Bantwal, Sep 24: "There is no need to destroy Kalladka town to widen Hassan - B C Road stretch, instead let them build a bypass road," said Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Udupi Pejawar Math.

He addressed media persons after holding discussions with Rashtriya Santrastara Horata Samiti, during his visit to Kalladka on Tuesday September 24 morning.

Speaking further, he said, if four-land roads are constructed here, then hundreds of people will face problems. "There is no need for roads that destroy towns and cities. It is best to construct a bypass road," he said.

Assuring his support to the fight against the project, the Swamiji said that he would hold discussions with the central land ministry and the highway authority in this regard.

National Heddari Santrastara Horata Samiti honorary president Dr Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat briefed on the problems posed by the proposed road widening project.

When Swamiji asked Dr Bhat if there was any politics involved in the fight, Dr Bhat said, "Our main aim is to protect Kalladka town and the members in the committee are from different political parties and religions."

Padmanabh Kottary briefed the Swamiji about the problem posed by the proposed construction of underpass.

Dr Kamala Prabhakar Bhat, Horata Samiti president Dinesh Shenoy, gram panchyat president Sundar Kulal, Kunhi Ahmed, Stanislaus D’Souza, Shivaji Bhat, Monappa Devasya, Ramesh Kalladka, Donald D’Souza, Thirumaleshwar Bhat, Suresh Kalladka, Shivaram Holla, K H Hamubba, Yathin Kumar among others were present.

About the project

The highway department has prepared a four-lane project that will raze down Kalladka town. The department plans to carry on the four-lane work through construction of an underpass similar to the ones built in Brahmavar and Padubidri that have created much inconvenience to the people.

The department has already earmarked 22.5 meters (total 45 meters) on either side of the present highway for acquisition. The new highway will be built on the present highway at a height of fifteen feet, and underpasses will be built on the ways to Amtoor and Vittal.  There will be service roads on both sides of the highway.  If the highway is built as per the plans, it will divide Kalladka town.

What is an underpass?

The four-lane highway will not be constructed on level land. Instead, a fifteen-feet high wall will be built on both sides of the present highway. The inside portion will be filled and a four-lane road will be constructed within them.  Construction of two underpasses on ground level at Amtoor and Vittal cross are part of the project.

What is the problem?

The department plans to make the four-lane highway pass through the present Kalladka town. The department’s plan to go ahead with the four-lane highway through the town has sent anxiety among residents.

The four lane road will close Kalladka with a large wall. It will stop transport on both the sides.  People will have to rely only on the underpass to cross the road, and walk for long distances in order to reach the other side.

Lack of awareness

If Kalladka highway gets widened, some of business establishments, houses and buildings will get destroyed. Many people know that Kalladka town will be sacrificed for the highway.  However, the fact that the town will get divided due to underpass is known to very few, and hence there have few protests so far.

Now that the people are aware of the problems created by the underpass at Brahmavar, a protest committee has examined them.

The residents and members of protest committee are anxious that the future of the residents is in jeopardy due to the new plans of the government.

Dear Pejawar Swamij, when any religious leaders concentrate on only on spirituality of their faith and belief, then t the congregation will grow in spirituality. If the religious leaders drift away and join in political issues, local issues then the congregation will loose the trust with their religious leaders.

We want development, we insist we have good roads, but we oppose it when it is time for authorities to implement and act on the same.!! How ironical.
With due respect to Swamiji, to all dignitaries in the picture, I wish to say Swamiji should maintain his dignity as a Religious Leader and allow Road work to concerned authorities. Where were you when other roads were widened in and around cities and Districts including Udupi & Mangalore? Why now when it comes to kalladka? Are you trying to safe guard interest of a single individual and stalling a High way Project? That is not justified am sure.!! Let us grow beyond petty politics and look ahead towards a better roads for travel and a better place to live in..!! Swamiji, please think about thousand of under privileged people, rather than few influential individuals.!! This is not politics, but it is a National Highway project.!! I am a neutral person, so am not politicking either - please.!!

Kalladka Bhat,Swamiji,Kottary etc., in the picture who are in a laughing mode are well aware of their game plan/inner storey of this protest. This is nothing but Kalladka Bhat bachaavo rather than Kalladka town bahaavo. Both Bhat and Swamijiare experts in 'Chaanakya neeti' and Swamijis query to Mr.Bhat is pointer to this.Unfortunately envisaged work likely to take a diversion route....if our heavy weight Rai too plays his 'kuduka neeti' in this episode. He will now start kallu adaka to Kalladka!!!!!!!

Religious people are at their best as long as they do not get out of their duties and boundary! These days they are everywhere!!! Then why do we need lawmakers, politicians and government??? Why do we need to vote to rise our voice!!? World is at its best when people and holders of their post mind their business!!! There are highway engineers, PWD, professors in colleges of civil engineering, MBA, FCA, IAS, IPS, and state portfolios!! Where does religious heads fit in at packed jurisdiction??? Better every one mind their own business!!

I can not understand why Pejawar Swamiji is always ive in his fight against injustice. He gets into social engagements when interests of powerful people are involved. We never heard him raise his voice when the whole state was looted in the name of mining and hundreds of people died under the wheels of trucks carrying ore. A popular movement without these so called partisan leaders will be better for the people of Kalladka

Pumpwell to Talapady, everywhere the road is broadened destroying houses, shops etc to the benefit of vehicles moving to Kerala. Kalladka King never objected that! Now A road connecting us to the capital of the state is being widened for our own use and benefit, Kalladka king uses swamiji as a shield and blocks the road work.
God save the people of Kalladka and Tulunadu

No offense, but Swamiji should make a clear difference between people resisting change and people with genuine grievances. Supporting just to be on the side of popular opinion is the easiest way. Let us face it, Kalladka's own population is much more than it was few years ago. As population grows infrastructure has to be provided.
A potential solution would be to have a four lane allevated highway. I am sure these very people might have objections saying that they have to go the neighboring town to get on to the highway.
Bypass would be a solution. But that means a lot of agricultural land will be sacrificed and land aquisition and related wrangles could take time.

With this 'I OBJECT' attitude people in this region will suffer and as seen in the past some folks of Coastal Karnataka have always raised objection whenever there was any big project to be launched.

No wonder the "Intelligent People" still have to put up with narrow highways, pot-hole f and lastly our "Intelligent People" still have to go to another land to earn their daily bread.

Youth today want 6-8 lane Super Express highways, better planned cities and lay outs, Pot Hole free roads, Better job opportunities....But i guess Coastal Karnataka is destined to a haphazardly built region and our roads are destined to be narrow & muddy roads all thanks to some wise people.

Respected Swamiji visited Kalladka on the request of Kalladka Prabhaker Bhat. Both are the great leaders of RSS in South India. The highway will effect Bhat's business that is the reason his worry. Now he lost his government and his Majesty Power in the name of Swamiji he started playing politics thinking that Mr. Oscar Fernandes, Road Minister may listn to Swamiji because of his Udupi relationship. Let us wait and see how far this business politics will work.

    @Richard, Mangalore.

One must remember the sacrifices made by coastal people for the sake of Konkan railway, as well as the expansion of NH66.

Let Kalladka not become a issue for the sake of protecting the vested interests involved in this drama.

Udupi swami is least bothered about the pathetic progress of NH 66 at Brahmavar, which happens to be part of Udupi!

    Progress comes first.

    Jai Hind!
