Mangalore, Oct 23: In a tragic incident reported in the city on Wednesday October 23, a woman from Mulky passed away a week after delivering a baby in Lady Goschen hospital. The baby died only a day after its birth.

The deceased has been identified as Prema Amin (35), wife of Madhava, from Aikala near Mulky.

It is said that Prema and Madhava had come to the city about a week ago to make their Aadhar card. Prema who was pregnant then went to Lady Goschen hospital for a checkup. As per family sources, she was 8 months pregnant.

The doctors who checked her in the hospital told her that she had high blood pressure and other complications and asked her to get admitted immediately. She delivered three days later, but the premature baby died.

Prema's brother-in-law Vasanth Poojary said that Prema was given some injection after which she lost consciousness. He also alleged that doctors did not come to her help when she was in labour.

"The family wanted to shift Prema to a private hospital so that we could save her at least, but the hospital did not allow. They let us go to Wenlock hospital, and so we shifted there. But there too she was not given proper treatment and she died," he said.

He also said that Prema used to go to Karnad government hospital usually for checkup, but as she had come to Mangalore for Aadhar card, she decided to get a checkup here.

Speaking to daiiworld, district medical officer Rajeshwari Devi said that the Prema was admitted to Wenlock hospital on October 15. "Prema died due to uncontrolled diabetes during delivery, urinary tract infection, acute septesemia and acute renal failure. As soon she was brought to Wenlock, she was given antibiotics and dialysis was done in the ICU and her condition was being monitored, but she failed to respond to the treatment," she said.

The family is now demanding a separate post-mortem to be done in a private hospital. They have also approached Bunder police to lodge a complaint.

I strongly say that there existed some kind of malpractice while administering the required drug to the patient with or without proper consent.Sometime this action maybe a negligence or some time intentionally to help the patient to overcome her problems. But all in all to say it is a utter medical failure,a medication or a profession or a doctor.'May her soul rest in peace'

Shankar, I do not know your position and professional qualification. But I am in agreement with Benet Navitha Moras.

In fact I have lost faith with doctors as well as nurses in Mangalroe. Unless u know the subject, one will be take for a ride.

Being educated and had international exposure, I myself would have been a victim 6 yrs back. I had visited one of the famous hospital for general check up and the doctor with MD qualification was forcing me to go for a hangio test without conducting the basic test. Might be he was targeting a big commission by recommeding to the hospital in Mangalore. I called my friend doctor and he advised me to go for ECG and blood pressure with unknown doctor without telling what happened in the hospital. My ECG & blood pressure was normal. Now tell us, who is right here, doctors, nurses or you.
On that moment, if I had trusted doctor blindly, by this time I would have been a patient giving money to doctors every visit OR might be gone for ever. Thank God, due to my strong character of not agreeing with doctor blindly and trusting myself, I am saved.

Negligence do happen in govt.as well as pvt hospital. What is sad is, there is no proper procedure and application of mind, during the time of crisis. Lack of training, lack of facility, allocated funds not utilized fully, all these add to the agony of common man.

Hearatfelt condolences to the bereaved members of the family. May her soul rest in peace.

    Dear Mrs.Benet Navitha Mores,
Its a pity that educated NRIs like you generalise things and vomit your ideas in social forums without even bothering to rethink how wrong your ideas are.
your comments depicts the whole medical attendants community as irresponsible. Have you observed how these people are dedicated to their job barring a few here and there? No one can doubt the care what nurses give to the patients. Its not that they are just performing their job for which they are paid for. A patients recovery also depends on the strengthening words from nurses, their warm care and pleasent smile(however stressed they are in their personal lives).
Chatting with boy friends??? are the nurses only the female community chatting with boyfriends? If you are a working woman, haven't you ever chatted with boyfriend/husband during your work time?
You could very well express an apology in the same forum for hurting a group of individuals who dedicate their time for comforting other human being if your conscience permits.

Dear friends please be careful when you admit in the hospital
Whichever hospital it will be government or the private. Patient and the family members should know
What medicine doctor is written in the prescription and how to take them. Please don’t depend
On the Nurses, I had a bad experience in Mangalore hospital. My son was admitted in the hospital
And he had appendix surgery and due to strong medicine he got high urinary infection so he was admitted again to the
Same hospital where he had operated, and doctor told me to start the antibiotics to my son. and
He had strictly told me to give the medicine on time. Since the half minded nurses are working in that department
And the first day one nurse came and gave the antibiotic at 10am and after 2 hours one more nurse came with same
Antibiotics before she could inject my son I asked her what is this? She replied antibiotics I told her as per my knowledge
Doctor had written only one antibiotic and that is already given. She was shocked and I gave her right n left.
So friends be careful …..now a day’s u can’t trust on nurses and leave the patient in the hospital.
I have noticed many things in the hospital nurses are busy in mobile chatting, their boyfriends will come to visit them
Then they forget the patients their relatives will come stand for gossip. This will happen in any hospital
So we have to take care of our self shouldn’t depend on any nurses,
Just take care in the hospitals….
    jan dene wala bagwan hai,
    jan lene wala kon hai?
    rakshak bakshak ban saktha hai.
Jan koi bhi le saktha hai.

    Benet Navitha Moras, Mangalore, kuwaitThursday,

I do not think that you are perfect, there may be negligence for not charting the medicine by some of the staff which may lead to error, but you see there are so many people all over the world who are dedicated to health care. The health care people work day and also night shifts, they are human being, sometimes they work tirelessly in case of emergency and in intensive care unit, it does not mean health care people have to suffer through out their life for the patients. They are human and they have a life to live. They sacrifice but that does not mean they have to sacrifice everything, they have their dependents.

Health care people have to respect the patient, the patient families, take all the responsibility, they have to be sensible and critical in their thinking. Every word that the healthcare worker speaks is counted and every action of the healthcare worker is considered as the patient and the patient family is eager and curious to know the results. This job is not so easy as you think. They have to use their brain to work, use their muscle to shift, move, and turn the patient, they have to take utmost care for an injured and fractured patient, they have to monitor every second or minute in the ICU for any changes that take place during medication and ventilator. Families are eager to know the status of the patient who are in coma, serious, and critical condition. Every individual wants to stay healthy and normal. But there are circumstances which cannot be explained and treated. Every medicine has side effects and interactions, nothing is perfect. When people get sick, ill, and meet accidents whom will you blame, we cannot but find a solution for cure. In India healthcare workers specially nurses are paid pea nuts for their Job and their responsibility. Learn to respect and take respect, it is not a magic or a miracle.

Sometimes we blame things and People without knowing anything about the Person or case.Of course it is very tragic the Baby and the mother too are deceased .The relatives told something and rest are blaming Hospital People. But in such cases where pregnent Lady had high blood pressure, and rest complications fellow automatically.sometimes nobody can help.Even health Minister can help hardly when the Lady came late stage to the Hospital.it is very dangerous stage when Lady falls in coma.heartfelt sympathy to the Family.

Educated like me go to the government hospital there is no problems at all, I get everything because I speak in English and English only. If every educated atleast visit once for annual check up can keep a check on this hospital, and just tell them that you are going to contact the media. Your work is done.

It is a new strategy of congress government. See the religion of patient and give treatment accordingly. Afterwards no enquiry, nothing. Best way for ethnic cleansing. What Khader can do? He has to only follow "10 Janpath"

    This is most dangerous...!!

I intentionally commented like this just to give a thought to those who consider Modi as "Killer" without any proof. How much he must have wept internally by now by hearing all harsh words from so many "intellectuals"?

The patient had high blood pressure and other life threatening symptoms. The patient did not take care earlier about her health, The patient has to take responsibility of her health. The doctor's do their best to take care, but if the situation is critical then doctor does not have a magic wand to cure the patient. We cannot blame the doctor's or health minister for such critical situation. We cannot blame always the ministers because we are the people who elect them as our representatives. We see that in India only 3 percent of the approximately 1.2 billion population pay taxes and rest of the 97 percent depend on that tax money.

How can anybody expect changes in government work. Blame the people who hide the money as black money and who do not pay taxes. There will be no much development and proper equipment in our Hospitals. From where will the government invest for research and pay salaries if the people do not pay taxes. People include ministers and government officers too do not pay taxes.

Time for Health Minister Khader to resign on moral grounds (as a token of responsibility) & to keep his clean image undented.

Free oil does not come out in our Indian soil like Saudi Arabia. You are living in a golden cage without any freedom. In Saudi Arabia all the Doctors and Nurses are mostly from India like you as an expatriate, what would it be your fate if you had Saudi Arabian Doctors and Nurses taking care of you in Saudi Arabian hospitals.
