Mangalore, Aug 31: ‘Yuva Spandan’, a one-day workshop for budding writers to give them a basic idea about literature, organized by ICYM, Mangalore diocese was inaugurated at ICYM office, Olivet House, Jeppu here on Saturday August 31.

Writer Andrew L D’Cunha, who was the chief guest, inaugurated the workshop in a unique way by reading his poem titled ‘Abachem Ghar’.

Roshan Madtha, former ICYM president, writer and workshop convener Vitori Karkal, ICYM director Fr Ronald D’Souza, president Sheldon Crasta, secretary Ashwini D’Souza shared the dais.

Speaking after inaugurating the workshop, Andrew D’Cunha lauded the organizers for putting up 'a beautiful, much-needed workshop for young writers'. "In order to be good in literature (writer), one has to go through a narrow path, that is difficulty, and has to sacrifice a lot of things," he said, adding that he too experienced the same 25 years back.

He described literature as ‘memories of a person presented in a systematic way before the public’. There are so many ways of publishing literature, but one has to choose right path, he added.

"We want young writers who should write the experiences of elderly people. Before writing one word, a writer has to read at least a thousand words, only then he would be able to write well. The youth must read as much as they can," he said.

Vitori Karkal in his address said, "A good writer should be a reader first and then he should inculcate knowledge, purify it and then give it to readers. Literature is much needed these days as it can give immense joy."

"A one-day camp cannot make a person a writer, it can only create interest. These kinds of camps should continue," said Vitori asking youth to make good use of it.

The inaugural programme was followed by a street play titled ‘Konkani Amcho Fudar’ by Kalakul Repertory and street play on drugs by ICYM, Modankap.

The valedictory of the workshop will be held on September 1 at 4 pm.

Yuvaspandan was a very succesful program. nearly 48 members had actively participated.ICYM can gather more than THOUSANDS but this program was organised only to young writers those were seleced ones to form a editorial board for amcho yuvak magzine. so Mr. philip kindly dont discourage but encourage our ICYM youth... ICYM can make wonders and has created many leaders too.

It is really discouraging to see such a small group of committee members plus participants for a large organisation like ICYM. Where our ICYM is heading towards? Why the youth are not attracted towards ICYM?
