Bangalore: ATM attack victim recovering, hunt intensified for attacker

Bangalore, Nov 20 (PTI): The woman, brutally attacked by an armed man at an unguarded ATM kiosk here, is recovering at a hospital today after being paralysed on her right side, even as the police intensified their hunt for the assailant whose gory act caught on cctv footage evoked widespread revulsion.

The 44-year-old bank official who was attacked with a machete was recovering from a "long surgery" and she was able to speak, Dr N K Venkataramana, who performed the operation at the BGS Global Hospital, told reporters here.

He said her skull was fractured and a small piece of bone had gone into the brain, causing a "penetrating injury" and added that she had been paralysed on her right side.

"We have taken all precautions and are closely monitoring her condition. Hope everything will go well... she is able to speak", the doctor said. There was no danger to her life now, he said.

Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar, who visited the victim, said she was recovering and speaking.

He said police officials were being sent to different districts and states to track down the assailant, "who cannot be a first timer".

Auradkar said police had two rounds of meetings with banks on the issue of security at ATM booths earlier and given strict guidelines to them.

In a gruesome attack at the ATM kiosk near a police station in the heart of the city, the woman was repeatedly hit with the machete by the assailant, leaving her in a pool of blood for nearly three hours before the incident came to light when two school children saw blood stains and informed a policeman who shifted her to hospital.

The assailant had attacked her after entering the ATM booth closely following her and downing the rolling shutter when she refused to draw money and hand it over to him, police said.

After the attack, caught on CCTV, he had walked out of the kiosk downing the shutter and taking away her mobile, leaving the bleeding woman in a serious condition.

This barbaric act looks like that of a psychopath, needs to be booked immediately!!

Just posting run-of-the-mill unarmed security guards from routine agencies will be no big deterrent for hardened criminals with lethal weapons!!

Just a simple solution,Hang the attacker in public, because there is a concrete proof of his wrong doing, and even if he survives he will be a real treat in the future. Hanging him in public will create a fear among the people to do such acts.

@RSRB Kundapura - Gentleman, think what you are commenting first. Why do you blame the (any) government? Do you think the CM & his cabinet should come and guard the ATMs in the state? This is purely the responsibility of the concerned banks to provide with gurards/securities to the ATMs. So, just for the sake of commenting don't comment rubbish. You are working in Saudi Arabia, hope you are not a child ..  think wisely & comment.

Good that the camera has captured all the action...else the Bangalore city police would have found reasons to avoid tracing the culprit.
    Dog squads will not work.
In fact this camera capture can zero in on the attacker.Feel sorry for the victim .
    So no place is safe....

Please have a thorough and fair investigation. Agreed this crime has happened inside an ATM kiosk. Pls dont overlook the fact the crime could have been done on someones orders. Check the relation between her and her spouse. Check the benefeciaries on her death. Its not that every goon walks with a machette...in his bag. Obviously there is more to it than what meets the eye

As the police officer told, it is very difficult to appoint a gunman to each and every A T M. only one mechine should be there. There should be a mechanical lock from inside,so that the one enters inside can lock from inside. After his/her transaction and comes out, then only another can enter in side.there should be an emergency alarm/sairon button available easyly.shuttors should be locked after opening.I think to a certain extent this will solve the problem. But professional criminals and robbers will find their own way to do their job by taking the risk of their own life !

ATM is opened for 24*365 days then why required shutter?.The door have an automatic lock facility when the customer entered inside atm. If there is Shutter should not reach hands easily to shut without the pulling lever.

Many of the ATM doors do not close or get locked from inside when the ATM user gets in. Even if they get locked, then any person can open from outside by ing the ATM card in the door slot. So there is no safety.
Some of the ATM cubicles of SBI have two ATM machines, which means two persons can get inside at a time. So there is no safety when two persons are inside. I had met the Manager of State Bank of India in one of the branches suggesting not to have two ATM machines with single door but two separate doors with a partition, for two ATM's. He was least bothered to listen to the suggestion. Jai Hind.

I got insulted, just because the Karnataka Government is busy in Shaadi Bhagya, OBC tour, Killing harmless religious culture, etc. etc. & not taking care of human safety & security.

Once upon a time Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri resigned as a railway minister owning responsibility of an accident. See today's shameless congress & their supporters, try to prove security is fantastic.

You asked me what government can do for this? Please see the next article in daijiworld. What government is supposed to do, is being done by Home Minister after the incident. "Ooru kolle hoda mele kote baagilu hakidhanthe"

Divert all those money being spent for cheap publicity to security of the people. Punish those who are guilty. Create an enviornment where miscreants should feel fear for theit deed & citizens feel a environment of safety and security. If government does not do it, who else have to do it?
Can you tell me at least, what is the job of government? Spending tax money on Shaadi Bhagya, OBC tour, etc...??

Dinesh, as usual your attack without knowing the ground reality. For the mistake & the lethargic attitude of Banks ATM management of not providing security guards, this ATM customer has to pay a very big price.

I do strongly condemn the attack. As per Karnataka HM, out of 1600 ATM machines in Bangalore, only 900 ATM machines have security guards. Why there is no security guard in the first place for that ATM machine. As per HM interview, he had already instructed once he had taken over as this HM position, instructing all ATM machines to place security guards. Whose mistake it it? Isn't is Banks mistake? And who is paying the price now.
Diniesh, without knowing the ground reality, do not throw smug. At least the Karnataka HM has visited the hospital where the victim is hospitalized and met their family members.

It is not the of Law and Order.

It is a question of Bank wanted to save some Pennies, most of the jobs vacant in in India due these greedy top management who are least bothered of others life.Unfortunately the victim happened to be employee of the same bank of another branch.Hope now Bank will think before pocketing some petty income unnecessarily.

Moreover HM cannot force banks have security mandatory, it is a Reserve (Central) Banks prerogative.

Hope this lady recovers faster. All our prayers with her. RBI should guide to install all banks an alarm or security button in all ATMs just like all bank branches have alarms and security system. An ATM effectively constitutes to be a bank and need safety regulations.
That alarm might be connected to the nearest police station and might create a loud sound to alert people nearby. It would ensure safety to both the public and public money.
