Sullia, Sep 18: In gruesome incident, an elderly man was tied up, gagged, strangled and hacked to death at his residence at Uppukala, Balugodu here on Tuesday September 17.

The deceased has been identified as Parameshwar Gowda (70).

Parameshwar had lost his wife about 14 years ago and since then was living alone at Uppukala. Among his two children, his daughter is married to a man from Jakirlay in Sullia while the son stays in Kaikamba.

A local named Ganapayya was hired by Parameshwar Gowda to assist him in his plantation located close to the house. Ganapayya had taken leave on Sunday and Monday, and when he returned to duty on Tuesday, he found the door of the house ajar and Parameshwar lying in a pool of blood.

Ganapayya immediately informed Subramanya police who arrived at the spot. A canine squad and fingerprint experts were also called.

Based on wounds and marks visible on the body, the police said that Parmeshwar's hands and feet were tied up and he was gagged before being brutally murdered.

A drawer in a desk was thrown open and its contents were rummaged. A watch, a mobile phone and other items were found strewn around, and police suspect that the culprits were only after money.

A sickle was found in the plantation, and Ganapayya confirmed that it did not belong to Parameshwar.

Mangalore additional police inspector Shivkumar, Puttur police inspector Sadananda Varnekar, Sullia circle inspector Sudarshan, Subramanya SI Kushalappa Gowda inspected the crime spot.

Further investigations are on.

Will someone question Ganapayya now? I think it is unfortunate that innocent people become the first suspects, but in this case, it would be illogical to exclude anyone. Just see, another two days.

Interogate ganapayya. Why would anyone go and kill a 70 year old that too in such a poor house?

Canines are more reliable than humans today. Where education and progress has brought us!

People kill so casually. The man may/may not have wealth in the house. And surely he will surrender all if the robbers are powerful. Why kill?

There must be some other threat to the robbers - not the resistance of a 70 year old man. The identity threat?
