Mangalore: Private bus employees to go on strike

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 2: Employees of private buses, both city and service, from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have decided to go on a day’s strike on Wednesday July 17, protesting against the failure of the bus owners to meet their demand for job security. They said that they will go ahead with the strike plan if bus owners fail to extend the said facility before that date.

At the meeting of Dakshina Kannada District Employees’ Association, the workers demanded for putting an end to the practice of exploitating and bringing pressure on drivers and conductors relating to daily collection, and the practice of the Regional Transport Authority of issuing permits to more than one bus on the same route with similar timings. Taking action against bus owners permitting unlicensed drivers and conductors, confirming services of bus employees by owners employing over ten workers, and following the guidelines provided by the labour department and laws on the subject, are the other demands of the bus employees.

Dakshina Kannada Karmika Parishat president, Ivan D’Souza, presided over the meeting. It was decided to hand over memorandums on the subject to the minister for labour, as well as deputy commissioners of both the districts.

General public are fed up with these bus drivers/conductors, who think that they can speed across the city, stop at any spot, block any road, cut lanes indiscriminately, abuse other general traffic with might is right mindset, while traffic police turn a blind eye towards their shenanigans! I join with other people who have said that let this strike be permanent and let govt buses come in.

its high time ivan travelled in a bus. may be he is having a cataract towards city/express busses.
    1. how many conductors wear uniform
    2. how many of them give tickets ( pocket money to themselves)
    3. some conductors are always smelling alcohol and that too with the smelly body brush against our body in the rush hours ( yak disgusting )
    4. how many conductors use the word by**rsi word at least once a day in full public glare
    5. how many busses stop in the bus stand in a side (most of them on the road)
    6. god knows whether these drivers are driving in a busy road or in a maidan.
    7. wait for over an hour at a stop (paje paduni) and then rush like an ambulance/ fire brigade ( worse than that)
its high time they get replaced with govt buses

I request govt. to kindly start at least 50% KSRTC buses at Mangalore-Udupi route to tackle this kind of situations in future. There are no window glasses, instead old tarpaulins are flying throughout the travel in rainy season, no display of bus No.inside the bus, rude nature of employees, refusal of passes for daily commuters etc.disgusted people in private buses.

Problems with our city public transportation
    1. Private bus drivers drive super aggressive on the road. They do not adhere to any of the rules. They flash lights.
    2. Most buses do not have working tail lights. Its hard to predict when they are going to stop
    3. Designated bus stops. I see buses stopping at any random point.
    4. Too Loud horns. Really hurt the ears.
    5. Super old buses. I am sure they are flaunting the pollution norms. Also its not comfortable for elderly people traveling.
    6. Absolutely no provision for handicap people to board the bus easily.
    7. Suspension of License of Drivers and cancellation of contract of Owners in case accidents caused by drivers negligence.

I feel City Corporation, RTO, Bus Owners and Citizens group should put their heads together and address these problems/solutions.

b/w Does anyone have any statistics/RTI info on number of accidents the private buses are part of over the years? Also number of prosecutions against the drivers and owners that lead to suspension of licence?

I think they are making a big mistake by going on strike. The last time when govt. solicited advice from public for introducing govt. buses there was so much support from public that the issue was swept under the carpet. The undisciplined drivers, conductors and making a big mistake. Surely Mr Ivan Dsouza has to set right the present behaviour and conditions before supporting their cause. Govt. should keep buses ready as standby so that if at all they strike, private buses will never return on the roads of Mangalore.

Bus related job is part time.
Their main job is to inform their communal bosses if girls are wearing jeans or mingling with boys from other communities.

All most all the Pvt. Buses are over crowded during the peak hours... & if the owner's claim that, the collection is less... that means, there is some thing wrong!!

Better to have Govt. as well as Pvt. Buses on the same route with different timings to get better service. Pvt. Buses to be restricted to some good company's only.

Dear Puneet, this will never happens in our Udupi and Mangalore region since most of our regional MLAs’, MPs’, Coportators, Mayors, Political Parties Regional Leaders etc are Owners of few Bus Permits or Road Permits or few of them having business link with those Bus Owners too. Secondly, we can opt for Government Buses instead of Private but soon we will experience many more Employees Strikes on monthly basis since most of these Employees Unions are affiliated to any one National Political Party and they start creating problem for ruling Party of that State.

Whoever goes on strike they will come back to duty within couple of days. No one will ready to lose their daily commission or looting apart from daily wages. The problem is Owner’s difficulty to run the business is not known by Drivers and other Employees, Employees struggle will be never understand by Owners but at the end Passengers pain will be never feel or understand by Owner as well as Employees too. Anyhow accident casualties and pollution might have reduced to some level at least for one day. But just few days back same Daiji Commentators whole heartedly supported the Bus Drivers and Conductors when BJP Youth Leader Suvarna man handled one such Driver for his mistake. It shows how biased people are……………

Dear MLAs of the twin district Udupi & DK,

We as general public voted you this time to make sure there will a change and this will effect immediately when you come to power. And one of the change we are expecting is to control these reckless driving of these express and city bus drivers. We dont know how you will do it. May be you can cancel the license of the driver and the bus operator, or you can complete abolish this private buses who do not value human life and instead put some good number of government buses. Or hand over the bus operation to one or two particular transport companies who can manage the operation in a professional way and they will be answerable to any casualties occurring from reckless driving. Right now there are hundreds of private buses owned by individuals without proper ethics. Corporatize the transport services in Udupi & DK and see the difference. Thats what we will call as a real change. Can you do this? or you want us to vote you people out next time???
Please answer us in this media and let the people know whats your choice! Jai Karnataka, Jai Hind!

The bus owners are justified in demanding more collection money as most conductors do not issue tickets for amount paid by passengers. If the entire collection had reached the owners, there was no need for the owners to increase ticket fares.

First of all these rude and ill mannered drivers and conductors should be thankful to the owners for giving them a job opportunity. Apart from their wages, the conductors switch off collection money and enjoy both conductors and drivers good food at classy restaurants at owners' capital.

It is better to replace all private bus routes, both local and intercity services with KSRTC. Let all these striking guys learn a lesson.

Dear Jessy,Please dont blame on these poor (means in all aspect eco, education, and social)drivers focussing into one angel,Yes for some extent we can say that they behave like crazy in some time but for why?? Before starting their day duty they are getting clear instruction from their owner how much he should collect on that particulor day! if he give any negative answer or explanation bus owner will not employ him,On other hand RTO's are issing road as well bus permitt recklesly, moreover we should know what kind of infrastructure we are having!!! Is it sufficient to meet our daily requirement?? Is it tally with our sky reaching population??
As i believe this move from drivers is good and if they get better solution 100% it will affect in reducing road accidents
