Mangalore, Sep 24: It is easy to talk and complain about bad roads in the city, and easier to point fingers at the administration. But few take matters into their hands and strive for change through positive action.

A special initiative by Angelore Ground Friends has set an example for all.

Potholes on roads are everywhere, but when coupled with heavy traffic on the main roads in the city, they become even more of a nuisance for motorists, especially during rains.

One such major pothole was spotted on Kankanady main road, opposite to Euro Gold showroom. Deciding to put an end to people's woes without waiting for authorities, Angelore Ground Friends, a team of youth under the leadership of Alwyn D’Silva, took the initiative to solve this problem.

Nearly 25 to 30 youths joined hands in this cause which was carried out on Sunday September 22 after 11 pm. Potholes were filled with two loads of red stone mixed with mud and a JCB was used to set right the road.

Speaking to Daijiworld, D’Silva said, “I am a daily commuter on this road. The potholes here have been causing major problems to the public, especially to the two-wheelers and small vehicles like cars and auto rickshaws. I wanted to do something about this issue and hence, along with the youth, as a part of social service, filled the potholes with mud.”

“There are major potholes in the neighboring roads, which will be also be filled in the coming days,” he said.

The youths put in hard efforts and worked throughout the night, up till 3.30 am. Corporator Asha D’Silva as well as body builder and cine artist Raymond D’Souza were among those present.

Very well done boys. Since the Mayor has not been appointed all the road repair and other developmental works are held up. Your initiatve in this work is definitely appreciated. Last week I saw valencia ladies group has cleared roadside weeds and picked up all the plastic scraps and other garbage and cleansed the locality of Jeppu and Valencia etc. So this also needs to be appreciated.

I don't want to demoralize anyone but i would like to inform you all that Soft mud as shown in the photos is a WRONG AND SHORT TERM solution to fill potholes and it may prove to be dangerous as two wheelers might get stuck in the muck or they might skid.

A wet place like Mangalore requires open graded Asphalt roads at least 3 cms thick as these tend to be porous and can absorb the additional rain water without damaging the surface and provide safety to riders.

The "Intelligent People" of Mangalore need to do some research as short term solutions might be hazardous for people in the long run.

I am writing this only in public interest with an intention to save life and limb. PEACE!!

Appreciate the work done but is this the right way?
The mud will create more and more trouble especially for 2 wheelers and its really dangereous, most of 2 wheelers riders will skid and a major tragedy may take place, if they really wanted to shut the Pothole should have Put Concreter (Cement) this is completely wrong to put Mud and it looks so dirty.
i dont appreciate the idea of Mud.

Good Work Guys, keep doing but looking at your work its just waste of time and efforts, becuse the mud with broken stone will create more problems than solution, instead of that if you would have used cold bitumen mixed with crushed stone or jelly and jelly powder will last long and your efforts would have given better fruit. Just wait for a week if its raining then the pot holes will splash the mud to adjacent areas making whole area dirty and if the sunny days continues the mud will turn in to dust and remaining crushed stone will be a problem for both the pedestrains and the vehicular traffic. I dont think a drum of cold bitumin will cost a lot while the good friends has spent on backhoe, tipper and a load of mud. Please guys dont take this comment in a negetive sence I really appreciate the works done by the brothers just put my opinion to make their efforts worth.

Kudos to our youngsters! Angelore young friends have taken the lead for mny youths in the state and country to follow. “CHANGE’ in our POLITICIANs behaviour cannot be demanded or expected by us. “WE” should be the CHANGE to move to progress. As President Obama just said “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ONES. We’ve been waiting for. WE are the change that we seek” Proud of you all!

Great job and a social work by the Angelore Ground Friend, youths. I hope others will follow their foot-steps from rest of the areas. Our corporation is for name sake only. Corrupt people. They exist just to fill their pockets. Shame on these guys.

I hope Mr. J.R. Lobo will take a serious note of this development.

It happened during 1987 when I was studying in KPT. The highway beside Kadri Park had many path holes and one day myself and my class mate Gopal decided to fill some of them using the stones beside the roads and we were doing it one afternoon during the break. Same time a government car holding PWD board stopped and a well dressed officer asked us what we are doing. We told them we are filling path holes to help the vehicles move smoothly. He just moved from there. Believe it or not next day the whole road was repaired by PWD. It reminded me the contribution of a squirrel to build the bridge in RAMAYANA.

How many people pay taxes in India. India has a Population of Approximately 1.2 billion, Only 3 Percent of the Indian Population pay the tax. India's 846 Million people earn just $2 per day. So only 36 million out of 1.2 billion people pay taxes.

..i came across a unique idea in a western country, where locals painted caricature of local political representative near the pothole on road..within a day photos of the potholes with politicians caricature gone viral on all media and road was repaired within a week!!..Kudos to AG Friends who helped the helpless commuters but finally it was the duty of the Govt to take care of the Roads not the tax payers..Govt spends recklessly nobody knows where it goes..Sadly AADHAR card also became useless since supreme court said it is not mandatory..then what is the use of spending thousand of crores, when already we are using Ration cards & voter IDs for identification!!

The initiative taken by Angelore ground friends under the leadership of Alwyn D'silva is tremendous. If the youths in every area take up this initiative to fill the potholes in their area we can see better roads and avoid accidents rather than submitting appeals to the ministers and waiting for their actions. God bless the youths who lent their hands for this social service.I will not be wrong if I say this is the community that speaks less but works more for the welfare of the people and the country.Thumka somesthank bol bolaiki magtha.

Youth of pandeshwar area please wake up to the messy potholed road opposite the head post office. It is in a pitiable condition because of the construction work for the Mall and plying of heavy vehicles and parking of these lorries by the road side. It leaves no room for the vehicular traffic but to drive through the potholes.
