Bantwal, Sep 20: A pregnant woman died allegedly due to the negligence of doctors here on Friday September 20.

Vice-president of Sarapady gram panchayat Shakuntala (32), a resident of Kokala is the deceased.

Shakuntala was admitted to the hospital on Thursday September 19 due to labour pains. She was subjected to continuous tests and her health deteriorated on Friday, September 20 at 11 am. The doctor suggested the family to take her to Mangalore hospital. The relatives, who grew anxious about the doctor’s suggestion, tried to take her by ambulance 108. However, she breathed her last on the way. Shakuntala’s husband Sai Shanthi has complained to the police in this regard.

Villagers expressed anguish against the private hospital which they claimed was responsible for Shakuntala’s death. Though she was brought to the hospital on the day the doctor had asked, Shankuntala died due to improper treatment, they said. As similar incidents have occurred here in the past, the department of health should take disciplinary measures against the hospital so that such incidents do not recur, urged the villagers.

Sai Shanti and Shakuntala have two children. Daughter Samatha is studying in fifth standard while son Samanth is in third standard.

The death of the active vice-president of gram panchayat has spread an atmosphere of gloom in Sarapady.

A case has been registered in Bantwal police station against Dr Indira who attended to Shakuntala.

If the patient was subject to continuous tests and health deteriorated, that is not doctor's fault. The doctor recommended that the patient be shifted to a hospital with better amenities. Things happen in a hospital. Blaming the doctors is counter-productive. As one of the reader pointed out, if people continue blaming doctors, doctors will be reluctant to take up any complicated cases.

I have seen time and again people getting hurt in a road accident and people are reluctant to help. Extending this scenario, what if doctors hesitate to treat because the case is complicated?

Action should be taken against the doctor as well as the managemant of the hospital. They could have checked the patient on thursday and if its not possible for them to help her out they could have informed earlier. They play with life. What were they doing till friday?

Many of such cases have happened. Management will be knowing about this. Once they are aware of this they should make sure that such cases donot repeat and should provide sufficient doctors. Its waste telling them. They donot change because of no one will punish them.

Its indeed a sad incident and all the sympathies for the family of the deceased. But instead of a lay person commenting on the treatment given to the patient, how about you doing medicine and try saving the lives of millions. Always its easier said than done.

In village at the last moment only patient goes to hospital.Doctor is not a god,he/she does his duty.Relatives of the victim always in their grief accuse doctors.but others should find out the proper reason before act.Someday doctors may not come forward to treat us if we reach in a critical condition.
