Udupi, Jul 2: After a vehicle carrying pilgrims from Mumbai overturned at a road bend near Pandurli in Sinnar in the outskirts of Nasik town in Maharashtra on Sunday June 30, three from the same family, who were natives of Yermal near Padubidri, lost their lives.

The deceased have been identified as Prashanth Suvarna (35), son of Rama Suvarna, residing near Vishnu Bhajana Mandir in Bada Yermal village, his wife, Reshma Prashanth Suvarna (27), and Prashanth’s seven month-old son, Sharan Suvarna.

The victims were settled in Mumbai. They lived in Fort area in the metro. On Sunday morning, a number of families living in the same neighbourhood had hired a Chevrolet Tavera vehicle to undertake pilgrimage of Shirdi. When the driver was negotiating a road bend near Pandurli on Gooty-Sinnar Road, the vehicle went out of his control. It spun thrice before coming to a stop. Because of the impact of the spinning vehicle, doors of the vehicle were forced open, and the above couple, which was tossed outside, died instantly. Their child, Sharan, breathed his last later in a local hospital.

Four other persons suffered grave injuries in this accident. They are Kusuma Salian (41), Janaki Mendon (62), Shreya Salian (41), and Sushma Mendon (25). Driver of the vehicle, Manohar Mendon, escaped with minor injuries.

Prashanth, working for a private television channel in Mumabi, had married Reshma from Kaup Padu village near here two years ago. He had visited his native place during May this year, and had paid obeisance at holy places like Dharmasthala, before returning to Mumbai.

The bodies of the deceased persons were brought to their native place in an ambulance on Monday evening. Hundreds of people had gathered there to pay their last respects and share the grief of the family members, who were found wailing inconsolably. As Prashanth’s mother is ill, she was informed about the calamity at the last minute, and doctors had to attend to her immediately after she was informed of the tragedy.

All the three bodies were consigned to flames in a single pyre on seashore thereafter.

With malice to none, I fail to understand why they had to undertake this journey in a Chevrolet car? I can understand if such a tragedy took place in some other place but in a metropolis like Bombay where there are fantastic multiple means of transport, people should be availing convenient mode of express trains like Geetanjali Express, Bombay - Nasik Manmad Express, Tapovan Express to name a few all which have halts at Nasik Road . Furthermore they being settled in the town (Fort) the least they could have done was to have consulted others. God knows if they did so or ??? May their souls rest in peace.

Very tragic and unfortunate incident hit this family! May their souls rest in eternal peace!!

If one may have noticed majority of these accidents occur when people are going to or returning back after paying obeisance to their favorite religious places/Gods, and in many cases entire families are wiped out!! Is it not ironical and a point to ponder as to why the God does not protect his devotees when they are going or returning after praying for their safety and overall well being?? Just last week an entire family of 11 people including father mother, two sons, their wives, daughter-son in law, and grandchildren wiped out in a car crash on Mumbai Goa highway!!

It is high time people do not get euphoric and think that some divine power to where they are headed will save them and take adequate safety for granted like not hiring unknown drivers/old vehicles, travelling at night, overspeeding, overloading the vehicle!!

It is really sad to see in India thousands of precious lives getting killed everyday in road accidents because of poor infrastructure that can be upgraded without much difficulty, lack of safety measurements like sign board, proper barricades and most importantly violating the safety regulations and undisciplined behaviour on roads.
I recall a incident I saw in Hampankatta signal in mangalore, a woman with her little child was stuck in the middle of the road when attempting to cross the road and all the vehicles were rushing by making her as a circle, but sadly not a single driver stopped and atleast had a courtesy to allow her to cross the road.
This shows our wreckless behaviour when driving.

You are absolutely right Mr. Khalid. Most of us, when we drive seem to be very insensitive of showing these little courtesies.

It's now become 'passion' amongst people to hire a 'private vehicle' to visit any place. Most of drivers are from private vehicles are not much experienced and no aware roads from other areas. By which occurance of 'accidents' are more..!! If wants to visit any far place..just use state buses..reason behind they aware of 'roads' well and capable to handle the same..as plying daily. Unncessarily using more of vehicles on roads it's create lot of 'jams'..give chance for accidents. Whatever happen is a sad fact indeed. Nobody escape from one's fate.
