Mangalore, Oct 3: "Women who have lost their husbands should not be called 'widows'. They must not be discriminated against and kept out of religious rituals. They must be treated as equal to men and shown respect like mothers," said Janardhan Poojary, addressing a press meet held here on Thursday, October 3.

On October 6, on the eve of Mangalore Dasara celebrations, two women who lost their husbands will be given a grand welcome with music band and religious rituals at Kudroli Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Temple. They will be inaugurating the Dattatreya idol at the Banyan tree (katte) near the temple, he said.

The two women will then continue to work in the temple as priestesses. They will also be allowed to enter the main 'Garbha Gudi' of the temple and perform puja to Lord Gokarnanatheswara, the deity of the temple, he said.

"There is a saying 'Matru Devo Bhava', which means 'mother is God'. Hence we must treat such women like mothers and allow them to perform any religious rituals and not discriminate against them. All are equal in the eyes of God. All possess the same rights in society, these were the preachings of Brahmashree Narayana Guru and the same principles will be followed in the Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheswara Temple," he said.

"Nowhere has it been written that women shouldn not perform religious rituals after they become widows, nor should they be discriminated against. Hence, with a view to give a woman her rights in society and to respect her like a mother, this step has been taken," he added.

"Women have been treated  with a lot of disrespect in society. Rape and atrocities are on the rise. If a woman is treated with motherly care, this can be stopped," he said.

Harikrishna Bantwal, Sai Ram, Padmaraj and others were present.

Unlike other commentators of Daijiworld, I neither support BJP nor congress, but to a party which will give good governance. I voted for Vajapayee, SM Krishna and then MMS based on good performance during UPA1. And I do not hesitate to say that I will vote for Modi this time. But this act of Janardhan Poojary is really a great one. He has done more for Mangalore than Nalin Kumar, Sadananda Gowda or Dhananjaya Kumar during last 20 years. I hope BJP wins at the centre, since change is required, but I hope Poojary wins Mangalore seat, since BJP has taken Mangalore seat for granted for long. And Poojary has always been with Mangalore people now and also when he was a MP many decades back. Unfortunately he has not got his due credit.

Many women become widows because of drunkerd husband who does not keep his health due to alcohol and also his family health due to his alcoholism.
Today all that required to our society is not a right to perform pooja as pooja can be very well performed at home also. What is required is removal of evils like alcoholism, dowry, lack of education, health care of children and old age parents and good behaviour in society.
I dont think Poojary has attempted to ban 'alcoholic drinks', dowry etc.Instead I remember him supporting removal of ban on arrack.
Please be open minded and judge now.

Banning alchohol leads to black market selling. Look at gujarat, they drive down to diu or virar or neighboring cities (of other states) and get all that they need.
Instead of banning alchohol, educate them on how to limit alchohol consumption, inculcate family values etc.

One incident during my childhood days still fresh in my memory. In our neighborhood, one young lady's husband died of ulceritis and they had only one boy child. They belong to a low class kulaal (those who make clay pots) community and were living in a joint family of many sisters, cousin sisters, their husbands and children.
After about 3 months, she requested her family members to get her married again as she couldn't control her desire for companionship, for which the entire family did not agree and left her with her fate.

    Dear Saldhana,
Your comment may be genuine one. But, i am provoked to reply to your qoute saying that "low class kulal". Definitely we are not!! Please be sensitive that DW readers belong to all communities. Please restrain from categorising based on financial condition, social standing..etc.

My sincere apologies if the language used was offensive. What I meant is economically low-class not socially, I have not seen a great improvement in certain sects of the society for the last 60 years. So my categorization was purely based on the economical status then and now.

I do agree with Pujaris comments. Why this society do not allow widows to perform rituals, always they were kept outside or far during religious, marriage functions. May be their husbands gone from this world early, its GODS wish and if the lady remained back, we must not treat her as widow but need to give due respect in all religious functions.I request all people to respect the widows in this society.

Mr Poojari's noble gesture would be fruitful if whole community endorses it.Some are how there are points in Poojari's contention.A social revolutions needs support of the society/community but unfortunately even some educated also opposes it.

Thanks for your enlightenment, has u said no temples discriminates widows!
But whether widows are allowed to participate in marriage rituals or any other rituals. Mr.Poojary is trying to eradicate the superstitious beleive thats all.

I feel Mr. Poojari's statement has is totally contradicting ideas within. In the begining he says that women who lost husbands shouldn't be discriminated. Isn't giving someone special attention a form of discrimination?
by giving special provisions to widows you are casting a tag of 'widow' on them!
If anyone is really intended to dilute the apathy of widows without political gimmick, assist in getting them eligible grooms and arrange for a marriage. Definitely they need companions whether they are young or old.
Allocating special previledges in temples doesn't improve anything. But let me enlighten Mr. Poojary In Mangalore no temple discriminates widows!

i am not a poojary fan but as per many hindu traditions widows cannot be part of many rituals like during wedding you dont see them on the stage ( during the ceremony) so on that contect this is a good step . And ya these days majority hindus only follow the right things and dont beleive in false rituals which were never part of the Sanathana Dharma as per Vedas and upanishads

Being a HINDU, i am proud that over the years we are judging ourselves what is bad & what is good as world evolved..we are moving with the world, leaving behind so many rituals even it was mentioned our Holy books..Now a days it has become a daily routine to quote books, get excuse even to kill..But, along with Holy books God has given us a brain to think, let us use it wisely for peaceful living..

I have great respect for Janardhan Poojary, always rising to the occasion and a silent worker. I don't care if it is politicization or the timing of his statement or for any electoral benefits. Caste, Discrimination are the major evils and Mr. Poojary has the will-power to undo all those outdated practices.
