Mangalore: Fire destroys elderly couple's house at Kulur

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Nov 11: A house located at Kulur was gutted in fire late night on Saturday November 9, causing a loss of around Rs 3-4 lac. Luckily, the residents escaped.

The house belonged to Rukmayya Poojary, an elderly man.

At around 11.30 on Saturday night, the neighbours noticed heavy smoke emanating from the back end of the house. They immediately alerted Rukmayya and his wife and helped them escape from the fire. The neighbours also got together and tried to douse the fire.

Among Rukmayya's children, the eldest son Praveen was out working on night shift, while his two other children were in their own houses elsewhere.

Rs 5,000 in cash which Rukmayya had kept in a cupboard, along with clothes and other items like utensils, mixer grinder, fan, cupboard, television were destroyed in the fire. The couple were left only with the bits of clothes they were wearing at the time of the tragedy.

MLA Mohiuddin Bava visited the family and assured maximum help from the government. Local corporator Dayanand Shetty, Keshava Sunil and others were present.

It is said that the fire spread quickly and the wooden beams got burnt in a matter of minutes. The electricity wires too were affected. Rukmayya and his wife have been reduced to poverty because of the fire, and have nothing left with them except the clothes they were wearing. The locals have urged the government to provide them relief and rebuild their house at the earliest.

Until a helping aid comes from the govt. I think locals should help this elderly couple without any expectations. We may also get into such circumstances and if we help these at least god shall bestow his blessings on us. Pls do advise how to send some money which would reach to this elderly couple.
