FIFA U-17 World Cup: Nigeria grouped with Mexico


Lagos (Nigeria), Aug 27 (IANS): Nigeria's U-17 national team has been drawn in Group F with FIFA U-17 World Cup defending champions Mexico, Iraq and Sweden for the 2013 edition.

The draw was held Monday in Abu Dhabi. A total of 52 matches would be played between Oct 17 and Nov 8 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Sharjah and Al Ain will host the matches, reports Xinhua.

The hosts are drawn in Group A with Brazil, Honduras and Slovakia while runners-up of the 2011 edition Uruguay have been drawn in Group B with New Zealand, Cote d'Ivoire and Italy.

Group C has Croatia, Morocco, Panama and Uzbekistan while Tunisia, Venezuela, Russia and Japan are in Group D. Canada, Austria and Iran were pitched in Group E with Argentina.

Nigeria's Golden Eaglets were runners-up in the 2009 edition behind Switzerland after emerging champions of the 2007 edition, but did not qualify for the 2011 edition.

The Golden Eaglets will play the group's opening game Oct 19 against champions Mexico, who are also the reigning CONCACAF champions.
