Mangalore: Heavy vehicles posing danger to lives of school children

Mangalore: Heavy vehicles posing danger to lives of school children

Prashanth Nayak

Mangalore, Nov 13: Heavy goods vehicles plying on some of the roads where schools are located have been posing danger to lives of little children in the city.

One example is the increasing traffic on the road behind police commissioner’s office near St Anne's and Carmel schools that has been a cause of worry and fear for students and their parents.

Though such heavy vehicles ply on Rosario school – Telegraph office – Corporation Bank road when traffic policemen are assigned, they change their route and ply on Carmel School road immediately when the traffic policemen go away.

Along with hundreds of vehicles including two wheelers, auto rickshaws and other private vehicles plying on this road on a daily basis, the children and their parents have to struggle in between the heavy goods vehicles also to cross the road every day, thus putting their lives at risk.

Besides that, there are many other large goods vehicles stopping in between the road to unload right in the middle of the congested traffic.

It is high time the authorities take notice of the situation and take measures to stop heavy vehicles from plying on roads where schools are located, before any tragedy takes place.

    Mr. Joe D' Souza....wake up.....

If Traffic Police Departments are working honestly & sincerely, then why the following are happening ? I have never seen any Traffic Police trying to control the following… ( If you need I have many Photographs as proof)

1.Driving with high beam headlight during night within the city & under a street light on Highway without changing to dim when vehicle arrives from the opposite direction.
2.Driving vehicles in the night without brake light or any reflectors on rear side, driving heavy vehicles with single head light.
3.Driving from opposite directions on dual road as short cut & creating disturbance to drivers who follow rules & right track.
4.Overtaking on the left hand side & causing accidents.
    5.Overtaking on single track bridges
6.Heavy vehicles are continuously driving on fast tracks (inner tracks) without giving way to vehicles followed by them and insisting the following vehicle to overtake from the left side.
7.Heavy trucks carrying goods which are loaded outside the body of the vehicle which causes obstruction to other vehicle & may cause accidents
8.Using un-recognized font on Number plates, you cannot even read properly, how you can note during hit & run case.
9.Vehicle number plates are not readable, covered with mud or dust.
10.Tippers or Heavy vehicles carrying sand, soil etc without covering it with Tarpaulin which s on the nearby vehicle or causing problem for two wheeler
11.3 or more persons riding on single Motorcycle & also motorcyclists not using helmets.
12.Two wheeler drives continuously on fast tracts
13.Parking the vehicle in No Parking areas.
14.Taking U-turns where it is not allowed.
    15.Not following traffic signal lights.
16.Overloading passengers in Buses, Taxi & Auto rickshaw
17.Most of the Passenger buses having 50% & above tinted glasses.
18.No Emergency exits on long distance Valvo & other A.C. Busses.
19.No meter used by Auto drivers.

I have discussed the same with RTO officials & DC but no action taken.

MANGALORE IN PARTICULAR RTO / TRAFFIC POLICE ARE GOOD FOR NOTHING SIMPLY WATCHING THE RULE BREAKERS IN ALMOST ALL PLACES BE IT BUSES OR TRUCKS ESPECIALLY IN CITIES & HIGHWAYS BECAUSE THEY ARE PAID MAMUL FOR THAT MATTER AND NO INDIVIDUAL DARE TO TAKE ON THEM IS THE MAIN REASON FOR INCREASING CASUALITIES.

It is common to see city/service buses being driven recklessly & racing each other near educational institutions and other busy areas in Mangalore. This is very dangerous not only for school children but for other pedestrians & smaller vehicles as well.

Hello to everyone who wrote comments regarding vehicle problems in the City and Suburbs. Many times I have requested all of you through this media to contact Police Control room and Traffic East and West Division. They will take care of your problem at least 90% of the time if not hundred percent. But request RTO and you will get a response only 25 percent of the time.
In my opinion, these little children face more risk riding with adults on motor bikes. These little angels sit behind holding the shirt of bike rider. Many a times they may fall asleep due to cold wind and fall to death. Stop carrying Children on a bike.
For every traffic problem I have called Traffic East and PCR. I truthfully tell all of you that my request never failed. 99 percent handled amicably and with good result. So please call Traffic Police and make roads safer. Also please do not accuse the police as they are not highly paid nor compensated like other Govt. Officials. They do their Best.

Surface transport sector is suffering from several severe problems.
Multiplying and mushrooming tiny vehicles on roads are the prime reasons for increasing traffics, road blocks and accidents. Instead of helping the situation they simply worsen by resulting in fuel hikes, pollutions and costs. Rapidly growing volume of commuters and goods, need to be provided with adequate and safe public transport facilities.

As a solution, the implementation of a new concept in vehicles move will help the reduction a huge volume of fuel consumption and in the meantime, a considerable volume of energy can be generated. Also we can see a revolutionary change in the automobiles sector, by eliminating the pollutions, reducing costs and multiplying the capacities of vehicles.

EVERY BODY WANT TO COMMENT ON THE ISSUE. BUT WE THE PUBLIC HAVE TO TAKE UP THE MATTER WITH CONCERNED AUTHORITIES AND LOCAL MLA,MP'S TO CLEAR THE ISSUE.
WE CAN SEE THE OVER BRIDGE AT THUMBE MANGALORE-BANGALORE HIGHWAY, WHICH IS NOT AT ALL USED A SINGLE PEDESTRIAN BUT THE BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURE WAS MADE. WHY? THE SAME KIND OF STRUCTURES ARE NOT BUILT SCHOOL ZONE. THE POLICE COMMISSIONER AND RTO'S ARE DAILY ROUTING THIS ROADS AND ARE THEY NOT AWARE OF THIS. THAT MEANS WE HAVE TO GATHER AND TAKE UP THE MATTER THROUGH THE RIGHT CHANNEL THEN ONLY OUR CHILDREN'S ARE SAFE. SO WE NEED A LEADER FOR THIS AND I PERSONALLY REQUEST DAIJIWORLD TO TAKE SUPPORT FROM ALL CONCERNED SCHOOL PTA MEMBERS AND PUT FORWARD TO DC MANGALORE.

The Mangalore traffic police are woefully understaffed. People who drive 5 lkh cars don't have sense worth 5 rs. The latest trend is the blue neon light which blinds the onward drivers.illegal U turn and parking is so easy. Anyone can stop anywhere without any care for the vehicles behind them. its no use blaming bus drivers and auto rickshaw drivers if we ourselves behave worse.

It is high time that serious action is taken on this issue by our Deputy Commissioner with co-ordination of the Police, to stop these errant Drivers of heavy vehicles, before an innocent life is sacrificed. A wake up call to our MLA's and Politicians to solve this problem immediately.

Seize the vehicle and keep it for a week. Let the goods on the truck spoil and loss occur to the owner. Let the owners face this loss and make good of it from the truck driver, thats when the drivers will stop entering the prohibited zones.
