Mangalore, Nov 21: The Dakshina Kannada auto drivers' association along with various other associations on Thursday November 21 staged a protest in front of deputy commissioner’s office against the newly launched auto rickshaw display system.

Prior to the protest, a rally was taken from Police lane, behind RTO office to deputy commissioner’s office.

The protestors alleged that some enemies of the auto drivers' community had been creating problems to them in their work and now, a new rule of compulsory display of identity card in every auto rickshaw has been introduced, further increasing their troubles.

Expressing fear of misuse of this rule by some elements, they said, "It is dangerous for an auto driver to mention his name, address, phone number and other details in the display card. The same enemies are plotting against our association leaders and are creating problem for all the pro-people associations.

"Pressure is put on police officials to book fake cases for petty matters against sincere leaders of our association, and at the same time, they are supporting this display card system so that getting our details becomes easier for them," they said.

Auto drivers' association convener Subhash Kavoor, other association leaders Sudatta Jain, Hemanath Konchady, Ramachandra, Ramesh Kotian, Ashok Shetty among others were part of the protest.

The display card system was launched by IGP (western range) Pratap Reddy in Udupi on November 1. The project was implemented throughout Udupi district on a pilot basis with immediate effect and is to be extended to Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Chikmagalur soon.

As per the new rule, every auto and taxi driver should enrol himself in the 'travel safety register' in the police station in his area. The sub-inspector in every station will scrutinize the registration form and provide a display card with a unique identity number. This card will include all the details about the driver and help the passenger to identify him. If the passenger finds that the driver and the display card do not match, a complaint can be sent on the spot (mentioned in the display card), and immediate action will be taken.

IT IS NOT THE FEAR FOR SAFTY BUT SOME OF THEM MAY THINK THEY CANNOT LOOT THE CUSTOMERS ESPECIALLY WELL DRESSED LADIES WHO ARE NEW TO THE PLACE IF THE SYSTEM IS INTRODUCED STRICTLY BECAUSE WE CAN NOTE DOWN THE NO.OF THE DRIVER AND SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON ANY DRIVER IS ENOUGH TO PROVE HIS FAULT OR NATURE.
SOME OF THE DRIVERS WHO ARE NOT OWNERS BUT RUN AUTO IN SUCH CASES MERE VEHICLE NO. WILL NOT SERVE ANY PURPOSE.

No compromise on this rule, please.
These rickshaw drivers are becoming arrogant day by day with their demands. It is high time to bring an end to their demands and arrogance.

There shouldn't be any problem to any auto driver, provided he is straight and decent while dealing with passengers.

In Bangalore city, all autos display the so called little info about the driver behind his seat and facing to the passenger. What is the big deal.

These guys have evil intentions, hence they are protesting.

The authorities should, by hook or crook, implement the new regulations in Mangalore and Udupi in the interest of the larger passenger community.

They must display their identity cards and contact numbers and license number too. Auto driver's job is the job of serving public. If they are so fond of privacy, they should not be doing that job. It only speaks volume of their appalling attitude towards the public.
    1. They do not approve of having meters and charging according to the meter.
    2. They randomly charge for the service and sometimes if you are badly in need literally fleece.
    3. Now the latest, want their identity hidden.
I strongly wonder if they are thinking that their job is licensed, uniformed, and legal job of extortion?

Dear Manish Sir - Mangalore. May be am enjoying posh life in Dubai or not that should not be your concern. Please note that Auto drivers are doing business. Like every business governed by set of rules, they too obliged to follow the rules set by concerned authorities.Opposing the rules set by the authorities is a crime.

This should not be considered or accepted. Those who do not want to display their identity, may simply leave this profession and do something else. Let us learn to follow the rules and rule of law. Then only we can become a developed Nation..

Mangalore auto drivers literally kill commuters with their fares and behavior. They charge bomb every time they are hired. We can't argue, they immediately abuse and assault passengers. The police helpline number is just trash and complaints go unheard. Let us wait and watch if the auto drivers really do follow the order.

Wilfred and Allan. Sitting in dubai living a posh life doesn't mean u can comment left and right .

For issues related to passengers they can always lodge a complaint with police with the registration number if the driver demands more or any other issues.

The privacy issues related to drivers for demanding more . Petty fights with drunken people . Late night fares people will get easy access to the address and can threaten a auto guy . Who has to earn his bread working late nights.

Its easy to comment . But never think u are ped with a responsibility whenever u have board an auto to the destination u ask .
Read the article and think twice before u comment .

Today they refuse to display card system fearing safety. Tomorrow They may refuse to put Vehicle Regd. Number plate. The new rule is in larger public interest. Whoever refuses to obey this new rule, they are enemies of General Public.

I think instead of the Address and Phone number, along with Photo of the driver, the card should display the Name, Registration Number of the vehicle and the badge number. In case of a crime, the police will be able to nab the driver with these details.
I think it would be unnecessary putting an honest driver in trouble if you display his address and phone number.

If someone drives with stolen badge than if the crime happens then the real driver will tell that my badge was stolen. Whether the passenger has to ask the driver for identification whether he is the same as mentioned on the badge?

You have agitate for the following:
    1. No uniform for Rickshaw drivers.
    2. No Meter
    3. No police checking.
    4. No identification required.
    5. Petrol/Diesel in subsidized rate.
    6. No passenger will argue for rates. Whatever rate you say they have to pay
