Mangalore, Sep 26: The officers of Mangalore city corporation (MCC) includng the environmental engineers and health inspectors on Thursday September 26 raided a cement godown at Hoige Bazar and sealed it.

Acting on complaints from the residents in the vicinity, the officers sealed the godown belonging to Madras Cements Ltd for creating pollution and operating without a valid licence.

Speaking to reporters, environment engineer Madhu Manohar said that the raid was carried out on the orders of MCC commissioner Ajith Hegde and MLA J R Lobo. "The residents here complained about the pollution caused during loading and unloading of cement from the goods wagon. They submitted an appeal to the DC, MCC and to the MLA," he said.

He said that the godown has been functioning from the past three years and does not have a licence. However, soon after the people complained, the firm applied for a licence from the MCC.

The MCC then sent two notices to the firm, both of which went unanswered. The MCC also asked the firm to shift the godown to an industrial area, yet there was no response. Hence, J R Lobo looked into the matter and MCC commissioner Ajith Hegde directed the officers to take action, Manohar said.

The officers told the manager of the godown, Arun, to apply for a fresh licence if operation has to resume.

Manager Arun told reporters that only one apartment near the godown was facing problem and not the entire vicinity.

MCC officials Bharat Kumar, Babu Malnur, Basarvaraj, Yashwant and Karunakar were part of the raid operation.

My heart goes out to the people working in the godown. I see the pictures, cement is all over their bodies. This will prove hazardous to their health. What about their poor families? Is there any insurance cover for them? The Company needs to take care of it. All of us are only concerned about ourselves, sadly we don't think about others.

26th Sept is a great day in the life of Hoigebazar residents. It is because they finally won in the battle in irredicating the illigal cement godown in their residential area. These residents were trying for this cause for the last 6 to 7 months. Finally God has answered their humble prayers throgh the Saviors of MCC authorities. Long live Mr.Ajith Hegde and other Officials. The residents were facing a number of such probles in their living area. Not only cement dust but even the drinking water of their wells was polluted.A good number of educational institutions are nereby and a Nursing girls Hostel was just opposite of this godown. Now all are saved and a good day has come in their life.

The comment about "Manager Arun told reporters that only one apartment near the godown was facing problem " Is a Joke . Its like pin pointing someone . How can only one APT have a problem ? I know the dust caused by this cement godown . We could not sit in the temples nearby . Dust everywhere .... At least the Apt was higher up and may be 3rd floors and above did not get affected much ... tiles of every house was covered with cement dust. Moreover along with the dust the cement lorries were another pain ..First of all we have a railway track there which causes inconvenience when in hurry while going to hospital etc. and second thing is the dust from loading and unloading of cement .
Actually you should watch the inhumane condition in which the workers unload cement bags .
No one is against someone doing business .But whatever you do ensure that its LEGAL and does not cause harm to the health of the PEOPLE . The owners of cement go down will not pay the hospital bills caused due to air pollution.
Fact : Long term exposure to concrete dust can lead to a disabling lung disease called silicosis. I could not wear contact lens due to the fine dust causing irritation in the eye . Doctor told me about the cement dust / fine dust being the cause .
Thanks to 356 people who signed and gave the petetion to the authorities and got this godown sealed .
THANKS to Commissioner , POLICE , MCC and Our MLA

Desease, when it strikes it does not ask who you are. losses of life when it accounts there are thousands to morn. when it is loss of health that is concerned the patient cannot have more patience to wait as patient and prove the accountability from where he has carried or picked it.

Ocean is pleasing from far... but ferocious when you experience it. If it is one apartment, it has many peaceful homes, hundreds of innocent children who have to come to learn and work to save the future patients. It is good move.. irrespective of who has permitted to do this or the one who has taken the move to stopped this.

But, his concern was genuine. His cause was service and respect to the human lives.

I'm here on a vacation with my kids and we live next door to this godown at my parents place. We all have been constantly falling sick with allergic respiratory condition due to this cement pollution next door . Have photos to prove the extend of this pollution to the entire neighborhood area . I'm glad MCC finally took action after such a long wait and multiple & constant complaints placed by people in this neighborhood . I Hope MCC continue to do their good work and prevent further pollution and take action in more faster phase so people don't have to suffer for long.

Let MCC take action in every sphere. Why only after Mr.J.R.Lobo's phone call. Does the 'Country and Town Planning Act' say that ?

Why should MCC only take action ? Illegal activites can even be stopped by citizens. Of course we need to adhere to rules and take help when ones plea is not heard. We always get into analysis and suggest who needs to do it , why did he /she do it ..Cant one keep quite ..etc and etc ...But the basic question is WHY IS THE GODOWN OPERATING WITHOUT LICENCE ?
I think whoever took action has done a good job and they need to be applauded.

Will Mr.J.R.Lobo take the same amount of interest in demolishing all the illegal buildings in Mangalore through the same MCC ? Also parking of city / college buses on the main roads at night and creating a traffic hazard ?

I agree with your comment .
Yes i know a honest request was given to the owners. They did not comply. Then we approached the representatives we elected and they helped . This is a good move . Lets make mangalore a better place. If some one is throwing garbage in front of your house would we have kept quite ? I mean each of us need to make our place better and should not be scared . If Ghandhi was scared we would not have independence but would just have people commenting on online forms and not doing a thing :-).

Legally MLA has no authority to order such closure. It is the prerogative of Municipality/ Corporation to check the license and take action. MLA's business is to represent the case in assembly and not take law into his own hands. He might have done in public interest, but let the readers know the fact that MLAs are not God coming from heaven.

Any activity that suffocates living near residential place must be scrapped. Cement particles easily go into air and pollute surroundings resulting in slow deposition on surfaces. Inhalation of cement dust is harmful, unpleasant. Owners of the Gowdown belonging to Madras Cements Ltd were highly irresponsible. During BJP rule they started operating without a license right under Yogish Bhats nose. Now time to follow some discipline n comply with certain civil norms. Cement godown were given notices and given chance to explain... but these owners were arrogant n blatantly operating like in BJP goonda raj.
