Mumbai killer arrested in Delhi for duping people

New Delhi, Nov 21 (IANS): A man, wanted in a murder case in Mumbai, was arrested here for cheating several people on the pretext of providing them government jobs, police said Thursday.

Hitesh Gandhi, 44, who along with three of his friends, had crushed to death a youth under the wheels of a vehicle in Mumbai and came to Delhi to escape the police, was arrested from west Delhi's Pitampura area Wednesday night.

"Gandhi was using fake documents and ID cards of parliament of India for cheating people. Stickers of the Rajya Sabha and the government of Gujarat were also pasted on his car when he was arrested," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), Ravindra Yadav.

During interrogation, Gandhi claimed to have worked as a public relations officer (PRO) in the film industry in Mumbai from 1993 to 2001 and then as PRO of the Nationalist Congress Party from 2001 to 2003.

He said he came to Delhi in 2003 and worked with former Lok Sabha speaker P.A. Sangma and later became general secretary of the All India Trinamool youth wing and worked at 13, Mahadev Road in New Delhi.

"He worked as party convener of Rashtriya Janata Dal from 2004 to 2007. From 2007 to 2009, he was employed in the film industry. During this period, he cheated many people by offering them government jobs," said the officer.

Yadav said, "In April 2009, Gandhi ran a vehicle over one Rohit Singh, whom he had cheated to the tune of Rs.3 lakh on the pretext of providing job in the Indian Railways, in Mumbai."

The Mumbai Police arrested his accomplices Harish Bhandari, Ramesh Kerur and Jyoti Venkatesh but Gandhi went underground, shifted his base to Delhi and changed his name to G.H. Navneet.

"He has cheated many people in Delhi with false assurance of providing government jobs by using the forged documents procured by him using fraudulent means, which have been recovered at his instance," said Yadav.
