First in country: KSRTC brakes to be controlled by server

Srirangapatna (Mandya), Nov 18 (DHNS): For the first time in the country, Mysore will pilot the project of the ‘Intelligent Transport Enterprise Innovation and Planning Scheduling’, which will monitor the movement of KSRTC buses, send emergency messages, as well as control the brakes through Vehicle Mounted Unit (VMU), if the driver is driving haphazardly.

This innovation is taking the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) a step further to avoid untoward incidents and mishaps. The brake control of the bus has always been with the driver. But henceforth, it will be manned by the Control Room. Also, the buses installed with GPS will be monitored through central server at the control room.

The driver will be issued warnings if found driving improperly. A push SMS will alert the authorities, including depots, line checking squads and Managing Director. If the driver is speeding without heeding to the warnings, the engine will also be immobilised. He will made answerable to the depot management, where he will have to give an explanation as to why the bus was stopped. The driver will be cautioned, and only then the engine will be restarted by the control room.

The driver will also be pulled up if he does not stop at the scheduled places like bus stands. The system will be installed in the city buses as a pilot project, which will be later extended to other districts and States.

Executive Director of Association of State Road Transport Undertaking (ASRTU) P S Anand Rao at a workshop on the technology, said that the technology was available in the country with Bosch and Ashok Leyland companies. “The manufacturing unit monitors loading of the engines and their capacity. However, this is the first time in India that it will be installed in public road transport system,” he said.

Rao said that the Intelligent Transport Enterprise Planning system will plan, schedule, route and model the transport system to ensure safety, security and speed control. Cameras will also be installed in the buses to check untoward incidents within the bus.

Also, following the Delhi gang rape incident, a provision has been put in place where alerts from within the bus will be sent to the control room and police. The alert will be sent, if the screaming level is beyond a limit. CCTV cameras too will be installed to check crimes.

Rao also said that interaction with the control room while sending SOS messages would also be made available in the buses, in cases of emergencies. During fire accidents or any other mishaps, the driver, can make use of the VMU by pushing the red button (signal) which will instantly reach the control room. Traffic jams also can be avoided by using the same button with which the driver can re-route the bus as well as other vehicles, caught in traffic. He said ‘Auto Scheduling’, which has been implemented in three buses in Urban limits of Mysore Division will be extended when the pilot project is introduced.

CEO of Lumiplan India, a subsidiary of Lumiplam France, David Moszkowicz, which is implementing the system in India, said  that the pilot project is funded by the French government, while the company was implementing it with the infrastructure provided by the ASRTU. He said that the existing system was in need of comparison, proper scheduling and calculating, to ensure a better transport system.

"...following the Delhi gang rape incident....alert will be sent, if the screaming level is beyond a limit." This means, we just cannot book these buses for marriages or picnics!!! (If we do...even by mistake...we would be surrounded by police...who will think a mass rape is going on!!!)

Let us give this project a chance. It is worth the try when you compare it with the various scams being investigated in our State, the latest being Canara bank scam running into Rs.1200 crores
Let the authorities sincerely implement these servers based controls and even if one deadly accident is averted daily, it is worth the effort put by our technical experts. There is always room for improvement. Most of the comments below are negative. I hope the test runs / trials will prove their merit.
It is a joy to reach our destinations alive, even though a few hours late, than trying to reach early and in the bargain loose our precious lives on the road.

Another brainless project that will fill the pockets of the corrupts of Karnataka.

Can anyone please help us know if any of the KSRTC projects have yielded the desired results that benefit the public??

I have personally heard the genuine complaints of the KSRTC long distance drivers about the harassment they receive in the hands of their higher ups who demand a bribe even to grant a sick leave.

I have even seen KSRTC Volvo bus drivers sleeping inside the suffocating buses (without A/c on) and the windows closed on a hot summer day at Cochin bus terminal which smells with urine 24 hrs a day!!

I have even advised such drivers to look for a decent job in the private sector based on their excellent work experience and integrity.

Before venturing into launching a man on the Moon or server controlled buses,

The Road Transport Authority should first focus on improving the situation of existing roads for which Karnataka is world famous.

The only Vehicle suitable for Karnataka roads are Bullock Carts.

I fully agree with you. Does anybody recollect having heard about the 'moral re-armament' movement started by Ram Mohan Gandhi back somewhere in the late sixties or early seventies. Then he was too early for the times, but now that movement is definitely essential to stem the rot which our country is facing. And that is exactly what your comment speaks about.

"Exactly" Driver has someone to blame now and the IT guys can say our Servers are down or we are upgrading or doing routine maintenance reasons now will be endless, also how to identify the mistake?! and which IPC will be applicable when there is an accident! Negligence of the driver/programmer/manufacturer/ supplier/ Integrator/, so we have endless possibilities since it will be almost impossible to prove the guilty party, so may be the insurance premium of KSRTC will go down! instead they could just ask Volvo to provide their buses with simple speed governors and tracking system!

This kind of fancy stuff will not work in real time. This will bite the dust in no time. Instead of this, pl invest in real working electronic speed governors rather than just pasting a sticker saying "This bus is fitted with speed governor". Set the speed at 80 which is more than enough for a bus.

The surface transport sector (knowingly or unknowingly) has been carrying and moving the bullock cart on wheels, since the introduction of vehicle engines.

Instead of that if we follow the bullock cart concept only, by making the bull (engine) to pull the cart (commuters and goods) on wheels, we can solve our several severe problems and can have a cheap, safe, adequate and comfortable surface transport facilities.

Complicated solutions for undisciplined workforce of KSRTC. Taking refuge in technology to find ways to waste tax payer's money without accountability is the norm of the day in India. This is nothing but the usual trick to amass illegal wealth for a few enjoying authoritarian powers! The root cause of all that chaos that we are experiencing today is due to fact that we failed in grooming good citizens with values. Our schools, society, institutions and probably poor parenting have played a major role in the mess we are in today. Time to think why we have so more lawbreakers than law abiders? Find ways to put good drivers on our roads.

The surface transport sector is ripe for a rapid revolution, to make a world of difference.
While looking at the progress of mobile technology, the auto-mobile is far behind, being on a lengthy evolution and with a primitive concept.

A simple conceptual change can REDUCE MORE THAN 75% of fuel consumption, 90% of air pollution and sound pollution, 60% of the manufacturing cost, 80% of running and maintenance cost and MULTIPLY the capacity to at least five times.
The huge dead weight of commuters and goods on wheels is to generate certain volume of energy by using it (the weight) as a pushing force.

Concept change: Pull and move (instead carry and move) and the weight as a pushing force (instead carrying and moving like infants)

I have traveled so much and have so many 'romantic experiences' that I may bring out a book someday. The sad thing in most cases is that the 'Romance' concluded with the journey.
