A month after finding new home, ex-millionaire editor back on pavement

Mumbai, Sep 18 (Mid-Day): Nearly a month after Sunita Naik and her ageing Pomeranian Sashi found a new home with Vile Parle couple George and Christine Misquitta, the 65-year-old former editor has returned to the footpath outside the gurdwara where MiD DAY had found her.

Citing adjustment issues and minor squabbles, Naik moved out of the Misquitta residence on Monday morning and returned to the pavement outside Sachkhand Darbar Gurdwara in Versova.

Naik, who claims to have been the editor of a prestigious Marathi magazine, had made the footpath her home for over two months – after mysteriously losing the millions she claims to have made with the sale of her two Worli apartments and cars in 2007.

Soon after her story appeared in Sunday MiD DAY, reader George Misquitta and his wife Christine decided to bring her to their apartment in Vile Parle (West), where they live along with their 10 pet dogs.

“Christine was really sweet to me and would take good care of me. George too would prepare meals of my choice and would even wash my clothes, but eventually what I found was that there were too many differences creeping up on a daily basis, owing to difference in our respective lifestyles. It was in our mutual interest to part ways amicably,” said Naik, looking healthier, more alert and visibly happy in the company of gurdwara officials and local friends, when MiD DAY visited her on Tuesday afternoon.

Friend in need

Naik was seen asking her friend Neena Saini, who lives in the neighbourhood, to treat her to a tomato omelette with gram flour and ketchup later in the evening.

“I don’t eat non-vegetarian food on Tuesdays. Food is not an issue for me as the gurdwara takes care of that, but there are times when I like some variety in my diet,” she said with a smile.

Back with a bang

Naik maintained that she now has the confidence and energy to bounce back and lead her life with dignity.

Neena said that after Naik left to live with Misquitta, there had been two instances when people stepped out of their cars and enquired about Naik, wanting to host her at their homes.

Hindi film and television actor Mangal Dhillon, who was keen that Naik take up residence in one of his vacant flats, said that in her absence, a buyer purchased the property.

“We offered to take her to my Ashram in Ludhiana, Punjab, but she wants to stay in Mumbai and rebuild her career. She is also keen to track her missing money, so now, we are hunting for an alternate accommodation for her,” said Dhillon.

What went wrong?

At the beginning, Naik was at ease at the Misquitta residence, and had even memorised the names of all the 10 dogs in no time. But squabbles started soon. “Arguments started over trivial things like excessive spice in food and giving Crocin to the pet, which I feel is very harmful. We tried our best to cope with the continuous flow of her friends. Naik would often make demands of food she ate when she had money, but it was an unrealistic challenge for us,” said Gregory.

He added that their relationship took a further beating, when Naik lost two of his brand new mobiles that had been gifted to her in quick succession. “At the end of the day, coming to live with us was her choice, and so is her exit. We would like her to be happy wherever she stays,” said Gregory.

Stan, Dubai, I fail to understand what made you to startle so much on comments of Mr. Bean. What is wrong in his suggestion to the person who is in Mumbai to help the needy who also is in Mumbai ? What is the immediate requirement ? Recovering her lost money or providing her a safe shelter ? I heartily salute Vile Parle couple George and Christine Misquitta for their generous heart to accommodate a stranger when people devastate their own parents during their old age. Have a nice week end Mr. Stan, Dubai. Cheers !!

It is the Old age problem of No ADJUSTMENT, NO Compromise... Not ready to bend or follow Juniors.... She was the Editor of a weekly... Hmmmm.... She might not have read our famous epic where it says "We have to look after our kids till age 5 as Gods. Then till they attain majority they should be treated like enemies. Once they attain Majority they should be treated as if they are friends. Later we have to listen to them as they also has views, experiences, capacity to judge on their own." If we have not followed like this results are different than expected.

So, This lady is an example who never understood that....

Comeon Dr., how can she recover all of her lost millions at a glance? Speedy recovery of money is impossible, it takes time. So let (good) people help her at their best level. You are also in bombay why dont you do something for her?

Any comments can not stop stubbornness...
It comes with age and even if subdued due to misfortunes will reappear when in good company...
Age also is an adding factor...
    Very sad situation...
    Repeat cries have fewer takers...
    Hope she will be okay...

    Madam ,

Since you have decided to make pavement as your home inspite of genuine help from fellow mumbaikars, watch out for Sallu Bhai and his JW Marriot after party drunken adventures on Bandra-Versova Roads.

My suggestion sleep during the day time and remain awake at night watching out for Sallu Bhai's Fast and Furious Pavement drive.

When I told about this lady everyone has objected on my comments. When the person lived as King/queen, how she will obey others????? She will live like queen even she is depending upon someone’s help. Now I feel our Daijiworld Good Samaritans has to plan to help her by giving her money and accommodation for her dogs.

It will be very difficult to help such lady who was staying in Bungalow and not using public transport in her life - Stan, Dubai..

Wow..what an observation. Mind you she was staying on pavement outside Gurudwara. She had adjusted her life. I appreciate the good samaritans who helped this lady. Nice to know that there are good samaritans who follow bible. Some people just preach and zero in humanity. But those who have helped this lady during her difficult times showed to the world that humanity still exists.

    There are people
    'ಹೋಗೆ ಹೋದ ಮನೆ ಆಗೋಲ್ಲ
    ದುವರ್ ಗೆಲ್ಲೆಂ ಘರ್ ಜಯ್ನಾ'
people can not do much for them as long as they don't want to adjust and even age too wont permit to adjust now.

At her old age, she seems very adamant and hard to adjust to the convenience to the provider of help.
Some people, when they get older, their inborn adamant habits are not rectified but will get harder, and will turn as perpetually nagging type of people. She must be put into some nursing home and provide mental therapy.

Old People who have lived their Life according to their choice, hardly can adjust to changed time or requirements of modern time.
They don't want to change for others requirements.
They want to lead their Life- My Way or No Way (they always think its only right way).
Conflicts in family between generations is for this reason. If neither party buckles or is willing to change, then they part ways.
I don't think she might be comfortable in Old Age Ashrams as well.
Hope she will be comfortable wherever she lives in future.

Still not learning lessons from past mistakes. Old habits will not die easily. Something is wrong with her attitude or she is egoistic. Why she needs a pet beside when she has no shelter for herself? Now how she is going to support two lives.?
