, hush up the matter. I just want to ask these so called cunning politicians and police officers, "IF THEIR DAUGHTERS OR MOTHERS OR WIVES WERE RAPED WOULD THEY BE SO LETHARGIC IN HANDLING THE CASE" Please don't do dirty vote bank politics for at least this issue.YOUR DAUGHTER OR WIFE MIGHT BE TARGETED NEXT TIME.

We are more concerned to know whether the culprits are caught. If not, students, the future citizens are the right persons to complete the task. Bundh, protest does not reap any results.Form squads and explore all the possibilities to nab the culprits.Only by violation, blood shed, loss of life results can be achieved.Let this be a historical event so that there will not be any repetition of such a heinous crime.
