Another haul at Mangalore Airport: Gold found in passenger's footwear!

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Nov 14: The alert officials at the Mangalore Airport have made it tough for smugglers to sneak in gold. So far, attempts to smuggle gold into the city by concealing it in the hem of quilt covers, clothes rack, diapers and oat containers even have been foiled by the customs, immigration and DRI officials at the airport. Nevertheless, the smugglers are getting innovative, but not enough to escape the sharp eyes of authority and technology.

On Wednesday November 13, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the customs officials in a joint operation apprehended a passenger for trying to sneak in gold worth Rs 3,84,744.

The accused has been identified as Manir Hasan, a resident of Bhatkal. He arrived from Dubai by Air India Express flight.

A gold biscuit weighing 116.64 gram and a gold coin weighing eight grams were found concealed in the strap of the sandal on his right foot. A slit had been made in the inside of the strap, such that it was not visible at first glance.

It is said that the officials acted on prior information, but no gold was found on Hasan during checking. Hasan even argued with the officials and alleged them of harassing him, sources said. However, on a hunch, the officials took his sandals and passed them through the x-ray scanner and the concealed gold was detected.

Hasan was taken into custody and futher investigations are on.

Most people who are commenting here doesn't fly out of India. Else they would have known the harassment of Indian Customs. Indian Customs wont leave even foreigners who bring their personal items on their trip to India. Can any one think the 1960 customs rules are appropriate even now with same same allowances?? Any one can import GOLD worth not more than Rs. 10000/- for free. Rest attracts the tax. The gold you get for 10K in 1960s and in 2013 incomparable. Why not these greedy asses change the rules according to the time and inflation. The people who come from GULF after working for years to convert the savings into a small amount of GOLD and bring it in.

These ppl are not the SMUGLERS who does it in LARGE scale. Anyways our Politicians protect such big guys but leaving these labour class to the leeches at the Indian Airports. The media must be questioned too. WHY WOULD THEY GLORIFY THE PETTY CASES CAUGHT AT AIRPORTS and leaving the BIG SMUGGLERS, GREEDY POLITICIANS... PERHAPS THE MEDIA IS ONLY TO PROTECT THE BAD GUYS!!!

I feel since as our pride of mangalore the mangalore international airport has lot of international traffic it has to be made mandatory that all the passengers leaving mangalore and landing here go through a X-ray machine (i mean belongings like shoe, prosthetic legs etc) to deter the smugglers or else mangalore will soon turn out to be a big hub of such activities. But i must applaud and congratulate the custom officer team in mangalore for a commendable and the excellent job they been doing with limited technology. The process of checking and scanning must be carried out across all the class of people and even politicians who use the airport, because we never know who and when might be carrying what. This should not be limited to just gold ,saffron but even to chemical narcotics which is poising the youth in the DK area which used to have the best students in the state/country. Let us all work together to weed this out.JAI HIND, JAI TULUNADU.

Good work from Mangalore customs officials. I am also from Bhatkal. There is few people in the community doing these kind of activities. On behalf of that there are many bhatkallys leaving in gulf facing harrastment from customs.

Most of the smuggling activities are carried out by Dubai bound passengers (to & fro) and most of them are from Kasargod. Now Bhatkal brothers are picking up the trade.

Let them do and be caught. Custom dept. revenue will increase in multi-folds.

Prior information is mostly from disembarking port, for e.g in this case Dubai customs had given the information to Mangalore customs.

It is illegal to avoid CUSTOMS and fail to . Smuggling is generally recognized as an illegal act by every civilized society. Hiding the gold inside the strap of the sandal and failing to is smuggling. It doesn’t matter whether it is Ten grams or five gold biscuits. GREED is the common cause and the road to personal hell. Thumbs Up Customs Official.

yes there is 10% duty in Qatar on import of gold check with jewellers, so the making charges are always high, even on biscuits it is added.

While the officials are right in doing what they did, they had "prior information" means someone from the passenger's close circle informed the officials that he was carrying gold. Hmm....I think that passenger will do his own investigation to find out how he got caught....:D

The Banks in India should facilitate the trading in Gold. There should be a mechanism to pay the rate applicable in Dubai in the local banks in India. There should be fixed charges depend on the value of the import. There should be a facility to pay customs duty in installments. Very Soon India & Indians can be Gold Rich.

Please remember that these guys are litterally small guys (I mean economic and education basis) try to get their hard earned money in the form of GOLD. Indian Govt allowed several tons of GOLD through the dealers in a somewhat scandalous way. why not these people are arrested instead of these small guys!!!!

How much is the limit to carry without tax and how much is with tax. If the authorities are transparent on this issue all will be benefited. Also this information should be available along with embarkment form.

    @ Veera,
Gold import duties should be lowered. Even with lower duties, the government is bound to earn more if all the gold enters India legally. Then there will not be any need of smugglers and their devious methods of importing gold. The only problem may be that if the smugglers go out of business, some politicians may lose their kickback.
