Shimoga: Tragedy at Jog Falls - Three from Hubli drown

Shimoga, Aug 12: Three persons who went to Jog Falls to have a glimpse of its beauty, met a tragic end by accidentally falling and drowning on Sunday August 11.  

The deceased Dada Peer (31), Moinuddin Makhandar (37) and Aji Makhandar (25), residents of Hubli.  A group of six people had come to Jog Falls by their Tata Ace vehicle.

At around 6 pm, they got into the water behind the area of the falls to play.  Dada Peer is said to have slipped first in the current of the water.  Moinuddin who panicked, got into the water to rescue Dada Peer and got drowned.  Aji Mukhandar who saw his brother and Dada Peer getting washed away, also got down in the water himself and got dragged in the current.    

The number of people visiting the place has increased of late, and police security has also been increased. Usually no one was permitted to see the Jog Falls from the place where the tragedy occured. Sign boards warning the visitors of danger are also displayed at the spot. The group that had come from Hubli was playing a little away from it.

As the speed of wind coupled with water current had increased on Sunday evening, the three could not save themselves.

The bodies which came floating, fell from a height of 830 feet and could not be located since.  Attempts of Siddapur and Jog police to locate the bodies have not yielded any results.  Police officials said the attempts will continue on Monday.

As per police sources, if the bodies get stuck in between rocks, it will be necessary to call the experts for the purpose.  If the bodies reach the bottom of the falls, it takes a minimum of three days to locate them.
