Mangalore: Cordel parish win Wilfy memorial singing contest

Mangalore, Nov 18: The evening was a true tribute to the legend of Konkani music. The grand finale of Wilfy Rebimbus Memorial Inter-parish singing competition held at Jeppu Church grounds here on Sunday November 17 not only took the audience through a memorable journey of Wilfy's songs, but also gave a glimpse of the immense talent in store in the Konkani music world.
At least 20 back-to-back songs, all composed by Wilfy Rebimbus were presented by the 34 finalists to win the most coveted title. After a tough battle that lasted three hours, Cordel parish won the champion's trophy.
The programme started with a prayer song by Wilfy's son and daughter Vishwas Rebimbus and Veena Pais. They sang Wilfy Rebimbus' composition ‘Mai bhaishek jayo’, with music was provided by Joswin Pinto, Bendur.
Earlier, Fr Nelson Dalmeida, parish priest of Jeppu Church, Fr Joseph Martis, rector of Jeppu Seminary, Fr Onil D’douza, director of St Joseph Workshop, poet Melvyn Rodrigues, Henry D’Souza, Angelore, Meena Rebimbus, Vishwas Rebimbus, Charleen Rebimbus and Roger Rebimbus, Jacintha Alfred, corporator, Sr Sylvia Fernandes, superior, Infant Mary Convent, Pamela Santos, vice-president, and Laveena D’Dias, secretary paid a floral tribute to the legendary singer the late Wilfy Rebimbus.
Fr Joseph Martis in his address said that Wilfy gladdened the hearts of people with hs rich words, music, voice and lyrics, which were beautiful and very deep in meaning. "His songs brought contentment and solace to those who heard them, because of which a person from Jeppu came to be known worldwide. He introduced Konkani music to the rest of the world," he said.
The competition was organized with three purposes - to pay tribute to Wilfy, to provide a platform to budding singers and relive Wilfy's songs, and as a fundraiser for the less fortunate.
The competition started with the 10-15 years category and went on to the above-16 years category.
Jeppu parishioners too entertained the audience with several songs and dance performances at different stages of the competition.
Songs performed were 'Chali' by Laveena D’Dias and dance by young girls of Jeppu, 'Tana dim dim dim tantana' by Prerena Fronteiro, and dance by small children of Jeppu. 'Mujo Desh Maka Mugacho' a patriotic song composed by Vishwas Rebimbus was performed by the young dynamic youth of Jeppu, ‘Bahrain Ghrachi Mai’ was enacted by the Jeppu parishioners, directed by Alwyn Miranda.
Meena Rebimbus sang a song from her composition ‘Ku Ku Karoun Gai Kogulle’, a tribute to her husband Wilfy Remimbus, with whom she spent 40 years of married life. And when she sang the lines 'Thuzo rangeen thalo ayikonk.. Kogile.. Hanu davonu yetha', the Konkan Mynah turned back to look at her husband's photo imprinted on the backdrop, apparently suggesting her everlasting love. The music was provided by Joswin Pinto, Bendur. On behalf of the jury members, Fr Denis gave his feedback. Ivan Sequeira performed the song ‘Veera Veera Veera'.
Laveena D'Dias, secretary thanked all the people who helped make this event a grand success. Choreography for the songs was done by Shaila Saldanha, Maria Deepa Penha and Teena Immatty. Cyril Gregory Sequeria (C G S) Taccode, the compere for the evening kept the audience engaged and entertained in his inimitable style. Fr Nelson D'Almeida welcomed the gathering. Pamela Santos, vice-president introduced the judges Fr Denis D’sa, Joel Pereira and Ivan Sequeira.
The funds raised from the event will be utilized to meet the medical and educational needs of the less fortunate parishioners.
The entire programme was conducted systematically. The charm and impact that Wilfy Remimbus created through his songs and music was proved by the presence of Fr Wallter Albuquerque who came in a wheelchair.
