Panel falls off Bangalore-bound Air India Dreamliner mid-air

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI):
A large panel on the belly of a Bangalore-bound Dreamliner of Air India fell off mid-air, putting about 150 passengers on board at a grave risk, but the aircraft landed safely.

The DGCA is probing the incident which occurred on Saturday when an 8X4 feet panel in the fuselage fell off while the plane was on its way to Bangalore from Delhi, leaving a gaping hole in the cargo hold, official sources said.

There were 148 persons, including the crew, on board flight AI-803 which landed safely at the Bangalore airport, the sources said, adding that the hole was noticed by the ground staff when they came to inspect the aircraft for its return journey.

A spare panel was flown to Bangalore and fitted on the Boeing 787, which was later declared fit to fly. But the return flight was delayed by over nine hours, they said.

Confirming the incident, airline officials said a panel had fallen off but was replaced and the aircraft was cleared for flights.

"Yes, there was a gaping hole. During the normal transit inspection, it was observed. Engineers immediately rectified it," an AI official said requesting anonymity.

"It was not an emergency. There was no safety problem," he added.

Besides long-haul international operations, Air India operates the Dreamliners on domestic routes like from Delhi to Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata.

The incident came in the wake of a series of problems faced by the new aircraft, starting with the battery fire incident that grounded all Dreamliners across the world for four months. In July again, a fire broke out in an empty aircraft that was parked at Heathrow.

The incident came in the wake of a series of problems faced by the new aircraft, starting with the battery fire incident that grounded all Dreamliners across the world for four months. In July again, a fire broke out in an empty aircraft that was parked at Heathrow. It was not clear if the panel fell off due to a problem in design or manufacture, or a problem with Air India’s servicing of the aircraft.

This is the result of reservations in SC/ST jobs to get the vote bank. Where merit is replaced by prejudice this is bound to happen. Today every government sector is ailing because the best brains are working in the private sector whereas the public sector is only making lossess because of corruption, red tapism, lack of morals, greed and inefficiency of employees. The attitude of Air India employees is poor compared with that of employees of other airlines. Air India should be given to the Tata or Reliance Group and only then work culture will be respected.

Dreamliner is not built by Indians!
It had teething problems since its initiation itself, with batteries on fire etc.
Only Qualified & well trained by the manufacturers attend the maintenance of aircraft.
Anybody who got that piece is now rich by a few dollars.

How can they just fix the panel and fly? They must determine why the panel fell. What if another panel falls and we are not this lucky?

Air India Should be privatized at earliest to avoid further losses and damages. The entire maintenance system has collapsed, evidently other day AI served sandwich with worm it is because the cabin cooling temperature has not been maintained due to this food will become stale and the hygiene is compromised. It is strongly suggested the Air Liner should be handed over back to TaTas as they are best in the Management in the Country and abroad. Save Air India - Jai Ho.

dont just blame for AI.. AI has flown many commuters from far to far destinations. Focus on the problem. This reminds me of macdonnel dougles company which lost its name 2 decades before and now in Boeing name. related to the cargo door openings were reported in the 1990's and fatal crashes lead to loss for company. Now its a turn for Boeing to answer the brand new dream liner 787...lets wait and watch in future about the new generation aircraft.

People not only on the flight but few people on the ground were also at risk. What if the large panel fell on someone's head from that height?. Are they sure the panel did not damage anyone on the ground?

It's scary. Is it a maintenance lapse or a structural problem with the Dreamliner? Not only the passengers were put to grave risk of death or serious injury, but the panel could have fallen in a populated area and killed or injured people.

This could be bad maintenance by AI staff. The panels probably were not put back properly secured. This AI is world's 3rd worst airline, yesterday there was Worms in sandwich(boneless meat) & today Midair fell off.
