Mangalore: Debris, unhygienic surroundings make Mahaveer Circle a poor sight

Mangalore: Debris, unhygienic surroundings make Mahaveer Circle a poor sight

Mangalore, Oct 21: Mahaveer Circle is one of the most prominent circles in the city. Though it was named Mahaveer Circle a few years ago, it is still recognized and called Pumpwell Circle by most. This is the prime circle that connects the city with two major national highways, NH 66 Panvel to Kochi and NH 48 Mangalore to Bangalore.

The reconstructed circle has a huge ‘Kalasha’ in the centre, surrounded by green landscaping and is maintained by the Karnataka Bank. Till date, the circle has been maintained well, but the nuisance is in the way it is used on occasions.

Quite a few associations tie flags, buntings, and banners on the Circle and the fail to clean it up properly. Remains of banners, buntings, and flags tend to remain there along with threads and ropes. Some even paste bills around the Circle, which damage it to a certain extent.

Another problem is that there is an MCC dustbin near the Circle, which again gives it an unhygienic feel. Two lorries that belong to the MCC for transporting waste are found parked near the circle most of the time.

At times lorries ferrying fish tend to park in the surroundings at night and let their waste water gather there. This leaves behind foul smell for some days. This has been occurring over the past few days. This, in turn, affects the people who pass by this Circle daily and also poses risk of deadly diseases to the residents of the area.

Earlier, there were a few fast food shops near the Circle which were later cleared off by the MCC. But while there were shops there, there was no problem with relation to hygiene. It is extremely essential to take prominent steps to see that the present problems are solved in order to maintain the true heritage of this place, so it may be called the ‘Gateway of Mangalore’.

Worst management by Mangalore City Corporation. No proper hygienic toilets. Main City roads are stinking and very shabby. Ugly fish market and useless private bus stand and the list goes on..... Where are the Congi Leaders such as Ramanath Rai, JR Lobo, Ivan D'souza etc Instead of Congress Bhavan let them beautify Mangalore. Mahaveer Circle badly need of face lift with surroundings beautification. It is sad that Mangalore look like a uncivilized CITY.City Corporation wake up and 'CLEAN UP THE TOWN'. What a image we have created for TOURISTS ?.

Everywhere its with pot holes, Authorities need to be concern on these & make Mangalore a neat & super city. All the best.

Let us be optimistic and let us hope that the situation will improve shortly by reading this article which is an eyeopener of the concerned authority. I wonder why such issues are not come to the attention of our District Administration, Corporation authorities etc. They pass on that route many a times but fail to observe those things. Why they expect that such issues be brought to their notice by the public.

Bad roads means good business for Hospitals, Vehicle repair shops, etc. The real loses are we who travel on these roads crying and jumping in agony with pain and emptying our pockets for maintenance of our vehicles, or visits to Hospitals.

Vincy, Bangkok the flag peice which you are seeing in the circle is either of JDS or congress. Please check properly and then blame BD or RSS or VHP. Also note that people have elected the reprentatives to work towards development and not to attend any inauguration or sanmana programe.

Flags, danglers are posted by all parties in this circle so need not point at one party. the broke structure is of Traffic Signal, & dust bin is of MCC. So blame MCC for their negligence...

We had pinned a lot of hopes on Mr. Lobo after he was elected as the MLA. It was expected that he would bring about a sea change in Mangalore. However, the way things are moving, I wonder whether he would be able to do anything. He keeps saying that before his term ends, we would be able to see the real change. But even after five months, the so called change looks elusive. The first few months were spent by him attending functions and felicitations held locally and now he has moved overseas to accept felicitations. He would do well to remember that he has been elected to serve the people and it is incumbent on him to first look after the needs of those who elected him. Enough of the functions Mr. Lobo. Let us see some development work now. Please live up to the expectations of the people. In this matter, he can take a leave out of Mr. Khader's books who seems to be doing a commendable job.

I have commented before i voted for congress this time in the recent assembly elections, but when BJP MCC was ruling and when there was BJP state govt in the state they were atleast doing some development works and the condition of Mangalore roads was not that bad that time which has to be really appreciated. Our people blindly support congress for whatever they do, but in the mean time we to also appreciate when someone does good job also.

I am actually wondering what is happening to Mangalore. The most important roads in Mangalore are in pathetic condition. The junction near Nanthoor Circle towards Bikarnakatta is like a Roller Coaster! The road leading from Mahaveer Circle to Thokkottu is the WORST (it has always been in bad condition though). The roads from Mahaveer Circle to Kankanady (both the roads) are in horrible condition. Recently I read an article in Daiji about how a youth club REPAIRED one of these roads. Due to this REPAIR, my car bumper got damaged twice due to the unscientific patch work carried out which has resulted in protruding sharp edges. Doesn’t the City administration feel ashamed when the public does THEIR job?
None of the concrete roads have been finished with pavements.
Every day we see a new “No Parking” sign in the City. I am waiting for the day when an alternate “Parking” sign will be installed!!
New buildings which have absolutely no parking facility are still being inaugurated by the citizens’ representatives themselves.
There is a railway station in Mangalore called “Mangalore Junction”. You cannot go the station from the City without your vehicle being damaged due to the deplorable roads and poor illumination.
Is the job of the citizens’ representatives limited to cutting ribbons and inaugurating all sorts of business ventures?

I must congratulate the author of this article. He has brought true state of the affairs at Mahaveer Circle. The Bank which was supposed maintain this circle has perhaps forgotten what it was supposed to do. The Mahaveer name is misnomer for its the surroundings are filled with filth and garbage. I do not understand why there there is big fanfare in naming and inaugurating the circle but not an inkling towards its maintenance.

Thank you Mr. Brijesh Garodi and Daijiworld.com for focusing on this disgusting problem of Mahavir Circle Mangalore.
The state of the circle’s surrounding is so pathetic it has become a real nuisance to people living in these surroundings. The stench rising from the pools of putrefying water is so unbearable it is difficult to breathe for any person walking through this rotten area. This problem has been bothering people at least for the last two years. Hygienic condition has gone to dogs. Authorities send surveyors to find out about the diseases prevailing. But with such a big nuisance right in front of everyone no authority has turned an eye to this problem which explains how blind is MCC. This seems to be the height of negligence. Concerned authorities should take immediate action.

There is no point in blaming any ruling Govt. or any political party for the conditions of the our cities, village roads and the drainage systems. It is the responibilty of the citizen to maintain public places and be responsible in maintaining cleanileness. People have blind eyes and they do not mind travel on pothole roads, never mind stinking open drainages flowing next to them, they never mind sleep next to open drainages, they never mind spit and urinate in Bus stands and to the mater shit also!. Which political party you will blame ? No wonder India was ruled by so many foreigners in the past, because we being people of this country are not having right attitude, that is why Britishers called indian’s as "Murkaru" and "Murkara Inida" ! This still continues even after British leaving this country way back in 1947 !

There is a department in the government called RTE or Roundabout Traffic Engineering who design the traffic islands and their surrounding landscaping. Do we have such a department. If not, study about it from abroad and design all the traffic islands as per RTE and strictly implement the design and the landscape.
We construct roundabouts, flyovers, bridges and new roads but with high corruption by the department and 'chaltha hai' attitude by the public and RTI group so by international standard they are very shabby and eye soars.
When will we overcome this Banana-Republic like public sector projects and the governance.
    Jai Hind!

If we recollect our memory, honorable MLA Lobo Mamu, said he will change the present scenario and image of Mangalore to International Standard. It’s already five months now, no one even bother about clean Mangalore streets at least. He might be busy somewhere searching for some old records to pin down someone. Hope that Mangalore Municipality woke up after reading this news. We have observed lot of changes in Mangalore and Udupi Cities during BJP Governance, but I fear that it will fade once again like it had images during Congiss Government earlier. Afterall from where they will bring money for these works, since entire revenue being utilized for free bees or pleasing particular community only

A very good eye opening article by Daiji which is the need of the hour to keep our city clean and green. Mahaveer circle is well maintained by Karnataka Bank. I once again repeat it is the responsibility of the public to cooperate with MCC and see that the heritage is maintained. If each and every individual realizes this the goal can be achieved. Some volunteers may come forward to maintain the other nearby small circle/police booth.
