From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Aug 30: An ambitious two-lane tunnel bypass road is proposed to be taken at the Shiradi Ghat section connecting Bangalore to coastal city of Mangalore at an estimated cost of Rs 2,700 crore.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has given a green signal to take up feasibility study and to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the tunnel road bypass in Shiradi Ghat section of National Highway 48.

A team of experts from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) visited the Shiradi Ghat and submitted a preliminary report on 18.5 km tunnel road bypass.

As per the JICA estimates, a four-lane project would cost Rs 3,800 crore.

However, the State Government would like to take up a two-lane project on a pilot basis, which is expected to cost Rs 2,700 crore.

This information was given by Karnataka’s Public Works Dr H C Mahadevappa, who submitted details of various road project proposals in the State to Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes in New Delhi on August 27.

The Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry has taken a decision to accord in principal approval for getting feasibility studies and detailed engineering study (DPR) with regard to the tunnel road bypass in Shiradi Ghat section.

The DPR preparation may require around one year, Dr Mahadevappa said indicating that the final cost may go up when the project is actually implemented.

The department has decided to repair the 47 km road at a cost of Rs 28 crore, the minister said pointing out that the very bad condition of the Shiradi Ghat road was a matter of serious concern to motorists, goods and transport operators and people visiting the coastal region

The project has been submitted to the Centre as one of the proposals for the year 2013-14, Dr Mahadevappa said.

He pointed out that it was mandatory to repair this stretch of road once in three years. But unfortunately, the Shiradi Ghat section road had not been repaired since last five years.

The minister said the repair work would begin after the monsoon season was over.

Dr Mahadevappa also admitted bad condition of nearly 10,000 km road in the State.

Filling up potholes will be taken up after the end of the monsoon rains, he said.

The minister said the public works department required nearly Rs 1,200 crore to fix potholes.

Pinning hopes on Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s review of the PWD works in the first week of next month, the minister disclosed that the department would request the release Rs 1,200 crore for pothole filling.

what ever the development projects may take place bribery is involved, without bribery no work cannot be implemented.when the bidder bribes automitically the quality of work becomes cheap.so the players like L&T cannot be able to acquire this type of projects, who have name and fame of good projects in foreign land also.

The shiradi Ghat does not warrant any tunnel and it will be huge burden to the exchequer. As well tunnel is not safe for buses. Tax payers money should not be misused. Reputed companies like Larsen & Tubro be given the task to lay guaranteed Concrete lasting at least 50 years. Both sides of the roads require adequate well built drainage throughout with accurate culverts to release gushing rain water. Here we need state of the art road work that is all. I have seen in Canada a vast country in the world has built plain highways with state of the art asphalt technology. We can build this with great will power by Siddu government.

KS D'Silva, Dubai, You are right I fully agree with you. Political blame game followed by almost all parties. Just look at the pethatic condition of fly over at Bikarnakatee Kaikamba construction is going on for the last 7 years still not completed. If no funds do not start project, the bridge collapsed twice, the steel put in the brodge totally corroded worst planning, poor supervision , No safety to the road users, I feel how badly our Engineers are performing on Govt. Projects. We are unlucky to have this kind of administrators and rulers. Have no choice other than struggling.

Dont get excited with this project. It is a big project, only if the center interfere's the project will commence because it involves a lot of money, The state government will only talk like all politicians do, Be happy only when the work is in progress. According to me, all they will do is repair the old road and pocket the money.

What Mr. poojary, what are you saying.
BJP could not even "REPAIR" shiradi Ghat section road in 5 years (60 months) when they were ruling Karnataka and funds allotted for same at least three times gone down the throat of BJP Ministers and waiting for them to COME TO POWER and then expect them to study and complete this mammoth project?....!! For which generation to benefit? May be you are talking about 200 years from now?
You had myopia (it occurs only when BJP is the Govt.) otherwise you would have seen the state of affairs of our roads for the last 5 years. Such ordinary project, BJP, after announcing upteen times deadlines to repair them, they could not, how on earth they can undertake this mammoth project....Ok let us forget all that silly talk..

Here they are talking of completing this project within 5 years time from approval DPR which will take a year so.

They should go for four lane road. If at all the project takes off, by the time of completion its actual requirement will be double after few years. Then for additional lane it may cost ten times or more!! Look at konkan railway!! It may cost 10 to 15 times more for the second track!!

Instead of Four lane tunnel, the Karnataka State Govt has agreed for only two lane tunnel to save Rs.1100 crores. If one small accident happens inside Two lane tunnel, then whole tunnel will be blocked whole day. This has been frequently happening in North India and other places wherever there are only Two lane tunnels. Maharashtra has four lane tunnels where the traffic is very smooth inspite of big accidents inside the tunnel.
KTK Govt's proposal of Two lane tunnel is short-sighted and also biased against coastal area as usual.
Same govt has proposal before it of Rs.1200 crores to just fill Pot Holes in State Road, out of this only Rs.500 crores will be actually spent and remaining Rs.700 crores will go to the pockets of corrupt Politicians, Contractors and Engineers.

Dinesh u must read the ministers statement carefully first, before making senseless statement. Minister says for the last 5 yrs the repair of the road it self was not tsken care and how u expect BJP would complete the project on time. BJP just completed 5 yrs by infighting and giving 3 nonperforming chief miniters to our state.

Something nice and positive is in the new horizon. Thanks be to God. Let us rejoice and thank God for bringing new light in the minds of our beloved leaders. The tunnel bypass road for Shiradi Ghat section is an ideal propostion and should be embraced by all means and under all circumstances with grateful thanks.

All the major cities of the world that we have hitherto travelled we have witnessed so many tunnels that have paved way for smoother and quicker traffic. Karnataka authorities are fully familiar with the tunnel constructions because the Hassan/Mangalore railway has the proven record of success already in their possession. The Japanese have the talent and expertize for tunnel trafficking and they will do a good job in India, as always.

Potholes on our roadways will always prevail due to our monsoon conditions, but these potholes can be remedied thru a "stich in time" process. The quicker you patch up the potholes the better you save the rest of the roadway. In America most of the potholes are repaired either at night or during the week ends when the traffic is much lesser. Potholes are even repaired with advanced notice on the radio or tv announcements so that people avoid coming out on the roads and avoid further congestion when the entire lane is closed. This is a simple common sense and the duty of travelling public.

We have a chain of prayers for the welfare and developments of India, but if there is one "priority prayer" that we have in mind and it would be for the development, progress and upkeep of our roadways in Karnataka.

We fully appreciate all the concern and efforts of all our leaders and authorities that are responsible for the betterment of our road systems. We want them and their families also to remain safe and comfortable so that we can watch their "dignity vehicles" passing by and that we waive out to them and salute them for a job well done. A sincere "Namaskhaara" from Texas and "Dhewarah Ashirwadh"

Detailed Project Report (DPR) for two-lane tunnel bypass road for Shiradi Ghat section?

    Surely Good, if implemented!

I hope, our present and successive Governments should keep a track of cost incurred for DPR's and various proposals they have made!

At this rate, implementation leave aside, even keeping track of all proposals made would not be an easy task!

Again it is 2 lane? Proposal from JICA is for 4 lane. Invest once for all coming 100 years consists of 4 lane. It is tunnel. If one vehicle is struck due to accident in one lane whole traffic is jam for whole day. Oscar Fernandezji re look in to the proposal to plan it for coming generation once for all.

I suggest that both national Highway and Indian Railways should together implement the project on cost sharing. A two line railway also should be laid in the tunnel. At present 54 KMS railway line between Sakleshpura and Subramanya Road required 2.5 hours for travel.
